I feel like even if you'd kept it, eventually whoever was depositing the money would have been like 'whoa where's my 20k?!' and followed that up with the bank...like you'd have been discovered eventually and been in trouble for keeping money that's not yours, so you probably avoided something bad in the long run :')
@kichan
@kichan 7 лет назад
I don't think you'd get 'in trouble.' But the bank might be like "Oh heeeeey, so someone accidentally added such and such money to your account so we're taking it out!" which could in a sense lead to trouble if it puts you severely in the red. But as long as you don't spend it, and you didn't do anything to put the money in there it's not really your fault. It's the other person's responsibility to make sure the money ends up in the right place, not you. They probably didn't even locate the person who originally deposited the amount, so the bank just got $20,000.
@kartos.
@kartos. 7 лет назад
George B They would have just taken it out. I had Commerce or TD do that to me years ago, they wouldn't do anything about the extra money, and then just took it back at the worst time a month later, fycking up my entire account.
@kartos.

They will find out on such a large amount, and they will take it back.

Im in Australia- here most banks contacts the person you transferred/deposited to but the person isn't forced to give the money back, nor can their bank force the money out of their account because technically you/the person who transferred is lying and trying to get back money that they intentionally meant to transfer to you.

Jeez! Open a new account at a different bank, these guys shouln't do business! I wouldn't trust them one more second with my money! By the way great job on doing the right thing, first of all you wouldn't have gotten away with it (it would have taken a little bit for them to figure it out, but they would have eventually) but still you did the right thing and this is something to be proud of. Also, great story telling :-)

Ohhh gurl...March 2016 I was only six months living in Pennsylvania after having moved from Virginia and was down to my last of everything. I was hungry and it was a few days before bills were coming due again (which I was behind on) so I did like you do and checked my balance (expecting maybe a few dollars to my name) Nope...over $14000 USD! My mind went to all the places ours did (although I did order pizza for the night) and I called Social Security the next morning to see what the issue was since the money came from them. After a half-hour, we figured out where the money came from and that it was LEGIT MINE! A major break when I most desperately needed it!

Similar thing happened to me, me and my friends when we were living together had a joint bank account which we only used for rent and bills on our flat at the time. Our rent money came out as a sanding order at the end of each month. AAAAAANNNNYYYYway, we moved out at the the end of uni, we cancelled the standing order and that was that. Or so we thought! A month later my friend checked and we were minus £1000 in that account, plus an extra £12 for being withdrawn for 2 days. Basically, the person at the bank didn't process the standing order cancellation through properly (I get it, we all make mistakes) and so the money was taken when it wasn't there, and sure enough, we were charged for money that was not there. They didn't however refund us the £12. Which I'm still angry at to this day! OOOOOHHHHH! The things I could have done with that £12! I mean, I know it's only £12......but it's the principle damn it!

I once had about $120 missing from my account. While waiting for the bank to figure out what happened to my money, my insurance automatically withdrew my payment causing an overdraft. Luckily my bank was helpful---in both returning my missing money and NOT charging me for an overdraft due to the missing money. It was pretty stressful though!
@occasionallycreative2251

so a very similar thing happened to me and i ended up having $1k of someone elses money for a few weeks because it took my bank forever to figure it all out or whatever and heres the thing, it wasnt a result of a person transposing digits in an account number or anything it was bc my bank had deposited my payroll check multiple times so my account was credited multiple times and basically the law is even though it is in your account through no fault of your own, you are liable for it so should you use it and they choose to take it back later (and it can be any number of years later) you will have to pay it back and can be jailed for theft if you were to spend any of it which is crazy

I had very similar. Kind of. My Human Resources over payed me. I notified my company. They not only took the over payment, they also took out what I was suppose to get paid and some extra. This kind of happened to me... someone stole 40 bucks from my account by walking into the bank pretending to be me in a different state. I go the next day to where I go and they ask me are you sure you weren't in Texas yesterday!?!?!? Me: clearly I can't because I am here right now. Bank: you sure you didn't give anyone your information Me: no. I don't know anyone from Texas or did I give out my information to anyone. They showed me the papers the person sign and asked is this your hand writing Me: I wish I could write that nice Bank: oh okay so you sure it wasn't you Me: 😑 yes I am sure it wasn't me They gave me bank the 40 bucks and within a couple of days they gave me another 40. I used it the money and closed my account

Reminds me a little (but also like.. not really) of ~5-6 years back when I realized my WoW account was activated even though it had been months since I played and someone, among other things, had: maxed out the levels, added a lot of great new gear, mounts, farm items, pets etc and left *bleep*loads of gold on Every. Single. One. of my characters! And I managed to quite annoy some of my friends with my reaction, but this simply didn't sit right with me AT ALL. I've kind of always been protective about the.. "authenticity", if that makes sense.. of 1. nonsentient things I claim ownership of, especially if I also ascribe them any level of "uniqueness", like personal characteristics, storyline, style etc (as a child, I HATED if someone "played my toys the wrong way", such as changing their personality heavily or even name. Almost like it "disrespected" the "integrity" of the the thing itself or the bond I had to it - wasn't the type to ever object aloud, though, just to clarify) and this felt somewhat close to that, I think. And 2. (Probably more so) what I can sincerely credit myself / take credit for in any way. I've got kind of an "I'll just do IT ALL by myself"-attitude in general (and take great pleasure in that) and don't like having others do any job I've set up for myself for me (making me feel robbed, even when given TINY amounts of help with things I'm ABLE to manage myself, of the full sense of accomplishment when reaching a goal - which is a huge part of what makes gaming an enjoyable experience for me to begin with. I like looking at something that required a lot of effort and know that "Yes, >I< DID THAT!"). Plus, everything (action bars, bags etc) was in a complete mess. I'll be the first to admit I'm a silly brat though.

