do you know if they will have updates like in animal crossing new horizons to make changes on the game , like that gazillion machines i have on my farm :(
@@c.a.murphy6464 It looks like they're going the paid DLC route instead, so I don't think they'll do many updates outside of that. Maybe only to fix things that people aren't liking, such as the makers and the emptiness of the dialogues
Its sad they removed the character potraits. I think that is one of their "signatures". It is also appealing when when you have dialogue with characters.
Yeah, even though you get used to it, character portraits feel more appealing. The 3D models can work too but they don't really make good use of it. Little things like a camera-zoom or 1st person view when talking to someone would go a long way!
Signature? Lol they only use character portraits in there handheld games. It is surprising they didn’t use it for this hybrid system since fomt used it. But it’s common for there console games don’t use character portraits.
One thing I like about this game is that the beginning isn't as slow as it has been in previous games. In Trio of Towns, I spent the first couple of in game weeks going to bed by 2pm because there's nothing to do after farm chores and talking to villagers. Things don't pick up until the other towns unlock. In this game, however, there's a lot to do early game. Clearing land, rebuilding facilities, mining for ores, crafting, etc. Also unlike Trio of Towns, most of the shops in this game have similar business hours and remain open during typhoons and blizzards.
I've liked it so far but I really miss the cute portraits when talking to people and also I've felt the day cycles are a bit short. For example, in Rune Factory 4 you have time to manage your farm, visit with all the villagers at various points throughout the day, and go out exploring or fishing in between.
Yeah time goes by really fast, but I feel it's always kinda been like this in SOS. That said - this game does give you more to do in a day, but doesn't increase the available time :p
I preordered the deluxe digital pack. Even with the issues, I still totally love it. I played it all day. I’ve seen ppl talk about issues with no character portraits, frame rate drop, etc but I’ve played for 14 hours now and I haven’t really noticed or cared. I do find the dialogue lacking tho
For me the framerate started to drop once my farm had more stuff on it. I have a field full of crops and sprinklers and I can't cross it without my game stopping for a second or getting really slow and chunky. It's really annoying and takes away a lot of fun from the game because I am always afraid that the game will crash :(
@@janchei9745 yeah now that I’m a week in, I’ve noticed that too. I’ve only had the game crash once luckily but the frame rate really gets bad once you have a lot on your farm
The makers only making 1 product is unfortunate. I assume they were following the stardew valley model with that but I much preferred the way story of seasons did it with the maker buildings and putting multiples in at once.
And stardew valley makers are only for the final goods, not for building materials. In that way, the waiting time in stardew valley is not a big deal, but in this game it hurts the game experience the the “flow”
@@rans0927 Agree. Also a maker is 1 tile out of who knows how many where as SOS takes 4 tiles and just the ability to place is so much more restricted. Even just being able to put mayo maker in a barn would have helped.
@@rans0927 Good point! Have to say that even if the flow of trying to reach a specific goal is slowed/disrupted by this, it did feel like there was always something to do at least. Then again, I did end up restocking the makers daily for building materials that I may need in the future to reduce the waiting time. If you don't do that it probably does feel really bad
I just saw that they’re planning to fix the makers in version 1.5 so we can process more materials at once. Thank goodness. I have too many stacks of 999 iron to get through.
Same haha - currently working until deep in the night to make a video on the 1.0.5. update, should be up tomorrow! Can't wait for that update to arrive :D
@@Swrinny thanks & now me & damon have a child now & child growth will be super new for me & this is will be my first time see Damon cry when our child grow up 😉
Considering my favourite HM game is animal parade I don't care about character portraits at all and to be honest I skip through most dialogue since I'm an absolute cretin.
I wish there would be consequences from wooing everyone... would make things interesting. But I am also that person who tries go for as many love interest as possible lol
Yeah haha! Some special romance events have multiple characters that were my boyfriends/girlfriend at that time show up, which made me feel awkward but the scene just played it dumb.
I'm keeping my eye on this game for when it appears on a sale. About the makers, they were more cute on Trio of Towns✌; also I miss the portraits during dialogues.
