In 72 Cash was famous for refusing to wear a batting helmet. He had a regular hat with a plastic insert. The White Sox brought in young (and wild) Goose Gossage to pitch to him. Cash watched a few warmup pitches then went back to the dugout & came back laughing with a batting helmet on.

I'm 70 years old, lifelong detroiter, oh the memories of "stormin Norman". After baseball he became a manufacterer's rep, as so many players did. Thre was plenty of that to go around in Detroit back in those days. In the afternoon he would frequent a bar on the far west side of Detroit, as a lot of reps did, called Duffy's. I had many a great conversation with him, he was just one of the "boys", R.I.P. "stormin Normin

I was 10 years old in 1961 when Norm won the batting title with a .361 average, loved him and that team. He never came close to hitting for average wise like that again. When asked about it, reportedly he said GM Jim Campbell pays me to hit home runs, not for average! Additionally, that year Norm corked his bat...which he admitted in later years. My other vivid memory of Norm was in July of 1973. I was home on leave from the Army being stationed in Germany, and my dad and I attended the game that Nolan Ryan, of the Angels then, threw his no hitter. That was the game that Norm took up a piano chair leg with him to bat because he said that he wasn't going to hit him anyway, lol. The crowd roared with laughter. Norm was a colorful guy with a wicked sense of humor, a real cut up in the clubhouse, and a fan favorite. A tragic loss when he drowned at such a young age. Thanks for the memories, Norm...and RIP.

Norm was among many in those days that wore a cap with an insert. I was a batboy in 1972 for visiting teams in Milwaukee and recall putting those inserts in for many. Norm and Yaz most notably. 73, 74, 75 for the home team Brewers. That generation was tough as nails, played hard and lived large!

I know we're all getting a little older, so it's more important than ever to fact check our comments. David commented the Yankees kept the Tigers from dominating the American League from '59 to '64. The Tigers finished second once during that period. Only once did they finish closer than 10 games out of first (1961, 8GB). Even if you eliminate their seasonal records against NYY, they weren't close. I have fond memories of Cash, Kaline, the criminally underrated Freehan, and Lolich, and was fortunate to see them in Baltimore in the early 70s.

I loved this one! Lived in Detroit area then. Norm Cash lived a couple of miles from us. Our little league coach got Cash, Joe sparma, Jim Northrup and Bill Freehan to come to our practices and taught us their positions. Then in the late 70's we.used to bowl Friday nights once in awhile, Norm and his wife bowled in a mixed doubles league. Twice we bowled next to him, best bowling ever! He was hilarious, cracking jokes the entire night, he treated us like friends, he bought us a picture of beer the one night. His wife was a sweet lady too

My late mother dated Sonny Elliot during the early 1950s. I worked at the now restored Michigan Central Station from 1975-84 and could see the late Tiger Stadium's CF scoreboard and upper-deck bleachers from my 9th floor office windows!! When the Tigers played in the 1968 World Series vs Cards, my 7th grade teacher let his students watch the weekday afternoon games on a color TV that he wheeled into our classroom. If the game hadn't finished at the end of classes, I ran home to watch them on our family's new color TV. The early October afternoon when the Tigers won the Series....the entire city of Detroit went WILD!! I will never experience a celebration quite like it ever again!! The 1984 World Series champion Tigers were my peers...age wise...BUT the 1968 version will ALWAYS be my heroes!! My younger sister dated Kirk Gibson during a couple of years '81-'82. I share my birthday of November 29 with the late Bill Freehan and Dick McAuliffe. My family's summer home on the shores of northern Lake Michigan was not too far from where Norm Cash drowned.

When I finally retired a saw them many times. Now I don't live close enough to walk to Comerica. Sold out for the suburbs. Well, maybe if I go outside of the US again for that year. They might take the series pennant again.

I literally grew up with Norm Cash. Along with Mr Kaline they were my favorite Tiger players. I expected Norm Cash to be at first base for the Tigers, and from the time I was 5 yrs old to the the time I was 19 yrs old he virtually was. He had 377 career HRS, and a respectable . 273 career batting average. He was an avg size guy, but with that quick compact swing he could hit the ball a long way as evidenced by the 5 balls he hit out of the park on to Trumbull Ave. He also was a fine defensive asset. He specialized in chasing down weak pop flies while running with his back to the diamond . A tough play as any first sacker will tell you. Don’t forget his .361 avg and resulting batting title in 61. An anomaly? Maybe so, but it stands there inked in to the record books. This was a great video. It reminded me how great it was to be ( still am) a Tigers fan in the 60’s and early 70’s. Won a World Series in 68, and an Eastern Division title in 72. Most of the other years the Tigers were in the race as they nipped at the heels of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Orioles. Stormin Norman was a key cog in that success. RIP Norm.

Old Sport Magazine did an article on corking bats in the day, and none other than Norm Cash - wearing his Tigers uniform - showed them how he used his drill press in his garage to drill just enough into the bat so it would hold up, how he crammed the cork into the hole, and used sawdust and wood glue and a sander to close the top. It was quite instructive.

Norm is the only player to hit 4 balls over the roof of Tiger stadium. I believe it was done by a number of players with 2.

As someone else mentioned, ole Norm admitted to using a corked bat during his unusually productive .361 season. So let's call him "Corky" Cash.

myth busters did a show on corked bats. conclusion was it only made the bat a little lighter. it didn't help anything else.

Some of my greatest childhood memories are associated with the Tigers. I must be about the same age as the announcer. What a great time. The afternoon World Series games were great. Running off the bus to the babysitters porch. She would have a little TV out there watching the game. Al Kaline was my guy. I lived in Toledo growing up so when they came down here for the exhibition game against the Mud Hens it was awesome. I once got a Bill Freehan home run ball at the exhibition game. I could go on for days. My favorite thing was the father-son game, and doubleheaders. I truly loved Tiger Stadium.

when they played in the 68 series i left school. i said i was sick so i could go home and watch the game. i was the quarterback on the football team and missed the practice to watch the game. i sat on the bench half the game because of it but 56 years later i still say it was worth it. my dad and i would go to sunday doubleheaders usually against the yankees or when ted williams played the red sox.

yeah, especially after the first game when the White Sox did the 'STOMP' on the Dodgers! the 'South Side Chicago STOMP'! the 1959 World Series was the first World Series I ever saw on tv.

Cash only hit .300 once and that won him a batting title. He never came close to .300 ever again. He was a so-so player. I never found him to be that great.

I respect the past players and have always loved the game but...in 1961 Roger Maris hits 61 home runs to bresk the Babe's multi decades record of 60 home runs. Commissioner Frick emblazens the record books with an asterisk because Maris played in more games than Ruth. In 1961 Norm Cash wins the AL batting title at a .361 clip. Norm proudly boasts about his corked bat as he explains it to all American youngsters in "Boy Life" magazine article "How to cork your bat like the bigeague sluggers(??)...proudly teaching all kids how to cheat and be rewarded(??). Fast forward a few decades Albeet Belle is suspended and ridiculed for "Batgate", using a corked bat. Why the double standard?

I'll never forget he won the AL batting title in 1961 with a .361ba. I'll also never forget his 'helpful hints ' article the following off season in Boy's Life magazine, How to cork your bat like the big time sluggers! Teaching our youth how to cheat and showing it off to the world. Look it up. Yeh, what a model for our youth, " cheat and be rewarded."
