As someone who devoured all the pre-release SC2 info and DOES remember watching and playing Scrap station, current Stormgate seems pretty comparable to SC2 back then. I think people don't remeber or realize just how rough around the edges SC2 was before/on release. That's even ignoring unit balance, don't get me started on that.

With Thors twice the size and build by an SCV directly on the map. There were some concepts that would have really resulted in hilerious strats. Immagine a Dropship full of SCVs dropping behind your base and building these Monsters, that would have been a Doomdrop😂

Majority of people are having problem with art direction. And devs said that is not going to change. In sc2 style was nailed from the get go

As an OG SC2 fanboy who was standing outside the GameStop doors at midnight I absolutely remember scrap station and how night and day different WoL & HoTs current patch currently is. Medvac dropping seige tanks was the shit lmao! I wish our community was larger and I have high hopes that this will reignite and grow the RTS genre as a whole!

@@slicemup9 I'm not going to stare at something for hours on end if I don't like the look of. This is a game, it is meant to be enjoyable. Art style is absolutely something that can put ppl off games. And it's a valid reason not to play something.

I like that the Tower Rush is not a "Instant Win" option. It was deffendable and the main purpose was to contain, not to immediately destroy the base. The reason why (Spoiler) ... ... Kiwian won was not because of the rush itself, but rather that he could Eco in the background. It was still a back and forth.

I think the reason so many people are being so critical is because this game does nothing to set itself apart from Blizzard RTS games. It's a Craft-like clone game that takes no risks in technology, gameplay, aesthetics, controls, interface, or generally anything whatsoever. I backed it on KS and am going to give it a chance, but I have been entirely underwhelmed with the complete lack of innovation thus far.

I think the names of the resources are to long. Maybe we can add last names to make it shorter. For examples Luminite Ore (and we just say Ore) and Therium Shards (and we just say shards)

@@ElJulyPK It may be heresy but I dont watch viewer submitted games as much as I used to. At a certain point it got..... insufferable. It's like going clubbing or staying up all night gaming, at a certain point without warning you can't stand it anymore and need to space your dosage.

If the game is successful and becomes the next best RTS that's actually in active development with balancing, content, etc you can bet he'll be taking part in it. There's no reason he can't have content from lore than one game. You can take your pessimism and leave.

i dont think the hellzone gives a bonus like creep, does it? i would like for it to be like the blight in wc3 (or like the creep in sc1), so only to build on it and not to spread.

@@DioBrando-qi9so nope, you gain the white bar on top of your normal health bar, e.g. extra HP and the race can actually build anywhere And you collect some kind of resource when killing enemies within it granting powers for later. So it is very important to know where it is and isn't

​​@@DioBrando-qi9sothere was a slight buff on blight. Edit: Now that I think about it, it was all units. The problem is that every race had a higher HP regen status, and it was low enough to only add a couple of hits.

Cmon man, they only had $35M to work with plus another $2M from kickstarter. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we found out a portion of the seed money was embezzled. At a minimum the leadership doesn't understand how to invest in art design.

I get that the game is still in development but for me so far the unit models (other than the dogs and B.O.B) don't look appealing to me. With SC2 imo each individual unit simply looked very cool. Like no unit combo here so far looks as cool as a group of marines and siege tanks, or zealots and stalkers, or have the personality of the zerglings

I think maybe if they could get the infernal race to look more similar to something like the demons from the Act 3 of Diablo 3 where it really felt like it was an army of brutal and horiffic creatures. The infernals here kinda remind me of trash mobs in an elemental/infernal themed dungeon from WoW Edit: kept autocorrecting infernal as internal

The issue with Stormgate is that the artstyle has no personality. You ask an average person on the streets what would unit X look like and the average result would be Stormgate. It feels like they got a non-artist as an art director or something, I don't know. They need to watch more things, play more games, read more books, have actual personal tastes and interests, a few hobbies, have a life, touch some grass, and then maybe they can finally make some unit designs. It feels whoever made the units had none of these things in their lives.

It's too late for the massive overhaul required for this game to be a success. They would need completely new unit design, new art style, far better animations, a better back story, better unit names...the list goes on and on.

@@SilverDew_ I don't see that happening, quite honestly. What you see now is basically what you are gonna get, just with more details. Surely the barracks will look differnetly, but the general direction is not gonna change. Just take a look at their first trailer in which a demon fights a mech and the mech feels like it does absolutely no damage with its guns and stuff, a lot of the units feel similar, except for the rocket cars, wtf.

