One of the best horns I've ever played was a straight Keilwerth SX90 alto. The intonation was incredible, and the tone was amazing. But I kept banging it on things behind me, because when you hold it like you would a normal horn, it sticks out behind you.

The Alto sounds almost like a saxcello (soprano) saxophone - as played by King Curtis, 1934-1971 King Curtis played a lot of "Smooth (Pop)-Jazz" on saxcello (soprano) saxophone: Honey, That Loving Feeling, Soul Serenade ( not live), Something, Somewhere, On Broadway, A Change Is Gonna Come, La Jeannie, Little Green Apple, Wichita Lineman... Great soprano sax: control, tonal quality, phrasing, melodic variation, fills and embellishment. Recommend for students: beginners, middle and high schools... Lohvissimo!

With all due respect, this is just a gimmick ("turn heads"). I prefer the bell in front. Actually this is why I sold my straight soprano and got a curved one. when the bell is in front of you the sound spreads much nicer and the player can also hear themselves.

Added to the list of stupid saxes I WOULD KILL FOR. (Maybe bellow the Soprillo though).

I got to trial a Keilwerth stencil straight alto of some sort (can't recall the name) back in 2002/3 during my time in Belgium, and I remember how bassoon-like it sounded in the lower octave. Fun to play, but I took it back.

Why are they not so popular? I have 2 sopranos S&C and a Ref54 alto but Everyone thinks the soprano suits me better, So I bought a Dakato straight alto, to get used to playing an alto, but never play it still have the cover on the pads. Have U ever try one, & the downside to it?

I've played these before.. .the tone is nice, but the straight design makes it harder for the player to hear themselves.
