Strange World is BAD! 

Treasure Planet did the "neglectful father" trope in a single musical number better than this film did in its entire running time.

It's a really disturbing trend that gay characters tend to get the most mediocre and forgettable stories told about them.

I thought Raya had a terrible message too. It was all like, "Trust people who keep stabbing you in the back. If you don't, you're the problem." : /

This movie doesn't suck because it has a gay character. It sucks because it's boring, bland, dull, has unmemorable characters, and it's just a rip off of Treasure Planet.

Every day, I feel more and more awkward about being a Disney fan….

Sony did a better job at handling a gay character. Katie from The Mitchell’s vs the Machines didn’t have her sexuality as her primary personality, but rather her independent nature and love for film making.

When Lucy Liu's character came to pick up the main cast, I asked myself, "Ok, is this the twist villain? Or is this the boringly perfect leader who never does anything wrong?" I was legit shocked when they tried to make her both.

Even when I learned that this movie existed, it just looked completely disinteresting to me. Not helping matters is that I can't even tell the difference between Disney and Pixar movies anymore. Literally, movies from the two look almost the same nowadays.

The first thought that entered my head when I first seen the trailer for this film, “Wait is this a Disney movie?”

Now I sort of wanna know the backstory of the large creature they live on. What does it do when it's NOT dying? Does it just float above the surface of the water for its entire life? Was it ever a baby? Does it have parents? Will it ever find love and have little island babies with them? Does it enjoy being the foundation for the civilization? Isn't it a little cruel for the people to just remain living on it if it's a living creature? Does it ever want to flip over and float on its back since its a turtle? Why does it have pink pterodactyls flying around its insides?!

SPOILERS BELOW: My question for the film is why didn’t the characters didn’t just find a different way to grow the Pando plant like in greenhouses or hanging them if planting them directly on the turtle’s shell was hurting him/her? Also, if wind power was always a thing in the film’s universe and works perfectly well as an alternative fuel source, why were they so obsessed with keeping Pando in the first place?

Honestly my biggest issue with the movie isn’t even the movie itself. It’s that conservatives everywhere were so eager to blame the movie’s failure at the box office on a gay couple rather than its mediocre writing, incredible lack of marketing and those who wanted to see it saying they’ll just watch it on Disney+. In fact the biggest amount of publicity this movie got was probably Ben Shapiro whining for 10 minutes about a film he hadn’t even seen yet.

Just the art style alone has me so uninterested in this. It doesn’t look or feel like a Disney movie. I could tell by the art style and story that this movie seems generic as hell. I skipped Lightyear, and I think I’ll skip this too. These newer Disney movies keep on disappointing me. Except Encanto. That was really good.

Speaking of films with barely no marketing, I can't believe the Night at the Museum animated sequel is coming out in about 2 weeks and I've seen absolutely no promotion for it at all except for one picture.

The story would honestly be better in Searcher's father was stuck in the Strange World and Searcher assuming that Jaeger never loved him only to discover that Jaeger was stuck in the Strange World and regrets not being a part of Searcher's life for 25 years.

I think I could forgive the movie if you know, *there was an actual villain!* Like maybe the president wanted to use the Pando as a weapon, Jaeger wanted to use his family to find a secret treasure, or hell make the turtle kaiju they've been traveling in the final boss that they have to put to sleep using the Pando. Give us an old school Disney villain already! 😡

So the “Strange World” that looks like Osmosis Jones raped James Cameron’s Avatar and the Hollow Earth is the shell of Gamera and the creatures that live there are like fleas on a dog? WTF?!?!

Honestly, I didn't even know Ethan was gay BEFORE I saw this video. I don't know if it was the advertising or if I live on a completely different side of the Internet than you. I was/ am still gonna go see the film regardless and form my own opinion but goddamn. The marketing for this film is truly atrocious, and I think I have a conspiracy theory as to why. I'm not even surprised that there wasn't a lot of attention on this movie. Unless it's a princess movie, Disney just won't put that much effort into it. I also think they were trying to capture lightning in a bottle again as Encanto also didn't get a lot of advertising yet became insanely popular.

The reason why Disney didn’t market Strange World a lot was because they didn’t have a lot of faith in this. You see, Sci-fi movies haven’t been treating Disney the best at the box office.

