A deeply flawed and eccentric, even disturbed, main character. A grotesque situation related to crime or violence. Dry ironic wit used to make social critique. Hell, this is better post-modern Southern gothic writing than anyone not named Ambrose Bierce or William Faulkner! WAY better than Eudora Welty or Anne Rice.
