I wired the middle pickup RW/RP. I did this on purpose as I like the out of phase tonal range it offers. Thanks for your comment and thanks for checking out the vids!

The pickups are out of phase that’s why on the in between positions
@duroxkilo
@duroxkilo 4 года назад
@@elams1894 i may be wrong, pls correct me if that's the case :} i think a true out of phase setup can be used on double pickups (visualize a P Bass) where each pickup gets energized by separate sets of strings. if the same string(s) were to energize 2 pickups that are out of phase, the total resulting current would be a differential (partial cancellation) between the current of each pickup, meaning a weak current/signal. a RW/RP setup is different.. the magnets of one of the two pickups are out of phase indeed, but so is the wingding (or same winding but wired in reverse), producing an in phase current relative to the other pickup.. like taking a picture of an upside-down object holding the camera upside-down, thus resulting in a picture of 'proper' orientation. *that's a magnificent instrument... thanks for sharing
@elams1894
@elams1894 4 года назад
@@duroxkilo hi Durox, you are dead right, a reverse wound, reverse polarity single coil gives you a pickup that is out of phase with the other pickups. You can mess about with the humbucker a bit, as it has two coils, however it is the RW,RP single coil that can give you versatility. Thanks heaps for kind words, really appreciate it!

@Boony Tooty Actually Leo Fender treid at leasst twelve other pickups before deciding on the one that they used for the final guitar. It pays to know what you're talking about! He used Bill Carson as the guinea pig for most of the build as far as sound and palability - othe guitarists would add to it what they either like, or didn't like about it unitl the finished product that you see today.

That was an absolute JOY to have watched. The attention to detail and the love that you put into that Strat was for me, the true Art that you possess. I have played for over thirty years and I have never seen anything like this video series. Everything was cool up until you wound your own pups...My God, that was incredible. The carbon fiber P/G and all of the details. The hand drill. All of the homemade jigs. That was an incredible build. What else could be said?

Well please enlighten us all. What did he do wrong? To say it sounded like crap you must have an idea. The middle pickup is wired out of phase and it is done on purpose. It wasn't spectacular playing and pretty basic but considering the sound is being put through an amp, then a camcorder, then going through a youtube encoding and finally ending in your headphones, in an room with ambient noise I would venture to say your probably not hearing what it truly sounds like. Oh and here is a proper demo ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pNCoKpAOx-Q.html Go ahead argue with the sound of it now.

@jjohnson9009
@jjohnson9009 8 лет назад
Well, I'm pretty sure that's as good as you're going to get so I wouldn't hold my breath. All I can say is aesthetics don't often contribute to tone. You put this guitar in the hands of an amazing player in a top studio under ideal conditions and I'm betting that bridge pickup still sounds like a tin can with shit all over it.

Yeah, that super strat just doesn't do it for me. I've grown partial to a few different styles of strats and it just doesn't resemble what my ears are used to I guess. When you see it up against that Les Paul style you really see what it lacks in sustain as well.
@elams1894
@elams1894 8 лет назад
That LP is one piece of mahogany and it has ridiculous volume as you can hear in the vid. Probably the one piece construction is the difference in sustain rather than pups but certainly the humbucker in the strat is not doing what I was hoping it to do. The single coils to my ears are nice though. No worries dude, thanks for commenting!!

This was a great series. I liked that you used very common tools and made every aspect of the guitar down to the selector switch knob. I also liked that you showed the neck pocket mistake. It's cool to see that and how you fixed it and carried on to build a beautiful guitar. One question, how do you know how much winding to put on your pick ups? What's normal amount and how much more winding makes them "hotter?"
@elams1894
@elams1894 7 лет назад
Thanks GD! Thats a good question as it can vary greatly for as yet unknown reasons. As a general rule 42awg wire is good for single coils, mostly neck and middle. 5000 - 6000 turns will give you that warm open tone. 43awg wire is a tad thinner and will enable you to get more wire on the bobbin, more turns, giving you more resistance and a more compressed tone, good for a bit more perceived treble. Hence I use 43awg almost exclusively in the bridge position. I have got as high as 10k resistance on a single bridge pickup bobbin, filling up the bobbin to capacity, but normally I get about 8k 43awg onto a single coil bridge. Humbuckers with two bobbins I normally shoot for about 15-16k in the bridge 43awg, and neck around 10k 42awg. Alnico 2 magnets are nice for neck and middle and alnico 5,8,9 and ceramic good for bridge. My ultimate bridge humbucker is 15k with alnico 8, very nice. Things can change alot though as my hottest sounding bridge humbucker is only 7.5k total 42awg with alnico 2. I cant for the life of me work out why. Thats voodoo science for you i guess, but good to experiment. Cheers!

fabulous luthier skills - a piece of art as much as a musical instrument - tone has clarity and body - I think though you have to be young to like the colour but then I'm stuck in my ways I guess - natural, black on white or white on black,,, a good sunburst at a pinch. How much do you charge for one of these?

Thanks LG. I wanted to make it blue, truth be told, however it came out greenish-teal which I quite like. The placement of the kiwi logo is because a big hole (grain inclusion) appeared in the headstock and it looked pretty rough so I covered it with the paua shell. It was a shame that it ended up near the tuning post but I like it as there is always some thing random that happens in guitar building..always. I don't get angry about it now, just make it a feature and I get over it. Thanks again!

Years ago I began building a guitar based on my own custom design, I had read through several books and had a good idea of what I have to do. But after several weeks of work I shelved the idea and found a guitar I liked off the rack. Point being, everyone who is thinking about building their own should watch your video series and get a grip on just how much work is involved in building the guitar from scratch. Its literally a mountain of work.

This is why custom guitars are so freaking expensive. That is a LOT of hours from an expert. Amazing job! I envy your skills and your patience.

Superb ceaftsmanship. I to build guitars but I really only assemble them. I do my own inlay work, wiring and fret work ect.... I applaude your work. It is indeed fine craftsmanship. I would rewire your middle pickups and reverse the phase. It will give you a great tone. It's really cancelling too many frequencies and doesn'tz sound good. Reverse it then put as much diligent time in practicing as you do building and you'll excell quite fast. Thank you for the no nonsense strait forward guitar build. I'd rate your skills and end product as good if not better than a $2000.00 custom shop Fender indeed. I was really impressed when I saw you making a schellac ball and french polishing your body and neck. That's becoming a lost art but gives you a hand applied high gloss shine you can't easily attain even using a professional spray booth and filtered air. Superb hard work man.