I think they did the generational trauma thing because it did so well with Encanto, and since they don’t like taking risks, they’ll redo the things that work

Don’t you just love when a studio like Disney likes to keep reminding you they’re hypocrites? But yeah, Yeager is such a terrible character.

I've also personally have had a neglectful parent. So, I can say that the average human being does not forgive a dead-beat parent that easily for choosing to be selfish over raising their child they had and left behind, who needed them the most. Especially after 20+ years. If anything, the father should have been very indifferent and honestly confused how to talk to the grandfather. Because he wasn't there and has had twenty plus years to get over the pain and heart break the grandfather left behind. if anything, HTTYD 2 did this kind of situation better when it came to Hiccup finding his mother again after believing her to be dead all his life and that she chose to stay with dragons. But there is a lot of differences between Hiccup's mother and Clay. Such as She isn't at all terrible and Clay doesn't hold a candle to her. It's a very thin stretch to even be comparing the two. This is just the closest comparison. I could think of how to write the emotions of a character in a scene and setting of re-meeting a parent who wasn't there for you for so long and how it feels... It's a very complicated feeling there is a lot of messy uncertainty, awkwardness and confusion of not knowing how to deal with them, when talking to them after not having them in your life. I was left feeling angry that the father forgave the grandfather just like that. Especially after hearing the beyond pathetic excuse and reason why he was gone. It was really terrible how they handled it.

So you’re telling me… This movie is also directed by the same guy who directed: The movie with the *worst* twist villain (Big Hero 6) & The movie with the most bafflingly awful message (Raya & The Last Dragon) I can’t tell if the director is just bad, or is trying hard to push Disney’s movie animation team past the stale barrier, but constantly has to dumb down the big things he goes for cause the higher ups say so. Hell, maybe he just never has time to flesh these concepts out. Still, mega yikes for me.

"Animation is clearly for kids!" I say we should apply a new rule that whenever someone says that they need to be introduced to Fritz the Cat and anything by Ralph Bakshi. Also some anime. Okay even by watching the tralier me and my mom basically predicted the big reveal of the movie but, SPOILERS..... They live on the back of a giant creature/ turtle and the strange world is just the insides of the turtles body, if we were able to pick that up just from the tralier alone then this movie was in trouble

I would forgive the intergenerational trauma plot thing if just once-- JUST ONCE-- Disney had the nerve to depict that the family is irreconcilable and the child that was neglected or abandoned does not forgive their parent. Is it sad, yeah, but for some people that is the only possible way to heal from a toxic family dynamic. Not every abuser has a "I'm sorry I was wrong" speech, and I'm sorry doesn't fix everything.

I disagree about Sisu. The worst character in Raya, to me, is the baby. I can believe that a child can be a good cook - Hell, my brother made some mighty mean pancakes when he was 10. But a baby knowing martial arts is just not possible. At that young an age, her brain would not be developed enough, to the point where she'd be able to understand moves like that, let alone master them. Nor would she be able to understand what people say to her, without also being able to speak herself.

Yeah, definetly dodged a bullet with this film. Hopefully wish (the next Walt Disney animated film) will be better, and the next pixar movie elemental

Honestly when we entered the strange world I thought it sorta looked like the inside of a body, like some stuff reminded me of stuff from what we learned in health class at school lol. Also some of the “monster” designs just screamed cells and immune system to me. Like when we reached the burning seas or whatever they called it I was like “that’s…a stomach, right?” Honestly I thought the twist was pretty interesting and kinda horrifying at the same time.

You wanna know why Luz and Amity are still the only good gay characters in Disney? Cause they were likable flawed characters who just so happen to be gay!

As with any character, you have to flesh them out or at least make them likeable and give them more than just one specific detail beyond just gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. You have to do more than assign a random character trait and point at it like it's somehow ground-breaking for that one detail alone. We are all people no matter what differences we have from one another, and we are more than the traits that describe only certain aspects of our personhood. We need characters who have personalities, idiosyncrasies, morals, interests, etc. because we don't get attached or interested in a blank slate that was given one or two details instead of a real character. We grow fond of that which feels real because we are real and experience the whole gamut of emotions, struggles, and all other aspects of life for good or ill. I'm fine with representation, but when all you do with a character is give them one trait that you make your selling point and do nothing else it becomes clear that you're only chasing the money. Viewing audiences, kids and adults alike deserve better than non-characters with no effort put into them. You can make your character anything you want them to be, but please do something to make sure part of that is an actual character. That shouldn't be too much to ask.