Cool and yeah I wish they expanded more on the Trio of Towns makers. They looked like actual facilities and were more useful then what we've got now. Agreed about the portraits - they have a special feel to them that these 3D models don't really capture
I hope they're gonna keep doing updates to fix the stuff you talked about. Kinda like what's being done with animal crossing. They keep listening and fixing stuff even after a year of it being out.
So far it seems like they will! Update 1.0.4 fixed some technical issues and they announced that in Update 1.0.5 they will change & add dialogue to the townpeople, change the makers functionality, adjust cooking times and some other minor changes, all things people have complained about. I already love the game but I can also admit there are some details that could be vastly improved. But I'm staying optimistic and I think we can trust Marvelous on this one :)
I think the story of seasons are really good with the farming aspect and taking care of your animals, while the rune factories have super interesting dialogues with the townfolks and cool events!
I personally don't mind the no portrait feature since it reminds me of Harvest moon ToT and Animal parade but the dialogue is so bland and boring... the characters don't really change what they say even after getting them to high affection
At least 2 of your wishes shall be heard! People have been really vocal about portraits too so here's to hope they'll mention something about these for 1.0.6 or later patches
The makers are the best part! Especially the sounds effects! xD Jokes aside, It's true, what were they thinking? I also hope they do some changes to those things. I also agree that if they are going to remove the characters portraits, at least make better use of camera angles when talking to the villagers. Maybe Stardew Valley spoiled me too much but yeah, the dialogue feels kinda "empty"... By the way, do you know about Rune Factory 5?
Haha, I really hope so too! I think many people are vocal about it so chances are that they'll update them at some point. Like making the machines accept multiple items or something. And yup! People have been bugging me to get into Rune Factory and I'm waiting for 5 to do so. I originally thought it was gonna get released near the end of May, but that's only for Japan so I might cave in and get RF4 in a few weeks instead D:
I definitely enjoy the game but I was really hoping it would be closer to animal parade. I really feel like the bachelors specifically are super lacking. The makers are my biggest pet peeve, I wish they either didn’t take up so much space like 1 square instead of 4 or could que them to make more then one thing at a time. Even just being able to put them in a building so I didn’t have to look at a million of them. I also feel like the world seems awful small.
Yeah haha, I also tried to place the yoghurt maker in the barn when I unlocked that but the game wasn't having any of that :( The farm land is pretty vast but outside of the town there really isn't anything to explore. Which is a big shame especially since we have mounts now!
Glad you like the video! And I hope you have a good time once you get to pick it up. I'm sure that by the time it's on sale it'll be a lot better than it currently is. There are also quite a few quality of life updates coming in update 1.0.5. (somewhere in May) alone :)
Wow, I'm glad for such an in-depth, honest review. I haven't played a Harvest Moon game since "A Wonderful Life" (was that PS1 or PS2?), so I've been trying to decide if I should play this first or Friends of Mineral Town. Thanks for the info, but I'm still undecided. Lol
the lack of portraits and interesting dialogue with the villagers is unfortunate. Makes them feel so stiff and lifeless. Also big issues with framerates. I haven't noticed it lagging but it will just stop for a few seconds so that's unfortunate. I guess they haven't patched that part
Haven't really noticed the stopping/freezing, just the framerate drops. That said - I only really play the game via the docking station on the TV, maybe that helps a bit!
I wish the town was broken up. Like the stores were more spread out so you had more use for your horse and could explore more. Also so animals dont just spawn on your farm
Mini sprites slaves yeah 😅 In general am a fan of this series but is a letdown with dialogues and the constant reminder of festivals 3 days before and after 😪
Oh god that dialogue is the worst haha. Like, I get it the game doesn't want me to miss the events but this is a bit much :p Hopefully it's one of the things they change in the future!
Normally I would wait for a sale, but I wanted to get the special edition with the poster and plushie lol. Plus, I made the mistake of not preordering the Friends of Mineral and didn't get the cow which now cost a lot on sites like eBay.
I really want to get this game. the last story of seasons game I got was on the 3ds. do you think that they might update and add more dialogue? I think that’s the one thing I’m worried about. I’m used to rune factory 4 where you rarely seen the same voice line twice, so I’m just worried I won’t like this game. I ended up dropping animal crossing for this reason too. but if there’s a chance more dialogue might be added in a patch later on I’ll get the game
If Marvelous listens to the community I think they will make changes to the Makers and Dialogues first because most people aren't happy with those. I think they're working hard on the performance issues first though, so only time will tell!
