Thank you for explaining this! The chair I will be working on has a groove on the underside which would make knots a total headache. I think I might use this method instead.

Glad it was helpful!

Nice. I use a slight variation, where I pull the short up-strand up towards the next hole to be threaded to ensure overlap. I can then snip it inside the hole, rather than above it.

This is perfect! I am in the process of caning a 120 year old Lincoln rocker that was my great grandmothers. I was wondering how to finish the back seat! It would be helpful if you could provide a video of how this caning process works on the backs of these chairs! I ended up having to buy a book (which is OK) and in there they tell you to place 4-5 temporary vertical strands along the back curve and then to weave your horizontals BEHIND those temporary strands 1st. That is followed by your verticals, again woven BEHIND the temporary stands, making sure to remove the temporary stringers. Finally, the 2nd row of horizontals, again behind the temporary strands. After that stringing is done normally. Any comments or input on this?

That method will work, we use a different approach, though. We are in the process of making a video of it, it should be out in a month or so.

Great videos! Do you have a video of French/blind caning? I have a bentwood chair and the caning hole on the seat back do not go through the whole way....thank you

Glad you liked the video, no, we don't have a video on blind caning yet, sorry!

I have used "The Caners Handbook" for a while now and wish I had done this "no knot method" on both of my Lincoln rockers. It looks awesome. I've noticed in a couple of your videos that the chairs aren't finished before canning. Is the finish applied afterward and if so, what type of finish is it? Love the videos, thanks.

Hi, glad you liked the videos. We don't apply any finish, so I'm not the one to ask that question, maybe consult a furniture re-finisher?

I have a Sri Lanka planters chair. Because of the "s-like" curve in the back and seat, where does one start caning? Back to front as usual, or side to side?

I suppose that it would be important to leave just enough slack in the vertical canes (steps 1 and 3) to allow for the s shape curve. You would probably have a good idea by step 2 if things were too tight.
