Mr. Bennett gets a lot of sympathy, but I think he buried his head in the sand regarding his family. Of course Mrs. Bennett had anxiety!! She is the only one trying to fix the family situation. She is right, unless her daughters married reasonably well, they could end up in a dire condition later on...Mrs. Bennett, I think was a fierce momma!!

@Luxe Lady I agree. She made some mistakes, but she knew the seriousness of the situation in society! And making fun of your wife in front of her children, as Mr. B did often, is a low blow. I think he is not just a lovable old fool...passive aggressive!

Part if it is her fault though. She neglected their education so they cannot get jobs as teachers or governesses or companions. And she wanted as many servants as possible, which meant they had little money for a dowry to to take the girls to London to be seen by young men. And she is a blatant social climber like Miss Bingley- neither being from gentry. Nor does she care for the happiness of her children. But he has opted out as a husband and parent, thinking it to be too hard to put his foot down when it matters. But he does care for his children's happiness.

I agree with you. I love this series but Mr Bennet comes across as a sweet, funny father but in the book he doesn't. At least that was not the impression it gave to me. In the 80s version of Mr and Mrs Bennet the portrayal is more accurate I think, although Mrs Bennet is maybe top smart.

@@onemercilessming1342 One main thing I didn’t like about that adaptation was them portraying Mr and Mrs Bennett as being in love. Their marriage was a complete failure. Mr Bennett married his wife after a brief courtship based on only a physical attraction, without taking the time to get to know her silly and selfish character. Jane Austen uses them to highlight the importance of personality rather than lust when choosing a spouse.

Yes, indeed, Mr. Bennett deserves Darcy's criticism of his lapses from propriety - like the shaming of Mary - one of Jane Austen's priorities for couples and families is "promoting respectability" which includes smoothing over faults in public, not showing them up.

I think that's the problem with the otherwise very entertaining portrayals of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet in this series. She's often so ridiculous that it is hard to take her very valid worries about her daughters' prospects seriously. And he's so likeable, it's easy to miss his indolence and negligence where their futures are concerned.

@@lizziebkennedy7505 Actually he could have done a lot about the entail. Entails were legally broken all the time in the regency era. I spent a lot of time studying this and while it would have been some expense and a lot of effort the details of the entail that we know of in the books would have made it eligible to be broken by standard practice if he only did the leg work to explore such options (ignorance of the law was the primary reason entails were not broken at this time). He was also could have done a lot more to increase their dowries and did nothing. He was rather neglectful.

Is Mrs. bennet's name Fanny? Did I hear right? I'd never realised that before. How curious that Austen would name two shrewish whining women Fanny in older novels (I mean also Fanny Dashwood in S&S), then write a Heroine like Fanny Price (who is their opposite in every way) for Mansfield Park later in life.
@EmoBearRights
@EmoBearRights 3 года назад
She doesn't have a first name in the book but as someone has pointed out since the oldest girls in the Mansfield Park families are named after their mothers (presumably the convention that the time) she's probably called Jane but that would have been too confusing to have Mr Gardiner address her as Jane. Also Lady Catherine possibly because she uses her first name in her formal title names her daughter after her sister and not herself.
@lizziebkennedy7505
@lizziebkennedy7505 3 года назад
Yes, really important point, because it's not the name a gentleman's daughter has at that time. Fanny Dashwood is an excellent example of a family trying to climb, hence the pressure on Edward, but not knowing enough to choose a different name for their daughter.

Mrs. Bennett from 2005 was more tolerable as a person, but I think less true to the books.
