Croatia`s borders are more of less the 1699 AD war borders from the Treaty of Karlowitz. Minus some Eastern parts that were annexed by Serbia & Montenegro ( Bay of Kotor) after 1918. The sea side town of Neum was actually handed back to Croatia before WW2 when the autonomous "Banovina of Croatia" was established by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After WW2 the Yugoslav communist party handed the Croatian populated town of Neum to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The bizzare borders of Croatia and Bosnia are simply due to the Ottoman conquests of the central part of Medieval Croatia. Northern and southern Croatia remained free of the Ottomans, but Central and Eastern Croatia were conquered. Eastern Croatia (Slavonia) was eventualy recovered, but Bosnia never was. Also most of the Croat population of Medieval Bosnia dissapeared trought the Ottoman period and thus today Croats are the smallest ethnic group in Bosnia. If not for those events Croatia and most of what is today Bosnia would be the same country today, it's without doubt Europe's strangest border, since these two countries are clearly the same patch of land from the physical/geographic aspect.

A question I've always wondered but I guess won't really ever be answered due to it being history is why did the eastern part of the German Empire and Weimar Republic have such a weird border in which even the ethnic German and ethnic Polish border is weirdly shaped like this "
@fermintenava5911
@fermintenava5911 2 года назад
The borders mostly grew out of to the three Partitions of Poland that occurred 1772-1795. Basically, the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had been fallen in a critical state, and Austria, Prussia and Russia seized the moment to get new territory. Prussia in particular wanted a connection between its Western and Eastern parts. And the Silesia (the southern parts) were already taken by Prussia in 1742 in the War of Austrian Succession, as it had belonged to Habsburg territory. But that's only half the answer, as Polish history is much more complicated than that, and there was happening much between 1795 and 1871.
@Rynewulf

Lots and lots and lots of wars in that between Prussia, Poland-Lithuania, Russia and Sweden, that ultimately saw Poland-Lithuania split apart, led to political borders that shaped the early modern ethnic/linguistic borders

Would also mention that *long* earlier, Bosnia was also a center of Bogomilism. Also many languages of southern China are Tai or more broadly Kra-Dai, a language family consisting of Thai and Lao/Isan more prominently. There are also very small Vietic language communities that live in China, (talking in the single digit thousands), so they aren't *entirely* gone, but mostly.
@d.b.2215
@d.b.2215 2 года назад
Most of the ancient "Baiyue" people as the Chinese called them were probably Tai-Kradai or Austronesian speaking. The Vietic speaking groups were in the far South - where Northern Vietnam is today. So basically only the Austronesian languages got wiped out from China, their last remnants are on Taiwan.

"Simply" when Serbia launched conquest of Croatia, trying to prevent Croatia's independence, Serbia also made a campaign of ethnic hatred and violence that resulted in expulsion of 70,000 Croats from NW Serbia. The rebelled Croatian Serbs did not fled. The rebels' parastate government organized the forced evacuation of them. Third, Republic of Dubrovnik was also the name; Romanic name Ragusa was in use because Latin and Italian were the language of higher classes, just like French in medieval England. Bosnia does not have the access to the sea. Herzegovina does. Bosnia is 100 km away. Dubrovnik Republic also sold the sourhern part of its territory (Sutomore) to Ottomans to evade direct land border with Venice Republic which held the Bay of Kotor (not drawn on Your map). However, in socialist Yugoslavia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina exchanged territories so BH remaibed w/o that sea access but got the Perućica area on north. Borders in socialist Yugoslavia weren't just administrative. These were the borders of republics that had greater degree of autonomy.

Croatia's ethnic map is incorrect. The majority of the soldiers on the military border in Krajina were Serbs. Krajina also included most of Dalmatia, Lika, Kordun, Banija, and Slavonia, all of which were populated by Serbs. Croatia today is the result of ethnic cleansing and genocide.