Great video! I first tried playing the game upon release, but it didn't hook me. I picked it back up a few days, made a new farm on seedling mode (for a relaxing experience and not so grindy), and now I'm hooked. With the patches since release, the game does feel a bit better (such as being able to do multiple materials in the makers now). I'm wondering if you plan on posting a video with a review of the game updates/DLC?
Thank you! Glad to hear that you're enjoying it much more than before now. I do have a "1 year later" video on my project list for next year, but whether I'll make it really depends on other games releasing around that time as those might have a higher priority
Ok I really enjoy the game a lot now & getting to know the townspeople was amazing & meeting Damon was the best part ever in the game & farming & taking care of animal was fun too ☺️
Tempted to get the game on sale. But wow I really wish they would ease up on the cow designs. I know it's a Moomin cute style but I find it really off putting when you have bunnies, chickens, sheep, horses and a dog that don't match the art style as the cows. Really love how they did cows in Story of seasons OG and Trio of towns on the 3DS. It was cute but not too cute where it doesn't look like the animal it represents anymore.
For the makers, idk why they didn’t just make it so you only have to build one and it just automatically makes the item without there being a stack limit make it balanced too with fuel. Like I wouldn’t mind having to put in coal or wood to make ingots and having a little windmill to power the other makers that don’t “need” fire. I just don’t get the stack limit on makers 😓
Yeah a facility-type place like you mentioned would've been perfect - it'd look a lot better too! Thankfully they're updating the makers soon though by allowing multiple items to be added at once :D Just uploaded a video on my channel about it if you're interested!
I'd love it if you reviewed it with the updated patches and see if it is better now. As well as the dlc so far to hear your thoughts. I personally love it now because the makers aren't a pain in my rear and my only complaint is that there is nothing to do in the dlc areas but it still worth it for new cutscenes with Characters and outfits. I just wish there was special fish or maybe animals to tame you can't find elsewhere. (I miss the fruit cow and the strawberry cow from fomt). I hope they keep updating the dialog but I think the daily dialog has gotten better.
Thanks Emily! I don't want to make promises as it depends how busy work will be and which other games are releasing, but I'm planning doing a '1 year later' video where I go over updates and DLC once the game reaches its first anniversary. It sounds exactly what you're looking for :)
Oh and I saw today that the Japanese version has received an update where you zoom in on the faces while talking to people. They're not portraits but should make the dialogues much better! :D
the town development felt really lacking, its a good start, but really needed to be expanded to be useful, good for making gold though. Its a solid game. I think I still like Stardew valley more, but SoS' art style is very much better
Glad you enjoyed it! :) Actually found that about Coral Island yesterday thanks to another viewer. It looks insanely good so I'll be following the development. It really depends when it will go into alpha/early access/releases as I might be busy with another game or a big project at work, but I definitely plan on covering it in some way!
A problem I had with this game was the inventory and storage systems; they seem kinda archaic, what with having to create more separate storages with multiple boxes (making things harder to organize and find), having to have materials in your inventory in order to craft things, having such a limited inventory space, and having a limited amount of space in the shipping box. Trio of Towns' storage and inventory systems were much better.
It seems okay but after being spoiled by rune factory its hard to find the same appeal. the one thing i like more about story of seasons is im not hoarding as much stuff and feeling like i have to keep track of a ton of resources. like min/maxing. ive been ruined by jrpgs cant even just have fun ahahaha
I was checking this video exactly to know if gay marriage was possible since i was disappointed of SoS on 3DS for not making it possible, but i ended up appreciating the game graphisms especially and considering buying it. Then at 4:15 you raised by hopes so high that i will definitely buy the game. Thanks for the good review (for the whole vid tho, not only for that marriage part x) !