I'm gonna have to skip this premiere to avoid spoilers, but I'll edit this with my thoughts after seeing it tonight. *After I've Seen It* Okay, I agree with a lot of the points Raisor brought up, but, I still found the world and most of the characters interesting enough. And Jaeger, while not good, is nowhere near as bad as Buck Cluck, let's be real. You don't have to explicitly say "sorry" in order to apologize. And I don't recall him saying he wouldn't have come back if he wasn't stuck. Overall, I found it decent, a solid 6 or 5/10. I also don't get what people mean when they it's the worst rated Disney movie, I mean have you seen some of the scores from the 2000's? And about the whole "first gay character" arguement, I think Disney specifically meant in a film animated by Disney, though I agree their word choice is misleading.

Ok, finally watched it….and honestly, I had a good time with it. I understand where you’re coming from with the Dad. Lord, he was not written great, but overall, I had fun. Nothing groundbreaking, but nothing awful either, at least to me.

The 90s and early 2000s was definitely Disney's peak for good animation and story telling. It's all gone down hill since they became more preoccupied with shoving politics/representation into their movies instead of just focusing on telling a good story.

K as a gay person myself, I personally didn't think having a gay character in this movie was neccessary. I mean seriously he didn't do anything else with it, Being gay did nothing to serve the plot. He was just sorta there to say I'm gay and that's it. I get that we should be happy to be represented but...I dunno, Not Like That!! Why must every gay character in modern media be either an Overtly gay character or a nobody with nothing else to do and nothing going on with their life but "be gay"

Strange World feels like it was greenlit and had the barest minimum effort possible put into it because Disney wanted their first gay main character but also didn't give af about this movie, right down to copying the generational trauma of Encanto

The fact you said that the Dad in strange world is worse than BUCK CLUCK made me bursting out laughing for some reason 8:04 but I honestly don’t think the Dad in that movie is the worse well story and character wise yes but Claude Frollo is the worst father but has got a great character and a great movie and the fact he’s just a a hole to Quasie and a ped towards Esmerelda

It feels like it wants to focus on pushing “ *The Message* ” rather than telling a story instead of telling on how “diverse” the movie is that will make “conservatives Sh*t their pants” after seeing it. As if the Message even matters when money comes into the room.

I barely saw any promotion for this movie…. this feels like what happened with Treasure Planet…. Only it seems this movie may not have been as good… granted I haven’t seen it yet, but maybe.

To be fair; I knew the twist of the film instantly by the creature design... so the twist wasn't that much of a twist for me.

Honestly, I feel like a lot of the movie’s problems could be fixed with the addition of an actual villain, not just the pando. Maybe it could be that, instead of just going down into the strange world and staying there just because, Jaeger Clade went down with a partner who, upon discovering pando, backstabbed Jaeger and left him to die down there and stole his only means of escape. Then, upon returning to the surface, the guy pulls some sob story about how Jaeger gave his life for him down there and helped to discover pando, then taking advantage of it like how we see in the movie. Then years later, when Searcher is an adult and farms pando, there’s the same part in the movie about the pando shortage, alongside frequent, violent earthquakes, which causes both the president and the villain, who’s not known to be a villain just yet, to head down there to not only save their energy source, but also figure out the cause of the earthquakes. Once down in the strange world, an earthquake separates everyone and Searcher eventually finds his father towards the end, who reveals that the villain is the one that trapped him down there. Jaeger then shows the family the heart and they learn that Avalonia is a giant creature and not a continent, with the earthquakes being the result of pando killing it. They then rush back to tell the president, but when the villain finds out, he tries to kill them in order to keep exploiting the pando regardless of how much harm its doing the giant turtle. Yeah, I know it would be another twist villain, but I honestly think it could work well with the story.

Both Strange World (2022) and Treasure Planet (2002) came out while in their Thanksgiving Opening weekends respectively 20 years ago in a row and commercially bombed BIG TIME. Not even counting 2 decades from the past to present. Iger’s back as CEO and this couldn’t get any worse. But anyways I’ll check it out. Morph and Splat are closely resemble and make toys out of them. The dog too big cuteness.