Since virtually no one watching this video knows much about the game, it would be super helpful to have some of the overlay tools for casting. Supply, resources, productions, units, resources lost, etc. So far I'm not really feeling Stormgate as a viewer, but once it's released and I get to play it a bit I may become a fan.

The games artstyle needs a lot of work, like it needs to be much darker, and creatures need some major changes to their appearences, they are... so hard to tell apart at times, especially infernal, and especially on the shroud, cause the shroud needs major changes it looks awful. Not a fan of GIJoe faction, and Silly Demons.

Stormgate is superb! It looks like Warcraft 3, Starcraft and Halo Wars all at the same time. I will buy the game on Steam and will watch all the Stormgate videos you and Winter publish (alongside the Starcraft videos obviously). P.S. All my respect Lowko for staying strong against sponsors, more power to honest content creators!

Not a fan of art style NGL, I liked the dirty, worn aesthetic to SC2 terran units. Even protoss' clean aesthetic is always overlaid with the fact that so much of their tech is lost to them (their tech structure is unpowered). Zerg are well, zerg. It all felt dirty, which in a way that brought you closer to the action. Without that, combat feels impersonal and I feel less invested as a whole. Also the acronym spam for the terran faction turns me off to it as it feels tacky

I think that Stormgate doesn't have enough massive or big units. Like the Vulcan is supposed to be a huge mech with a massive minigun but is barely taller than the Vanguard Infantry. I think that the Devs should make some of the mid tier units like the Vulcan and Kodo a bit bigger and when they reveal the tier 3 units, they should be as big as the Thor, Ultralisk, or Carrier from SC2. I also think units in the Vanguard Faction should have unit specific veterancy because a B.O.B. with 35% weapon damage isn't very useful while a B.O.B. with 35% build speed is much more useful.

I dont know if anyone else feel like this, but the buildings do not look align with what they do, the factory does not look anywhere near a factory, it looks like dwarf forge, the barracks looks like a warehouse or sc2 barracks with a big tarp on it.

It is true this is the first video i have ever seen of a vanguard winning, the brutes and fiends are just so over tuned. Vanguard cannot win straight up it has to be from a cheese like this game where you keep them busy hurt them slowly and then pounce

Which is better for campaign or DLC: An inferno demon was inspired by Vanguard technology, so he created a magical flamethrower that never runs out of fuel. Wielded by a golem mixed with flesh and metal known as the "desolator". It is a "super-hero" unit, simply a non-playable "boss" and massive biological version of the smaller Vulcan. The Desolator has 2 health pools. The mech and pilot himself with a revolver in hand when getting out of the destroyed golem. It does 1 damage, but does 100 attacks/shots of fireballs a second, plus splash/AoE damage. It burns through defense/armor as each attack does stacking +1 damage, up to 15-20. The goblin pilot has less hit points than an imp; however, he got a passive skill to dodge attacks with a 99% chance and immunity to ability or aoe damage. The Desolator has 0 armor/defense, but 75-100k health depending on its level and mission difficulty. or The "Old Guard" is a steampunk version of the Vanguard. They are Dwarves with a French, not Irish or Scottish accent. Also preferring wine over beer. Having no high tech or space fleets yet managing to use gems to enhance their steam powered capabilities to open gateways or portals for otherworldly travels. Dwarven snipers deal with infantry, factories produce steam tanks such as "Juggernauts" firing 20-inch shells and Clockwork Ballista for anti-air. Instead of a Scout, their dog resembles a rottweiler called a "Bruiser". Being bigger and biting harder. The Old Guard all started when a Dwarf from a fantasy world was stranded on Earth during WWII. Upon returning to his planet, he shared his discoveries with his fellow dwarven blacksmiths. They all started building the first factories that planet has ever seen.

One thing I like about the concept of shroud is unlike Creep in SC2, this is almost like the homeworld of the Infernals merging with the current world. When you warp in buildings as Infernals is like your transporting an existing structure to this world, and it's slowly converting this world to theirs. And of course the Infernals will have advantages as they turn this world into their own, or weaknesses when they aren't fighting on their own turf.

