As a note on the mushrooms - those mushrooms are extremely common in most of Russia and in fact is taught about in schools from as early as first grade. From personal experience growing up there, I doubt these experienced hikers would not be familiar with that specific type of mushroom.

@Stephanie Harlow @M Va agreed not to mention surely they would've known not to take a psychedelic drug when u r already in a bad mental state like they had to be at this point freezing starving scared it just doesn't make sense that their leader would've been okay with them eating those at that point in their hike. As it surely would've caused them to have bad trips scary hallucinations and not to mention not being in the right state of mind they needed to be in to get to safety. So I just don't believe it. And to Stephanie's question about them not thinking straight and just grabbing them out of hunger,maybe for the hikers but not their leader if we are to believe she was as great of a hiker as well as survivalist she would've known how to keep herself from panicking as well as you said she was used to not having hardly anything with her to eat on these hikes to lighten the load so I believe she would've been used to this type of hunger and still known those mushrooms wouldn't be the ones to eat.

Same, grew up mushroompicking everybody knows how fly agaric looks. Still there are some ppl every year getting hospitalized with poisoning. If you eat it raw you will have liver failure before any "tripping" effects. And the autopsy does not indicate liver failure.

@@StephanieHarlowe I've read that the leader was into extreme survivalism, and that on previous tours she would purposely keep the food and warm clothing to a minimum so that her groups would be ready for extreme situations and able to survive on very little. Splitting one portion of food between 3-4 people, etc. Also as someone who grew up in Russia, it's very unlikely that they ate the wrong mushrooms. Especially fly agaric

When you said they weren't able to start a fire, but fell asleep anyway in wet clothes, I was thinking they won't survive the night. I think they did have hypothermia, it would explain why they were half-dressed, because before you succumb, you feel really hot. I think the girl who survived may have hallucinated the other details. Hypothermia can really affect your perceptions and also affect your judgment, which is why Ludmila made such bad decisions. It seems like they had been dealing with cold conditions for days that they weren't prepared for. Sometimes we look for a bizarre explanation, when really the most obvious explanation is the truth.
@ΓιώργοςΚαπάτος

Tbh i dont believe that such young group of people can consider as expirienced hikers. Even Ludmila have a bad decision like a rookie mistake. I dont disrespect or disagree that they where capable of doing this in normal situations but apparently when things get out of hand they have being trapped. I'm not an expert so i don't know what happened but imo looking for the most strange explanation while missing critical details and basic infos its not smart.

Totally agree, the only thing that intrigues me is how Valentina’s story matched with where the bodies were (Lyudmila on top of Alexander etc). It’s weird cos she was clearly out of her mind, but could recall minute details? Also why does she still refuse to speak about it? Doesn’t she want the case solved?
@bunch_o_racket
@bunch_o_racket 2 года назад
@@acaciagrace9422 yeah but she is the ONLY witness and has already told everything as she remembers it. Plus, every time a person tells a story from memory, or even just HAS a memory, it changes a little and the changes becomes real to that person. Without any film or recording or anything but her brain to recall the incident, her taking about it (further traumatizing herself) isn't going to help solve it.
@arcane7298
@arcane7298 2 года назад
@@acaciagrace9422 I wonder if Ludmila survived like Valentina, but when she awoke and found the man that was like a son to her dead, she was overcome with guilt and had a heart attack while grieving over him. I don't think the breakfast ever happened. I think Valentina had a combination of hypothermia and trauma and her mind filled in a story around the dead bodies in the camp. I had hypothermia twice. The first time I was convinced that a man with knife was standing over me and I kept asking my husband if he was going to do something about it. I had no idea I was hallucinating. The second time, I was shaking uncontrollably, so it might appear to others like I was convulsing. That could be what Valentina witnessed. She may have PTSD or survivors guilt, which is why she won't speak about it.
@krisdiane
@krisdiane 2 года назад
Exactly my thoughts. Hypothermia most likely - the mushrooms a possible alternative, but I have a hard time believing an experienced forager would easily make that mistake.

The strangest thing for me is that we don’t know what they ate. It should have been simple enough to have an answer. Frustrating because to me it’s down to poisoning. By food or by chemical. Just knowing what they ate should leave us with the logical answer even if there’s not technical proof for it. If she was so traumatized she cant give simple answers even after all this time I’d say she was warned against it. And after what she saw it would not take much convincing.

Yes to Strange & Unusual! The only thing I can think of as to why they camped out in the open rather than under cover of trees is that the leader thought they would be more visible from the air if a rescue was needed. I recently saw a video about people missing in the woods, and one lady made the mistake of camping under a great deal of cover. There was an open field nearby & she would have been seen & rescued if she had used the open field. Her tent and body weren't found for years. Other than that, I don't have much to contribute to this strange story.

I like this new series. You should definitely do more. Also, we can probably rule out novichok. If you remember, the survivor had to go back to the bodies to get supplies and the map. If she had been that close to the toxin source, then she should have been affected since it had been no longer than a day since the initial incident. Plus, it would have taken her a number of minutes to gather the map and supplies. Increasing the likelihood of possible exposure. I think the magic mushrooms theory is a more likely scenario. Or possibly, since the instructor was so big on foraging the party could have accidentally consumed ergot. Ergot is a wild fungus that can be found all over the world, including the Urals, and is the source from which we get the hallucinogen LSD.
@neuralmute
@neuralmute 2 года назад
I'm of the opinion that ergot would be more likely than mushrooms. The Fly Agaric, which Stephanie mentioned, is *very* recognisable, being red with big white spots, and I doubt that an experienced hiker would forrage it by accident! Other mushrooms containing psylocybin aren't native to Siberia. Ergot poisoning, however, can have a lot of the same symptoms as a nerve agent, including convulsions like those reported by Valentina.

I'm Russian so I've heard another version. I remember reading about that incident that some people from the hiking club said that they often drank some herbal tea during hikes with Korovina. There's a rare plant in that area called Rhodiola rosea or "golden root". It's used in traditional medicine and it helps with fatigue and stimulates central nervous system. Some people say that they used it in hikes to go longer and eat less food. Also they say that during hikes they harvested alot of that root so they used a lot of it or maybe someone was saling it. There is a big unofficial version about excessive use of that root and intoxicaton. It's really interesting to hear how people from other countries explain cases from Russia (and helps learning English) but there're barely any videos like this.

In all honesty I think this was just a tragic case of hypothermia. I’m a nursing student and constantly people come into the ER wearing no clothes and incredibly confused due to hypothermia (you feel extremely hot when hypothermic) which would explain why they were half dressed. I think the lone survivor was also suffering the effects and hallucinated the less explained parts of the other hikers deaths such as the blood coming from their eyes. I think the convulsions she saw were probably intense shivering due to the cold. Hypothermia can cause intense hallucinations. They just were not ready for the cold temperatures. Absolutely tragic

This is really interesting, i've been waiting a while for you to cover a case from Eastern Europe and thank you so much for delivering. I do agree with the note pointed out on mushrooms, in Eastern Europe we learn from a very young age what mushrooms are edible fresh, which ones you have to boil before they become edible and which ones you cannot eat. Its knowledge passed down from grandparents. I therefore find it unlikely that they would have eaten hallucigens. With Ljudmilla being an experienced and dedicated hiker I find it unlikely she would have given them hallucigens for the journey. But regardless, it is an interesting theory!