The problem is that representation has become bad. It's been so forced, so ham-fisted, so blunt, and so obnoxious that even if it is well-intentioned, it's enough to ruin the experience for most people. And that is why Disney should stop attempting to represent groups they can't handle. They're not subtle. It's like having a black Black ranger and a yellow Asian ranger, like in the first season (or so) of Power Rangers. Well-meaning, but really not being very effective at it.

I personally thought this movie was decent, but I understand your issues with it. Ethan's character arc was one of the strongest points for me since I like how they explored his struggles in finding his own path in life, as well as using his interest in environmental science to reveal that big twist. I also thought said twist worked okay in finding common ground between him, his dad and his grandfather. And while there were some pacing issues in the beginning, I thought the journey through the titular strange world was still interesting, especially for its color palette, bizarre creature designs, and that big reveal. That said, I also found the non-Clade explorers to be forgettable, the humor was mostly dull, and there could've been more time showcasing Searcher's rise in success. And while I liked the overall animation, I agree that it would've been awesome if they used that comic filter aesthetic throughout the movie. I'm getting tired of the usual semi-realistic CGI textures and would love to see more 2D visuals. Speaking of which, Disney's next animated film "Wish" is said to include some 2D elements in it, though it might be similar to how the "Paperman" short was done (2D drawings on top of CGI animation). And while I doubt you'd be interested in "Disenchanted," that film had a few hand-drawn animated scenes, so at least there's some 2D in a recent Disney film.

It's sad that people are only focusing on the gay message of the movie. If you look up "strange world" on youtube pretty much all you'll get is "woke media is bad! Disneys went crazy! Don't let your kids watch it!" it's gross and people need to get over themselves

Its really disappointing that more animated (or cg) Disney movies keeps turning out ok or simply plain old bad and boring, I remember being so sick of all these live action remakes that I was anticipating for Raya, which didn't meet my expectation for a Disney animated film but I was happy nevertheless because at least we got something animated. Enchanto blew it out of the park, Disney movies does best when its a Disney movie (songs, fun animation, and lovable characters within a good story) I was super excited for this movie as well, but I'm I watched your review before wasting any money.

Wait, they used shell shading in this film, a full blown disney animated film to avoid 2d while in the new disenchanted movie that came out around the same time got a 2d segment in it?

I’m actually looking forward to see this movie soon. I’m a huge fan of classic Sci-Fi/Adventure stories like Jules Verne works and i really like the 3D CGI Animation art style here. It looks very colorful, expressive and nice. Shame that it might bomb tho because Disney barely did any marketing for this one. I think this might be this generation’s Treasure Planet and Atlantis.

When I heard Dennis Quaid, Sir Bowen of DragonHeart, was gonna be in this film, I really got excited for it, but after what you said about his character, I don't think I'll give the movie a chance.

I had some expectations to see this but deep down, I knew they wouldn't last. The outcomes I was going to get from this movie was exactly what I figured you were going to say. Nothing special, just something that's below average and just ok at best. Honestly, I'm more excited to see Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Those movies look hella more impressive than Strange World. Also, the marketing for those movies are off the charts!

It's worse than a bad movie. At least you can laugh at a bad or stupid movie, a so-called guilty pleasure. But this movie is just such a bore. I saw quite a lot of trailers and every single one of them didn't grab me. - Generic lines that can be from any adventure movie ever. ''I've never seen anything like it!'' ''Didn't see that coming!'' ''We are way over our heads.'' - The ''so random'' humor is just stale and overused. - Character A says something hopeful, inspiring, or reassuring. Character B asks ''Really?'' and character A answers ''No.'' - Somebody dying is treated as a joke, so now I don't care whether anybody leaves or dies, and any scene trying to do an emotional fake or real death scene will be hollow. Even though the animation is great the design of the characters, creatures, and the world are just so boring and lack any detail. These creatures are just blobs and simple shapes. It would've looked better in 2D. Also, the environmental message this movie presents is suicidal. Let's stop using our only energy source which our whole economy is based on (or a huge chunk of it is) without any alternatives in sight. It was written by an idiot before the inflation.

I made a choice to not support Disney after canceling The Owl House. They should do what Sony did with Spider Verse or Dreamworks with Puss in Boots 2.

Its strange how this film turned out so bad.