@@Swrinny i think it will be hard to choose ! I'll make my choice when i'll know more about their personalities. But for now, after reading a few about them, i have a preference for Jack, Reina and Linh 😊
I had this preordered but cancelled when I saw all the videos with makers cluttering up farms. It seems like this new game director wanted to imitate other newer successful farm/life sims instead of just improving on what made previous SoS great. I saw somewhere that he said this would be the best SoS game yet, sounds like ego got in the way of just giving fans what they like.
Yeah honestly I thought you'd at least be able to add more items to the makers so that was a bad surprise. The workaround I showed (moving them to a place outside of my farm) does give me some peace of mind though
This video is really well made, not sure why it’s not more popular. The only reason I want to play SOS is those CHUBBY COWS! I want hundreds of them ☺️ Otherwise the game play isn’t all that appealing to me esp the weird machine looking thread makers that looks like an ATM, they don’t look like they belong on a farm. I also heard dialogue is almost nonexistent with other villagers, they repeat the same one or two lines over and over.
Thank you so much! The chubby cows are the best haha, especially the strawberry ones (which aren't in PoOT sadly :c). Yeah the makers and dialogue are a big issue. They're slowly improving the game through frequent patches, I'm curious to see what the game is like in a few months
Does the snow ever fully cover the ground and trees in winter? I've seen a few videos that show wintertime and the snow just looks sparse. Just a few patches of it here and there.
Nope it doesn't sadly. The town is barely covered in snow either which is a shame. I kind of expected the town being covered in more of it, along with some cozy Christmas decorations or something but no :c
I just think there is too much to keep up with. I think they should've let us craft with raw materials so we have less makers. Only keep the stuff to make animal products. And it would be nice if once we cleared our farm, nothing grew back but we could plant our own trees and there was a separate forest area where trees and such would regrow.
I think the ease of use direction these games are going dramatically reduces the lasting appeal of the games. I know its easier to do a spinning axe attack and cut down a 100 trees, but doing that takes away the direct, focused work that makes you feel accomplished and invested. Watering an entire field with a big flourish is easier, but you don't feel like you've invested any time and work in your crops and doing this somewhat tedious work is what builds lasting memories of time put into the game. You don't want it to be overly time consuming and boring but going full on the other direction and making it effortless to harvest, scavenge or grow is arguably just as bad.
Definitely agree with feeling less accomplished the more easy/accesible certain things are. In hindsight - the farming aspects did end up feeling like something on the side where in earlier games it felt like "I really need to get this right otherwise I'm gonna be in financial trouble" :p I guess they wanted to allow you to get 'more' out of your day, but I think a better approach for this would've been to increase the amount of real-life minutes it takes for a day to pass.
Trio Of Towns is still the best SoS out there they should have kept what made ToT so good but instead they made a lot of mistakes especially with the machines and the social part, it's a good game overall but not compared to past SoS games.
Yeah I'm not sure either why they wanted to add so many new, yet unfinished things. If they would've focused their time on improving things like the makers and the social interactions they would've made their original fans a lot happier! Hopefully they'll work on this in the future.
@@Swrinny I guess it was just odd for me that none of the townspeople acknowledged the accomplishment (it's the only building that didn't show up at the store~) It felt like I was truly alone in town-- I mean I guess I always was, but I never felt it until that moment. If you've finished MTaP, it had a similar vibe: do this grand project but nothing really comes of it, you know?
@@eternity449 "It felt like I was truly alone in town" - that one hits hard because it really felt that way throughout the game :c I don't know if you've had your birthday ingame yet, but that is such a lonely experience too. Like, I wasn't expecting something as crazy as villagers throwing you an actual party like in Animal Crossing, but at least someone dropping by, a scene at the cafe, or anything. But yeah, I get ya
I just use the gardens that keep the same season year round. You can unlock them pretty early and you can grow trees there too. You also don't need 50 of one of the rarest ores in this game.
I enjoy it it’s a fun happy game to play there are some mechanics I don’t like. Friends of mineral town a remake of a remake is the best version on the switch but I do enjoy pioneers of olive town.
