The question of nozzle selection and nozzle technique for interior firefighting has long been at the heart of both training and debates. It is therefore a source of great divide between firefighters, many holding a strong position on the subject. During this presentation, Lars will give his view of the history. Why are we here, why do we hold the beliefs we hold. And he will present his views on where we are going next. While doing so also putting nozzle selection and nozzle technique into the broader context of firefighting.
Here you have another longer presentation I made on the same matter:

This presentation is humours, which is important, because there is also science. Fire fighters have short attention spans, you have to keep us engage to get your point across!. The presentation seems to have kept the open and closed minded-alike engaged, which while it will never convince everyone to consider alternatives, at least they saw the science and have more knowledge to share and discuss? I watched this as a "SB guy" to see that what fuss was about from the fog cooling perspective. I wanted to be educated on the "other" point of view so I can be more proficient in my conversations on the topic. Imagine my surprise when you swung it around to show the benefits of what the 'other guys' are preaching! As with anything in the fire service, we simply cannot come to a singular solution that encompasses all scenarios we may encounter. This may be seen as a cop out for some. However, once you know all of the tools on your truck and how they are most effectively used, you can make better tactical decisions both as a boot and an officer. If one finds oneself hating on a technique, tool, or presentation, because it differs from what you were taught, perhaps the first order of business should be to ask oneself, why is 'my' what the right way? What if there is more than one way? What's wrong with a better/different way? If we don't grow, learn, change, adapt, evolve, prove most effective, how are we serving our customers in the best light? Thanks Lars, love your work. Keep it up!

Lars, thanks for the great lecture. I've been following the UL studies coming out over the last couple years about straight streams, and your lecture highlighted some of the issues with using fog streams in enclosed spaces really well. I'd never seen the 'engine' effect in a video before, and your diagrams explain why it happened very well. It mostly highlights the need for adequate and coordinated ventilation, as well as truly tactical decision-making as to which hose stream to utilize for any given objective rather than an either/or approach to all fires. Stay safe out there, brother.

Great presentation Lars, I have been following these subjects throughout my career, finally making sense. I hope to use this to share with my peers.

The footage doesn’t lie. Smoothbore for the win. Put the fire out as fast as possible, search for possible victims. Rescue>water damage. The building isn’t clear until we have searched it.

Awesome presentation Lars 👍🏻 ..... and of course the Dutch guy was angry because you just busted their fog stream bubble 😂 Thanks for putting all these stream questions and theories into perspective....

One thing to add is that in a lot of situations the straight stream can be used in bursts just like fog. A 2 second burst will give a good impact on the ceiling or walls and you wont have tons of water everywhere. Burst, shut down advance, repeat...

Hello, very good video. You are right, what you say is also my experience. I've been working with the full jet and dynamic jet pipe guidance for a long time. thanks for the great video.

Although i disagree at some points. I really like people that think outside the box. Unfortunately everyone is trying to fit in one , the American or the European. I understand this need when the heat is on. I always have Stefan Morissette and George Bogias words in my head whenever i asked them something. "IT DEPENDS"

Great presentation answered a few questions only problem is I have a few more now, great to be challenged and to challenge accepted beliefs. As a Brit with over 25 years firefighting I have used both systems so can see the validity of the answer "it depends" because it does, and have also been fed up with the my system is better than yours attitudes many thanks

My issue with the “demonstration” burn and the entrainment conundrum is that this is a log cabin which obviously means a significant larger HRR than a ‘standard’ compartment. You present valid points don’t get me wrong, but this seems to be a reasonably unique burn profile.
@swedishfirenerd

Why would it have a higher HRR Towyki? It is a ventilation controlled fire and the HRR is controlled by the amount of air going inside. And in reality it would be furnished with modern synthetic materials also. I would say that it does not matter in this case. And why would that matter a lot when it comes to pressurizing the compartment? The mount of air we are adding with a fog is very big. I would say that it does not.