I just want to point out how terrible the character designs are in this film. None of the characters have something that helps them stand out, and instead they look like they could come from any animation company, like Sony. In old Disney films the character designs had purpose and fun stylistic choices, such as in Aladdin, where all the principle characters were based on different shapes. The muted colours on all the characters and a lack of any distinct outfit or accessory makes them so bland and like they blend in with the background.

Spoilers to anyone who wants to see it Not to be that person, but I bet y’all if Searcher was a female character the dad abandoning for 25 years would most likely have been taken a lot more seriously…

Reasons the film failed in the box office: 1.) Lazy writing, boring characters and paint by numbers story 2.) Minimal to no marketing 3.) Bigots hate the gay stuff because they hate gay stuff 4.) Queer community and allies hate the gay stuff because it was so empty and artificial and (Michael Palin impression) dull dull dull DULL DULL 5.) Too reminiscent of Lightyear, which was released relatively recently

Yeah I didn’t particularly care for the movie either. The best part about it for me were the environments of the Strange World itself, everything else was pretty much been there, done that. The story, especially with the twist near the end (thankfully not a twist villain at least), is something we've seen a million times in other films and TV shows with eco-friendly themes. Not that I'm against environmental messages (I drive a hybrid after all), but this just came off as obnoxiously "Captain Planet"-esque for my taste and feels very artificial. The animation style is getting pretty humdrum and stale these days, when more and more movies since Into The Spiderverse have come out demonstrating what can be done with the art form in new, exciting ways this just looks like a movie that could've come out like ten years ago (to be fair I heard their upcoming movie Wish next year is going to be more experimental with its animation which sounds promising). The character designs were hopelessly bland and dull and the grandfather-father-son dynamic was not well handled, some of the things they say to one another were really hurtful but they resolve their conflict at the end without patching up some of those gaping wounds, there should have been some sort of coming to terms with that instead of just brushing that aside and being like "we're cool now." And the elephant in the room, the youngest son being gay, there was no point to that at all in the story. There could have been an opportunity for some conflict between the grandfather and grandson when he brings up the fact that he's gay but the grandpa is totally okay with it so why should we care if you're going to make it such a big selling point to the movie from what little marketing you've given it? It's not that I'm coming from a place of "bigotry" or anything, it's just that if you're going to emphasize the fact that a gay character is in your movie then take advantage of what you can do with that character in service of the story instead of trying to score some cheap brownie points with the IdPol crowd. If the whole point is that he's gay and everyone accepts him for who he is then stop making a big deal out of it. Anyway, it's a strange movie for sure.

Good concept, but super poor execution, I was hoping this movie was gonna have a kid friendly version of something similar to the video game “The Outer Worlds” or older sci-fi stuff full of imagination and creativity, this movie had so much potential…but noooo, Disney just focused on their woke agenda and gave us a horrible story, and the characters are annoying and not relatable or like-able. This film will never hold a candle to anything, I’d rather watch Home On the Range, this film makes that one look like a masterpiece. To compare this with Treasure Planet or Atlantis: The Lost Empire is insulting to those masterpieces

I didn't even realize this came out. Normally I'm on top of new disney movies release dates but I saw a few trailers that looked mid and was like *Oh yeah that movie's coming out soon* even though it's been out for weeks apparently.

I liked Big hero 6, but at the same time, I felt it was lacking something.

See, I saw this coming from the very first trailer. I’m an artist, and a huge Disney and Pixar nerd who’s been studying their films for about as long as I could talk, and the first major red flag to me was the design of the world. It has no other identity other than: blob. Colourful. Weird. Oooooh. Designs like these just lazy and bland and it doesn’t make me want to know more, it makes me want to go watch something else. Like, Lilo and Stitch, or Treasure Planet, or Atlantis, or Tarzan, or basically anything else, because anything else is almost guaranteed to have a world that is more fleshed out and interesting and actually based off a real idea, and not just the word “strange.”

Remember: more original animated films and less live-action remakes

Strange World is so forgettable I was able to forget everyone's names. But it's not really "bad", just ok. Not exactly a Disney classic, but at least better than the other slop Disney has come out with these past few years.

A recent Family Guy episode did the abondon father better where cowboy mayor West's father left his family so that his son doesnt end up an outlaw like him and his fathers before them .