I like the game so far. It is the first game I bought of the series. But the bunny event was so disappointing (just a cutscene...) and the dialog and character events seem boring and pointless :( but still having fun tho cause that are the cutest farm animals I have ever seen in a farm game :p
Yeah agreed, the cutscene events get better once you can bring a date but that takes a while! Really loving the farm animals too and also really happy you can have so many of them early on in the game now
Do you mean the patch that fixes the loading times & framerate drops? It should have released today, I can check after I get home from work! The video footage is from before the patch
I bought PoOT... and felt extremely disappointed afterwards. The game feels sort of... "westernized" to me for lack of better word(Visible for example in the fact you choose your gender after creating your entire character... smells of wanting to pander to certain kinds of people), and somehow more low-budget and previous Story of Seasons games I've checked. Also even though game isn't really voiced, the single "hey" and such characters said sounded english dubbed to me... which is a major flaw to me, because I can't stand english dub even in vaguely anime-ish aesthetic like that. And speaking of the art style, characters actually look worse than in Harvest Moon One World... and that's not a good sign when ultra-budget cash grab like it does something better. Overall, it's very disappointing to me, and now I fear Rune Factory might be next on "westernization" chopping block with how the western publisher was able to strongarm the Japanese developers into developing let's say an "inclusivity patch" adding gay marriage before fixing bad framerate and long loading time issues... for the record, nothing wrong with having more options, but if it's prioritized over fixing existing issues... that's just bad.
For me PoOT is definitely better! FoMT was great but felt pretty outdated in terms of things you could do. I didn't have the nostalgia factor though as I never played the original on the Game Boy Advance, I can imagine that this can play a big role in your preference.
Ok good game so far wish they eould do something with the makers get rid of puddles tress that keep comming back inporve more dialog with your spouse and celebrate birthdays and wedding anniversary make more festivals to the game and make it were your child you do more stuff with ad well
Haven't played it so can't say. From what I've seen the biggest change/difference is that Natsume is trying a new concept that adds more of an adventure-feel to it so if you're into that you could look up some gameplay videos of it
@@Swrinny I have looked at some reviews which are mostly negative and I am aware of the Marvelous Natsume breakup, the last Harvest Moon game that I played was A Wonderful Life, I have considered coming back to the franchise, I'm just wondering if this game is worth buying
@@riftshredder5438 This game should be more in line with the original Harvest Moon series. So if that's what you're looking for you can always give it a go, especially if the reviews for One World are mostly negative
The makers make me think of a worse version of the ones in my time at Portia. I’ve recently gotten back into playing Harvest Moon games and wanted to see what this and one world were about. Sad they started messing around with it this way. 😔...
A peeve I have is when people compare harvest moon /story of seasons to Stardew valley when it's the other way around! Stardew Valley was inspired by and took elements from those original games 🤣😂
Since I’ve not played a game in this franchise in forever, as far as the same-sex romance, is there a way to opt in/opt out of it? Or to put it in other words, is there any way I can be friends with the same-sex candidates (like one would with the rest of the village) without triggering the romance part from happening? Or am I going to have to be an asshole or otherwise distant to them if I don’t want to romance them?
Yup! So there are 10 hearts that you can fill to grow your bond. Each heart gives you a special event after meeting them the next time. Heart events 1-5 are purely friendship (with a hint as possible romance here and there) and from that point you need to give them an item (confession pendant) to go into boyfriend/girlfriend territory. Heart events 6-9 are then focused on romance and after that you can get married via another item. If you don't give them a confession pendant, you can still increase your bond with them but the romantic heart events just won't happen. Hope this helps!
@@awkwardsilence4427 Hey - sorry not sure about that one. I only really pursued one person back in FoMT. I advise to post your question on the Story of Seasons subreddit - someone will help you out in no time :)
Hello, I have pioneer of olive town on the switch, and I was looking for new friends on my switch. Any kind of help would nice? Thanks and have a good, and peaceful day. Enjoy 😊
It’s like comparing a meal Gordon Ramsey prepared to McDonald’s. “Harvest moon” games now are crappy mobile games with cheap graphics and bad mechanics. Story of seasons is the actual harvest moon and it’s not even worth comparing story of seasons is light years better as it’s the real harvest moon.
Anytime! Yeah I don't think there's a single person happy with those haha. For what it's worth - in an upcoming patch (1.0.5.) they'll allow you to place more items in the machines so they're taking some steps in the right direction with that