I think you're right: "Q" was messing around with you. The taking of YOUR $5.00, and charging you for an overdraft - adding insult to injury as it were - is just the kind of trick that "Q" would love to play on a human. Moral of the story: Murphey's Law is the "supreme law of the land", and one would do well to never forget that fact! Thanks Ange, and I'm glad it worked out and your bank straightened out the mess without even more anguish to you than there already was!

I had several thousand deposited in my checking as a disability claim (I could view the check someone deposited using the ATM). The persons check had my name on it and they did not realize their last name was not spelled correctly, and apparently also had a similar account #. I called the bank to correct it because this is someone's disability check for them + family and they were like oh are you sure?

You know getting a legal name change still means all your old information is still traced back to you. The government has both the old and new name on file. This is to prevent criminals from avoiding crimes and keep people from trying to escape debt payment. Every past account you've had is still attached to your new name even if the accounts are closed. If you change your name illegally you'd have to use alot of that 20k paying for well made black Market id's , birth certificate and passport. Getting a Sin number made so you can work, buy a house get car insurance ect would cost even more. Then you have more criminal Charges against you than just bank fraud but also identity fraud. If you don't get new ID you won't be able to work, good luck renting without proof of who you are. This is a bad plan all around. Maybe if it was enough to live off for the rest of your life but 20k isn't that much in the long run and definitely not enough money to get arrested for fraud over.

@Kittyxandra19
@Kittyxandra19 7 лет назад
Well that depends if they even found out or not. Like she said, they didn't even believe her and they didn't do anything until the second time she called. You could also potentially come up with a lie and say that it was your money. And again, the banks are insured.
@BooBaddyBig
@BooBaddyBig 7 лет назад
The people who own the money will usually show up at the bank eventually and then the bank will sort it out in the way I said. There are cases in which you end up keeping the money, but you have to repeatedly tell the bank over a long period, that they've made a mistake, and you have to end up believing that it's genuinely yours; otherwise it's theft and you can literally go to jail.
@Kittyxandra19
@Kittyxandra19 7 лет назад
BooBaddyBig well personally I've been through hell with banks before, and there's all kinds of possibilities for different situations. It really just depends on the bank, their policies, and the individual situation. It's true that the bank probably would eventually be able to figure out what happened and make it right, but each case is different. You seriously never know with these kinds of things. There isn't just one right answer.

So about a year ago, i worked at the airport. I had been working at the airport for about 3-4 months when this happened. I went to buy lunch at the airport, like i did almost every single day, when it got declined. I checked online banking, i had plenty of money in my account, so i was like okay whatever, use this other card from the same bank different account, declined as well. I call them up on my lunch break, kinda freaking out because i have like 20 minutes left and I'm starving. Turns out, from using my card at the airport so much they began monitoring it, and when I continued to use it there they froze both accounts to be safe. Now thats nice an all, like good on them for protecting my money i guess, but one. How is it considered suspicious activity when i am using it at the same food stand, at the same airport for almost 4 months?? Also how did it take them four months to notice this activity, in that time all my money could have been gone lol it was resolved pretty quickly, I didn't get lunch that day unfortunately but i got a good laugh out of it instead.

They removed the single dollar from my paypal, but never the 30 dollars from the gift card. When I went in to pick up my order, I tried to tell the cashier that I still had money that didn't belong to me. He didn't get it and just told me to call customer support. I did that and tried to explain once again that they need to process the charge. When I was younger (like hella younger) I opened a checking account and since I was a minor, I wasn't able to put money in regularly. So I had under what the minimum for my bank was and one time the bank charged the account for being under that amount. My dad had to call them up and say "uh...this is a minor's account they don't have access to regular deposits." The bank apologized and refunded the money, but didn't say we had to re-up the 'student' status every year. So this kept happening for three years straight until my parents asked why this kept happening. THEN they were like "oh you need to renew the status every year." *sigh*

Something similar happened to me! I called the bank immediately and they thought I was making it up. I convinced them that it was a mistake. Ultimately, they couldn't fix the situation, so the closed my bank account :-)

Oh GOD this happened to me once! But with like 500€! I was 14 though, so that money was just an INSANE amount to me. The lady at the bank seriously asked me how much money I'd had in the account before they accidentally dropped that motherlode in there and when she heard I only had about 3€ in there before, she seriously started laughing at me. LADY! I was 14! I'm still pissed about that tbh ...

There's an app for the public transit in my city that you can buy bus/tram tickets with when you tether your card to it. Last year I got a new phone and needed to reupload the app and when I synced my account I had I randomly got 10 ALL DAY PASSES AND 30 2-HOUR PASSES. I didn't know what to do and to be honest I'm extremely poor and was using transit a lot to get to work so I kept the tickets and didn't call support. I'm still working through those free tickets today.

As an artist, I would have been DEVASTATED to give back $20,000. xD

How much trouble could a person actually get in for keeping that money? Like, if it's the bank's mistake then it shouldn't be the person's problem lol

You should have at least 5% for announcing the mistake. AND you should have hours of salary for calling and sitting at the phone. Why are you such a nice person?