Just happy to see a new Starcraft like game after seeing the SC2 not receiving updates in years. I'm not a competitive player though just a casual who likes Co-Op and campaign. I've been playing the beta and it's very nice to feel like I'm seeing the start of something new. Supported the Kickstarter and will be happy to continue to support them.

2:30 Yeah, unit legibility could definitely be improved. The team colors are what stand out the most to me, brutes in particular are hard at a glance to see the team color of.

I get what you're saying about ALPHAs and BETAs and how they don't represent the final game. However, a AAA studio puts out a BETA, then the end result could be a lot different. An independent studio, though? Those change a whole lot less often. I mean, heck... a lot of independent games run their ENTIRE course (lifespan) during EARLY ACCESS or BETA. I remain unconvinced that drastic changes will occur.

Agreed; the discharge/recharge weapon system reminds me of the Swarm Host. It's almost like a swarm host riding bitch seat on a hellion.

I dislike the map creatures being some farmable catch up mechanic. Also the units are hard to differentiate. i was excited for this game but the more i see the more apprehensive i become about it. I'd also like to see a 4th playable faction to enable more types of game play. If you want to beat SC2 you have to lead and not follow.

I would call Frostgiant an A studio. Smaller and less significant to gaming as a whole than AAA and AA, and less well-known, but still somewhat notable.

okay maybe production tabs are a bit much, but people not wanting supply counts? like take that first game where the one guy rushes and both do damage to each other. who is in the lead after that? if we could see how many workers each had and their army supply, it wouldve been much more enjoyable to watch.

I am overall really excited about the game. The only part that concerns me, is that they are building it up way too much. For now the selling points are: 1. The current state of the game is looking like a good starting point 2. Many of the devs have a history of success 3. The game is sold as a "social RTS" with a lot of focus on multiplayer and coop, which is rather ambitious 4. They delivered this first to influencers, who could bump the image 5. They created a kickstarter when the hype was almost at it's cap making huge $$ without having the game yet When I look at the above, it looks like I am describing a scam, which is what worries me. I know the game is free, but it's pretty much freemium, with part of the game locked behind paywalls (I love campaigns, so this is very relevant to me). The price also looks quite steep. I mean, we already have meta and the game is in alpha... let's hope this evolves in a good direction, which I think it will, I am hopeful!

So far, nothing about the game looks like a scam, to be quite honest. There might be a number of wrong decisions about art style and unit design in general, but i don't see anything pointing towards a scam or cashgrab, game development is expensive and takes quite some time.

@@asdfasdf-mn8iu I agree that nothing screams scam, but the kickstarter, for example, is a detriment to the development. It increases the scope and makes the management harder, basically increasing the risks, which does not seem like is in the best interest of having a high quality game. Again, no clear sign of a scam, just concerns. I do believe in the project a lot, I just believed more before these things came up.

i would love to see an implementation of a specific camera tour, if the main base is clicked and a special button, for example F3 starts the little camera tour and will display player stats. Name rank, avatar, etc Would also be nice if the player had a bit control over the art style what's sown and how. Not what is shown, just the look. Could be hellish or technical and so on. The bottom UI still feels pushed in your face. Would be nice if we could scale it ourself and set a transparency level. It also feels a bit blurry. The colors, the sharpness. Cant put my finger on it...

They need to find a way to separate replay files into game and observer overlay. Then when a game is being showcased on a video like yours or others. The overlay can be viewed by the caster on a side monitor and then in editing they can insert key information as needed. Just like many streamers do with whatever OBS type program they use for their personal overlays.

I am very interested in playing this game but at the moment the legibility could be improved. I think a lot the units need to be bigger. So many of them are really small. The camera angle might help too. It is very up and down.

At 27:00 if those lancers started moving down I think it was a bit unlosable. They would've spotted the shrine and probably had time to destroy it before the counter attack. I think those towers have a wee-bit to much range on them. Though to be fair he could've mass expanded off that push and in the end his lancers were enough to wipe. Also, from a glance and not knowing the price, Brutes seem like a very cost effective unit. A tanky bulky unit that if micro'd can be split into multiple high dps units.

I feel like a production tab is necessary helpful for learning builds and i assume is helpful for casters giving insight into the game.

You have the best of both worlds you get to play games early and if you do a sponsorship they're allowed to buy your time but that doesn't mean that they buy your approval which is something I greatly like that a lot of people don't I don't know it feels like some people are disingenuous

I heard the term double A or AA studios be used before for a studio bigger than indie, but not quite AAA. Larian Studios (Baldur's Gate) i would consider AA since they have about 450 employees.

