How do you design and manage wargames to train senior military leaders and inform real-world planning and decisions? Join in on a conversation with the Director of the Army War College’s Department of Strategic Wargaming, COL Chad Jagmin, and Mr. Mark Leno, wargame analyst and designer, as they provide an overview of professional wargaming and give a behind the scenes look at several unique war and strategy games. The Army War College’s approach to strategic wargaming includes interdisciplinary teams of strategists, operations research analysts, modeling and simulation specialists, and intelligence analysts.

COL Chad Jagmin, Director, DSW , Center for Strategic Leadership
Originally from Trenton, Michigan, Colonel Jagmin serves in the Center for Strategic Leadership at the United States Army War College. He received his commission as an officer in the Corps of Engineers from the United States Military Academy in 1994. He is a graduate of the Airborne School, Air Assault School, Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Services and Staff School, Command and General Staff College, and the Eisenhower School at National Defense University.
His first ten years of service, Colonel Jagmin served in the Corps of Engineers as a platoon leader, company commander, staff officer at the battalion and brigade level and finally as instructor at the United States Military Academy. For the past 15 years, Colonel Jagmin served as an operations research systems analyst (ORSA). Prior to his arrival at Carlisle Barracks, he was assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Cost Assessment Program Evaluation, where he served as the Senior Military Analyst for Land Forces Division. Previously, he served as an ORSA for the Center for Army Analysis, the Army Office of Business Transformation, the United States Army War College, 10th Mountain Division (Light) (Infantry), and the United States Military Academy. His operational and deployed experience includes Bangladesh, Federated States of Micronesia (Kosrae), Iraq, Djibouti and Afghanistan.
Colonel Jagmin holds a Master of Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology, a Master of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering - Thermal Fluid Sciences) from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, and a Master of National Resource Strategy from the Eisenhower School at the National Defense University. His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Iraq and Afghanistan Campaign Medals, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, NATO (ISAF) Medal, the Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
Mark Leno, U.S. Army War College, Center for Strategic Leadership
Mark Leno is a U.S. Army civilian wargame analyst currently assigned to the Department of Strategic Wargaming (DSW). His primary duties are teaching wargaming and designing and facilitating manual and computer-assisted wargames and exercises. He is trained through the U.S. Army as an operations research systems analyst and strategist and is a former Presidential Management Fellow (PMF). He has deployed twice and completed several overseas projects. He has a master of arts with honors in international relations (concentration in international security) from the University of Chicago, master's certificate in business intelligence from Villanova University, and bachelor of arts (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) in political science with minor in history from Gettysburg College.
