The scope of this is really something else. Imagine saving the lives of over 600 children and saying nothing for over half a century. The moment he saw just one of those children as an old woman clearly impacted him. He realized in that moment that he had given her the opportunity to see the result of her entire life, which likely would have ended half a century prior. The reality is suddenly magnified when 5 rows of people who he was responsible for saving stood up, and without saying a single word showed him all he had done. Every single person got to experience a full life because of him. He would have been perfectly content to never have heard from them again. And when he finally realized the magnitude of what he did, words were no longer needed. I'm probably rambling, but I'd love to hear what he was thinking when he turned to see everyone who he saved finally get a chance to thank him. I only wish they would have all brought their children and grandchildren so Winton could see the new generations of children that wouldn't exist if not for his direct actions.

He actually did meet them! When he turned the 100 he attended a group gathering for his birthday...He met all of the children that were still alive and their children. And their grandchildren. If I can recall correctly someone made a comment that he was the spiritual guardian of over 2200 people! You hear about so many atrocities that happened during the war because of the nazis but you don't always hear the wonderful stories of heroism. I absolutely sobbed the 1st time I saw this....the gratefulness of the first lady...so touching...you can tell she was overwhelmed at seeing him again. If you look up the story of how the children were spirited out of their homeland and through France to England the train that they were on was stopped by a group of German soldiers but they let the train pass... Again if I'm recalling correctly no one to this day knows why the soldiers let the train go... If they hadn't none of these people here in the video would be alive today most likely...😥😪😔

1:10 That cut to his face when she said "This is one of the children he saved" is so powerful that you can read his mind and heart. She's telling a story of him saving a life in the midst of the world going insane and committing themselves to the wide-scale ending of life instead... and there isn't even a hint of a smile, nor happiness, nor pride. You can tell he's having a Schindler moment and crying inside for all those he COULDN'T help.
@BobPapadopoulos
@BobPapadopoulos 11 месяцев назад
His reactions to the presenters praise of him, and to finding out the children are there in the studio around him, are also very powerfully telling. He may not say it but he's clearly shocked, and I don't think just from the surprise of them being there. He never shows even the slightest bit of pride at the praise for the entire duration, but when he and Vera find out they're right next to each other she beams at him in a way that says "You gave me my entire life."... and he just grins back as if he's just happy to see an old friend and never gave her more than a candy bar. It's as if, even though he knew all those decades ago he was saving a child's life and obviously knows children grow into adults, he never considered the fact that they'd grow into adults who felt like they owed him anything, much less everything. It just shows you that in his heart he didn't do this for pride or credit, or even because it was the "right" thing to do. He did it because he simply couldn't imagine a real human being doing anything else.

This man is incredible. He worked with a whole team of people to get those kids out and safely away from the Nazis. He even wrote president Franklin D Roosevelt begging him to help. They could have saved 2,000 more children if America agreed to accept children. Winton looked for every opportunity to save those kids. We need more people like him in this world
@margaretr5701
@margaretr5701 7 месяцев назад
Yes, it's sad that the only country that agreed to take the children in, was England, but very glad they did. Many more children could've been saved if more doors had been open to them. In a documentary about Sir Nicholas Winton, his biggest regret was the last train he filled with about 200 or more children, was stopped from leaving. It was assumed that most of them didn't live. One of the most amazing facts about his story is, he didn't go with the intention of saving children, he went to join a friend, to ski and have a holiday. It's a wonderful story of how he evolved from being a carefree, quite well off young man, into being a wonderful, lifesaving humanitarian.

Now this my dear friends is a true hero... a 'REAL' hero. This isn't somebody who has been falsely deemed a hero for merely being good at sports, being a religious leader, or by finding a celebrity status, etc. This is somebody who has saved the lives of many and in turn, through love and kindness, actually made the world a better place. If just one person reads this and chooses to celebrate this person and other people with similar deeds over that of Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, and other celebrities, etc. then a positive change has been made.

I think we could all fantasise such an encounter with legends from our past time. For me it is Sir Nicholas Winton. Actually I watched interviews of some of the children he saved, many of those had no idea how they ended up in England because they’re transported at such a young age and Nicholas Winton himself didn’t talk about it publicly either. So if not the journalist decided to dig into the story behind the scrapbook, neither the benefactor nor the beneficiaries would be aware of each other and this story might never be told