I'm slightly warming to Stormgate's overall layout and gameplay I must admit! 🤓 My constructive crticism for Stormgate is... I find the way BOB's flash light when charged for combat just a bit TOO distracting, I think it would be ideal if they just had a solid-light electrical glow, like an 'Archon' when they're activated for combat. Either way, thanks Lowko!!

What's up with the recommended specs on the Steam page ?? They ask that you have an RTX 3070. It still costs 500 €+. I hope they optimize their game way more than that. Also, I would like to see the soldiers on foot shooting way more bullets to get those nervous games like in Starcraft 2 with a mass Terran bioball.

I think that people are being over-critical of this game. I think we should remember how SC2 is fundamentally similar to SC1 yet because it's smoother and has a different playing style it feels completely different. I know that there's two resources, 3 races, there's "creep" and the controls feel similar but it's still a different game. I mean, can we at least appreciate that they are combining two games instead of being like the new AOE. Simply being a remake every two years?

It has a feel that sits just between Warcraft III and Starcraft II. It's sitting just less than the beta release of SC2, and at the level of the Warcraft III demo.

I do not think we will see a Battlecruiser equivalent in Stormgate as they have said in the past they do not want hard hitting units in the air because they can ignore terrain which they want to keep as a big part of the game design, so we will probably see more support and utility untits in the air and DPS Units on the Ground which I am really looking forward to

I'm a bit more interested in Zero Space but I will for sure spectate Stormgate and give the PvE a look. Also very interested in the third Stormgate faction, that will be a big factor for me.

To give some feedback for the devs I'm just going to rapidfire some things I noticed: For the infernals right now they seem to be a very melee centric faction, perhaps some additional ranged units could help there? I also noticed a lack of any aerial units on both sides here. Are they not available yet or just very weak right now? The Vanguard defensive structure seemed to be able to outrange the shroudstone in the second game, and the shroudstone looked very weak in general in general. I'm not going to harp on about legibility cause I'm sure the devs allready know about that critique. Overall this game has promise as a wc3 type of game but it needs a lot of time in the oven still.

i feel like the hotkey manenagement will be so much easier then in SC2 which for me was the barrier to play SC2. im really excited for Stormgate

Looks like Warcraft 3 remade in Unity with SC2 pathfinding and C&C Generals maps. Not exactly my art style, but if good ideas make it into the game well implemented, it'll become a gg. That being said, I don't even play RTS even remotely competitively, if at all. :>

Idk. Probably an unpopular opinion but the game feels boring. 10 minutes in and each "army" has like 15 dudes. for all three games each army only really used like 3 units for most of the game. The resources are just gold mines from WC3 and... different gold mines. The units attacks seem very similar. Melee go bop bop. Maries go pew pew. When you look at WC3 each units attacks felt very different from each other race and from each other. Like the humans in this felt super underpowered except for when they cheese towers which actually feel good to use and unique. Its like they had a project due and just grabbed random stuff from other RTS. We'll take zerglings, but they die slowly on their own. Footman, but a bigger sword and no shield. Grunts but they can blow up into zerglings and look like abominations. And Kodos. Everything moves and builds and looks like its from WC3. Its setting looks like its in the woods of Azeroth but its supposed to be futuristic-ish. In summary, it feels slow like WC3. The units are forgettable and it doesn't feel like something pushing the RTS genre forward. It feels like a Hodge podge of other RTS glued together.

I just think the map looks a bit boring. It’s just rocks and pine trees now. In SC2 there is loads more props and setdressing.

Weird critique, but I feel like the camera is too straight down. Like the field of view is really small. Or the UI at the bottom just takes up too much screen space. Maybe it’s different while playing it, but just watching makes me feel like I can’t really see things.

You know what Im worried about? I know that we are kinda early to be thinking about balance, but both Vanguard and Infernals have already gone through a couple of rounds of feedback, and they are being changed to be more "balanced". But the thing is, the Beta is right around the corner, we dont have the Tier 3 units, and dude, we dont even have the 3rd faction!! we didnt had any preview at all, and we are suddenly gonna jump in the beta to try out the game, and the final launch is not that far behind (summer apparently) I feel like this is a little bit rushed out, and will need a few more iterations before we can even start talking about a proper 1v1

Early Access is summer 2024, not Final Launch, to give you some idea; Baldur's Gate 3 was in Early Access for THREE years refining polishing, etc. Now obviously Stormgate is nowhere near as big, but expect early access to last at least a year imo...so maybe mid 2025 full release if we're lucky. Remember too Frost Giant is likely way way ahead of what you're seeing, and what will be seen in Beta.

