As a reseller, you sometimes get stuck between buying things you enjoy versus what can earn you a paycheck. Marvel cards - despite its whirlwind ups and downs found that very thin middle ground for me at the end of the day.

Marvel vintage cards with high grades that are hard to grade will hold value. See the fleer ultra 1994 X-Over Silver cards 1-3.

Thanks for giving your perspective into the economics of card trading, it’s good info for people like me who collected when we were younger and are trying to collect now in modern times. It’s easy to let you emotions take control and then you wind up over paying for something that you really want . Personally I’m a collector but you do come across cards that you may not want and then you might want to sell them. So thanks for sharing your experiences.

Great deals to be had right now on Marvel cards Ebay. Nearly every 90's base sets for $30-40 some sub $30. Picked up Xmen series 1 Jim Lee for $28, and 92 Marvel Masterpieces $35.

Marvel cards still appeal to alot of people given its broad range of entry prices, nice artwork and characters that are relatable to them today and before. For investment and reselling of singles, its a tough challenge IMO where most big money actually goes to breaking sealed products.

I like now that I can pull a numbered card from nonsports cards and I think that will help Marvel cards for future collectors. I never got into Pokemon because they seemed overproduced and felt they would lose value because if it.

I’m glad you mentioned the MCU. Endgame came out in April of 2019, closing out phase 3 and culminating all the previous movies. So, that surely had a huge impact on a resurgence of interest in Marvel. I’m sure some prices HAVE come down since that late 2021, early 2022 surge but I’m not sure it can be said “dramatic” drops. I’ve been researching historical prices for many sets, including 2013 Fleer Retro, and the prices do seem to be solid still, albeit a little less dramatic. Looking at actual sales over the past few months, we’re seeing even reds still hitting thousands, depending on characters. I do have a few questions about your experience and perspective. With the constant sets being pushed to the market by Upper Deck, is this a good or bad thing for past investments or future considerations in your opinion? Seeing sealed boxes of 2013 Fleer Retro selling for $40k is nuts. What do you think about sealed investing in Marvel for upcoming sets? Cheers and thanks for the information! Very helpful!

Thanks for the great comment. Sealed Marvel boxes is something I've been toying for a quite a while BUT the production volume is greater than every plus there is alot more people doing the same thing. Back in the 2013, no one ever thought of stashing away the boxes and just basically ripped them to put together sets or get the cards they want. These days - alot of people are stashing away boxes, but will affect the price growth in future as there will be alot more available inventory for a 2022 product vs a 2013 Fleer Retro. Does that justify Fleer Retro sealed prices to be 40k? - That's a whole different topic.

@@TheCardBoss absolutely agreed about retro. Nobody knew it would explode to those levels, and the series itself had fairly low print numbers and overall expectations. They printed approximately 800-900 cases total, but then, it’s hard to make judgements based on 2013 Fleer Retro because that is an enigma in the Marvel card space. We can’t really expect every series to go through the same life span. But from what I can tell, the higher interest in things like, say, Masterpieces, does spawn opportunity for both collectors and investors I think. Mid to long term sealed boxes has some steady rise potential. However, some sets seem to get pushed aside over time, like Gems or even Premier. A bit too high end niched perhaps? Less grounded and collectable. Thanks for your reply, I find it fascinating. When I took a break from cards, I came back to a wild spike in interest and value, so I’m still reeling! Appreciate the videos and analysis 👍

Card market isn't that much different than stock market. Retail and investors like to buy high and sell low. 2013 retro is over 20k a box yet people are selling amazing cards for nothing. Don't be surprised in a year if you find out I have 10-20% of print run. I love the set and taking getting as much as I can.

Curious if you ever ended up sending that 1995 marvel masterpieces set in to CGC for grading?
@TheCardBoss
@TheCardBoss 6 месяцев назад
Short version of the story is I had every card sleeved and in the semi-rigid card savers but the package was sooooo heavy. So i considered the cost of shipping (from Malaysia) and 4x the shipping cost coming back (after being slabbed) it was going to be insane just on the shipping alone - circa around $1000 for 300+ cards. Hence the only way it would make sense would be to have it shipped to PSA and have it vaulted and sold from there so save costs. The inserts all went first and the grades were less than satisfying but managed to sell everything. I had one of the Mirages "stolen" so that was a bummer, but I had a good offer on the signature series set (raw) and went with that and am currently holding on to the remaining base set (raw), which is Nil cost after everything was said and done. Whew!

Marvel cards have been going down for over a year. Bad investment as they will continue to go down back to 2017 levels, which is bad.

Think my vid covered the wild swings for Marvel cards, and the similar trend in alot of other collectibles that rose and fell between 2021 to 2022. Marvel IMO has kind of stabilised but its a collectors market from hereon.

When the economy is bad and cash is king. A niche market like Marvel gets crushed. No one cares about it because it's not like sports. It doesn't generate excitement. I wouldn't ever buy marvel card personally.
@TheCardBoss
@TheCardBoss 7 месяцев назад
Hobby is basically doing (or collecting) something you enjoy for reasons that works for you, but not necessarily the same for others. I agree sports has the wider audience, but the marvel has its own strong community.
@SeemsLikeSomething
@SeemsLikeSomething 7 месяцев назад
You’re correct that sports, or even tcg for that matter, are much bigger. But keep in mind these marvel collectors are all old school card guys now. They grew up with the impel stuff and recent interest in marvel in the theatres, along with immense nostalgia, can drive that smaller community pretty hard. Collectors go hard no matter the category. Their numbers aren’t quite as small as ya think. Oh, and now that they’re all middle aged, it means they have some money to work with. Important point. The average Marvel collector likely has more disposable income than the average Pokémon or sports collector.

@@TheCardBoss the way I looked at it was why spend $20 on a marvel card when I can get a marvel comic for the same price. It's like buying source material. It's like buying a piece of gold rather than a photo of a piece of gold for the same price

@@TheCardBoss comics are like oversized cards anyway, plus it's better for the eyes, less squinting, only potential downsides are they take up more space, are more condition sensitive, Toploaders cost more, and pay more for shipping

@TheCardBoss 7 месяцев назад
Yes and no. For Marvel, there is an affinity to these characters which had some impact or nostalgia during our childhood. Then when you get the perfect storm of excess capital and a lot of people looking for the same thing because of this nostalgia, you get spikes in prices where demand outweighs supply.
@SeemsLikeSomething
@SeemsLikeSomething 7 месяцев назад
@@TheCardBoss Agree. Nostalgia and long term historical foundations combined with middle aged collectors, equals movement in the market. There’s only so many times you can look at a guy in a uniform holding a baseball bat before it gets a bit boring, albeit the stats and career are the drivers for sports. Mind you, comic cards have endless presentations.
