Thank you for this. I’ve always had such a big appreciation for Hawaiian culture, and I’m so glad that now I know the story and meaning behind this beautiful song. You also gave the information in such a professional way that’s easy to understand and follow 👍
I appreciate your comments, Dayton. There are more story videos in my related playlist so you can learn more background behind the songs. Enjoy! Aloha from Maui, Mele
Another great presentation --- ( fyi... We were told by the guide at Iolani Palace, when we first visited, that Queen Lili'uokalani wrote Aloha 'Oe whilst imprisoned.... but we did discover that some of the guides there were not quite as knowledgeable as would be desired :) )
I miss the old days im born and raised in waiahole hmstd rd and that was the best place I've ever lived and one of the few places that lived old ways and never changed this new age and crowded island is no good to many outsiders and change comes with outsiders ALOHA 'OE.
Change is constant which is another reason why the Hawaiian cultural practices of telling stories behind the songs whether the song is Hawaiian or not is important to me. Imua we go! Aloha, Mele
I am the sixth generation from Edwin Boyd, and his son James. Yes, the departure did cause the song. The land at Manawili Valley was given to My great x 7 Captain Alexander Napunako Adams for serving King Kamehameha long ago as Harbor Master, military advisor, ship builder, designer of the Ha'e, and sailed to China twice to open the Trade with that nation. He had many workers and developed agriculture for sale in Honolulu town. Queen Liliuokalani did not stay one afternoon, she was a visitor for several weeks at a time at his home. And this was not once but many times. There was a kalohi mo'emo'e during that time, we don't know if it was James, or we were told Adams, but I would think he had died years before because of the timelines. Today, you can still access the Manawili Valiey wooden water troughs (what's left) that the kanaka ka'maina built by hand, some still i good condition.