Currently it looks like a very crude RTS with a lot of potential not yet reached by a "simple" artstyle that isn't very appealing for me, as the units don't look very distinct from one another (perhaps it's the colouring?). Other than that, I don't think this game does anything other RTS's haven't done yet, and they often have done it better. There is still hope! And I would like to try it, but this isn't going to make as big as an impact as I think it could've, should've, would've. Edit: It reminds me of Red Alert 3 with a little of Warcraft and Starcraft I in the mix, but those games have a very distinct art style and unit ability-composition, which this game currently lacks for me. The fact that they decided to show a beta, which is nowhere near their end vision, is their decision, and we can only judge what is shown here, not the potential of what might be (for example those tier 3 units).

It's great to see more Stormgate games, but it still looks a bit green. A lot of important UI elements are missing. I hope they don't take that long fixing those details.

Maybe it feels different when playing it, but the UI seems very large to me. Edit: I suppose if it has UI scaling, that might be a good solution.

Seems like it's about the same size as _SC2's_ UI, though, and perfectly reasonable for smaller displays, like the laptop screens most people game with, these days. Scaling would be nice for those with larger displays, of course, but perhaps _too_ nice in multiplayer, as it would free up screen area. IIRC, Blizzard went to some effort to ensure _SC2's_ UI filled the exact same portion of the screen no matter the resolution, specifically to minimize the advantages afforded by high-end hardware, so it's possible _Stormgate_ will take a similar approach.

i'm hoping for some flying units...right now i like the SC2 with the new races that users have developed better than Stormgate...also it plays slower than SC2 but not sure if that's on purpose to entice players new to RTS

The game looks very generic, its like warcraft3 if it was made today but somehow it looks less interesting I feel the races are generic and the look of the actual units look uninspired and boring It doesn't matter if the gameplay is good or not, if its ugly people will never play it

Gameplay is more important then Graphics. People need to stop focusing on Graphics too much of Stormgate, its still in Development and Graphics Means Nothing if the Gameplay is BAD !

sometime the hp bar is the same size as the unit. a small green line would be enough. watching this makes my eyes so tired. hope they will work on the overlay

It's kinda funny to see that the players play like absolute baboons. Like why does mana keep killing all of his brutes at the same time, sometimes being like 5 sec off the bunkers instead of attacking as brutes and ripping them apart whenever they are low? Graphics style is not good obviously. Infernals seem like they are just the better race, but then there are these ridiculously silly units like the hedgehogs that will be an absolute nightmare to play against. I was afraid for this game when i saw the first teaser trailer and i'm still afraid; but if there will be 3vE and coop stuff, that might be worth it for me, let's see.

They could do with UI being customizable for each player, I mean it's 2020's... Also need to differentiate from doing bad copy of sc2, I mean make infernals more strange, don't rely so much on larger maps (slow movement=large maps), let players decide how to play even maybe giving option like having X resources and such at start for quick-resolution with a host of some tiny maps... Don't need too many to have development go on faster, can always back down. I hope devs don't fall into trap of trying to give everyone everything, it's just bad now since it looks like units die slowly, fights are not decisive... Take into heart the tabletop game development - each player should have fun while game is going on, and find out their "handicap" when game is over or when a decisive fight is taking place. Not by slowly chipping on enemy, but helping in creating grand battles (well those can be slower yes why not), but thing that player keeps engaged in game until the end, not chipped bit by bit.

i know that it is just a beta but in my opinion as somebody who reactes sensitive on it: too many flashy lights like the bobs in their defence mode or their mining in general or the light reflection on the swords or the ring that shows the vision radius and the flame at the tail of the imps.

just based off of what i've seen of only this. The demon units are way slow. They should have some kind of aura bonus for speed around certain structures, kind of like the zerg. Or just reverse it and slow down enemies, either would would work. It just seems very easy to harass the workers of the demons without much risk.

I think it has potential but i find it a bit visually cluttered, it's hard to see who's winning or whats happening. I think the units need to have a more recognizable silhouette.
