Straight ankle lock | Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu -
Jeremy Skinner is a brown belt Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner under Lachlan Giles and Craig Jones and competing out of Absolute Mixed Martial Arts, St Kilda.
In this video we look at setting up and finishing the straight ankle lock and how different leg entanglements assist in every stage of our straight ankle lock.
With series to leg entanglements we can overcome a variety of problems our opponent can give when looking to attack a straight ankle lock.
Starting with our initial control we want to connect to our opponent with a standard ashi garami and from there we build up.
Next we look to use a false hook ashi which will allow us to improve our grip for our straight ankle lock finish.
Lastly employing a butterfly ashi to strength our main finishing motion and letting us play off a strong inside leg.
The straight ankle lock is a leg lock submission that is legal for white belts and black belts, whether it’s Gi or NoGi. With this sequence we won’t risk getting disqualified for reaping but STILL have an effective leg lock.

Thanks for the great content! Once I establish the false hook with the outside leg I often find it difficult to pull out the inside leg. Either because the foot is “stucked” below their leg or because they control my leg. Do you have any recommendations for this? Thank you !

I really enjoy using the butterfly ashi for this finish, I started using it after getting caught and subbed by it in a competition 😂 for a future video could you cover how to defend it? I checked out the chapter list for your DVD and it didn't seem to be covered.

Certainly something I can look at in the near future! My ankle lock defences stem from my heelhook defenses 😁 I think against an advanced leglock game, both are important

Beat me to it. I had recently been caught in this position and my usual ankle lock defense was ineffective

Awesome video Jezz! I had a question about the movement for finishing the straight ankle lock, is it the movement similar to what you would use to finish a heel hook?
@jeremypaulskinner

Great question! For my straight ankle locks and heelhooks, there’s a general rule I like to follow: Same hip, same shoulder. What that means is which ever hip I have on the floor, I try and finish by taking everything to that same shoulder e.g. left hip on the floor, I take everything over my left shoulder.

Is this not an aoki lock? If it’s not can someone explain the difference?
