Strasburg Rail Road's #475 gets ready for a busy day. It takes a few hours to ready the locomotive. I hope the duration will be appreciated even though I condensed this time to under 15 minutes. I also show some other activity as the day begins. I was told 475 was originally equipped with a Stephenson Valve Gear and was converted to Baker Valve Gear sometime in history. Engine 475 appeared in the movie "Thomas and the Magic Rail Road".
Strasburg Rail Road, www.strasburgrailroad.com/index.php, is the oldest continuously operating short line in the country. It was chartered in 1832. They may be the only RR in the country still pulling revenue freight with steam. I was fortunate to have grown up near by. The Strasburg RR is one of the most capable shops in the country for steam locomotives. Locomotives from across the USA come here to be serviced. They offer a Shop Tour. #90, Strasburg RR's largest steam locomotive was being serviced at the time of my visit. They have five operating steam locomotives.

These are not machines. They are a work of art that breathes

Thank you! It means a lot to have such a positive response from you. This is the engine that inspired me to study and build the baker in Legos. During that process I chose to build Walschaert first. So I guess it inspired both. It was nice to revisit this destination of countless bike rides from my teen years and early 20's.

Thanks. What you see in the video took place between 0600 and 1000. The first train was only scheduled to leave at 1100 that day.

Indirect baker valve gear is quite a cool thing to watch and a rare thing at that.

For how long do they have to ring the bell when manoeuvring? Is it just within the yard?

Why wasn’t Baker valve gear more widely used if is was more efficient than other types ???

I am not an expert on this, but I think there was debate over whether Baker or other types were most efficient. I believe one of the main reasons for converting to Baker was the elimination of sliding link joints present on the Walschaerts or Heusinger gear. Baker uses pins which were supposed to be more reliable and replacements could easily be stored.
