Why would the EU want to take responsibility for the ASEAN region. It is for Asians to take responsibility of the ASEAN region. Would Ms Van de Lyen like Asians to take responsibility over Europe.
That’s exactly what China president Xi said that Asian should be taken care of Asian and only the big brother’s word is counted and to be obeyed. No Asean country will accept that for economical and strategic reasons. Inter world relationship is more important than close door ASEAN. It will bring us back to undeveloped backwards looking.
Mr Taufik started with the correct perspective of forcing ASEAN to choose , unlike Lyn Kuok expecting ASEAN to choose ...lol that is the nuance between business pragmatism n academic ignorance !!
Madam Kamdani. Has given a good n polite narrativees on geopolitical hegemony..unlik the dogmatism n one track mindedness of Kuok .that contradict herself between freedom of choice n being perceived as dilly dally while the Cambodian premier spoke eloguen ly about sovereign rights to choose..to sum up beautifully
May I ask Lynn Kouk, what is Rule Based order? American terms or Western out of the blue rules? Or NATO rules? AUKUS or QUAD ? New order must be multilateral, peaceful and respect to each others.
If she means rule of International law, then say so. "Rules based order" is a favourite American phrase which means American rules of the game - this does not mean international law. We have heard endless times this phrase uttered by American political figures whenever they talk of THEIR role in a rules based order. We all know it is american rules which change as and when it suits America. Asean's interests are best served by being neutral. In fact Asean could show the world the meaning of non alignment - that it can really bring about great economic development and social/political progress.
Jai Hinduja. 5Eyes Hyper-imperialism make Rules for others to Obey in their interests but as and when it becomes not in their interests will break or obliterate their own same Rules.
In my opinion, the sequence of inviting who to speak first is not so right. PM Hun Sen, as the most senior person should be given the opportunity to speak first (also not gave him enough time as commented by PM Hun Sen) Also, the moderator did not do a good job in managing time allocated to each speaker. He appears to favour certain panel speaker...
Also why Prof Kishore Mahbubani was not invited as a panel speaker? He would hv been a better choice given his wisdom & experience, better than a younger academic who gave a relatively western mainstream view...
Lynn Kouk's rationale is shadow and lack of depth. She is very much influenced by western political narratives and lacks an understanding of Asean narratives. Totally out of context.
Agree with Mdm Shinta wrt the issues on sanctions... livelihoods on the ground are most affected, those who benefited from the high prices are the least deserving.
A bit disrespectful to put Hun Sen last and made him worry about available time allocated for him. He's one of those Asean authoritarian rulers and constantly on the receiving ends of many ridicules from the West, but he's one of the eldest, he has experienced and seen Asean more than most, and being a chair of Asean as a poor country during the pandemic + Ukraine invasion which affect the global energy/food trade + the myanmar crisis + increasingly tense situation in the SCS and ECS etc spare a thought for this old fella.
But we need to disregard that history, without which many of the S.E.Asian countries would have retained its backwardness of barter trading. China was already trading with these and had sunk seeds of future influence by the past Chinese Emperors who used to offer their princesses to marry Rulers, Kings and Sultans of these nations. Ethnic planting has proven a powerful tool of entrenchment for future prosterrity.
China influence still much much much better than the west unilateral must win-lose mentality, use military force and distruption to other country political. system. Backward? Haven't you sleep enough?
I would -Love for: there, to be: "as much - Investment, into: the [very] Asian Continent (ASIA): (Especially; India [in_-particular];) as possABLE!!"!!
Also too: what if CENTRAL Asia: could - "host/hold": "an Asian_Union/ALLIANCE ("A.A. =Asian_Alliance")" **a "Union": from/through/via: which; (say); to: [alas]: "Unite together; the [very]_Asian_ continent!!"?? -M.K.S. Asia, can!!-(M.K.S.).

US-China trade volume forms the bulk of supply chain and the ' rest' of the world seems to have a fragment or share in this. How does Asean see itself in this trade given the economic upheaval created by global supply chain in countries which have their own economic priorities, least of them being energy. Do bilateral agreements work better than multilateral agreements in present world from a historical perspective. How do e commerce, internet laws, piracy play a role in Asean' outlook in a multipolar world. Most of Asean' priorities are those of developing countries vis a vis those of a developed or westernised world. How does the energy sector, be it fossil fuel or renewable of these countries play a role in shaping Asean' outlook be it in Asia, Asia Pacific, or across the globe.
Great insight to know how ASEAN eyes and to implement energy transition at regional. Every country may have different situation but we have to reach one goal, better earth on the future.
I'm quite glad someone is breaking the echo chamber of 'Asean doesn't want to choose' nonsense of a position. Such a blanket position just serves as a convenient excuse for each leader to not deliver real organic development for their nations by relying on external handouts, trying to play the 'two sides.' It also takes the current state of security for granted, upon which the economic development achievements to date has occurred and to which each nation has under-contributed to date. The 'Free and open Indopacific' ideal benefits your region directly more than anyone else yet so preoccupied with cutting off the nose to spite the face whenever a new initiative launches..
Obviously your free and open indopacific idea has no understanding on Asean cultures development. ASEAN has 600 millions people with all sort of ethic group, religion, different idealogy politically, colonised by the west before but we never had a war since ASEAN was form. If not of the non-interference policy, how the hack u think we survive so long? Western openness and freedom is a hoax from the elites to gain economy benefits. That's bullshit! The moment you enforce your thinking to developing country, the free and openness idea is already a joke. Freedom in ASEAN means good education, food on the table, security. Freedom in West is like 18 years old boys killing people in Texas.
