Quite possibly the coolest club of the 1980's! "Footage from a California new wave synthpop club is mesmerizing and awesome" - Dangerous Minds.

Isabella Ibarra at the Southeast Career Technical Academy deserves full credit for an excellent compilation she put together featuring the patrons of the Stratus Dance Club in the San Diego area (actually Spring Valley) in 1986 and 1987. The clips were quite chopped and muddled so I set them to the music playing in the club, updating the video and replacing the audio in the process.
This was East County, and Stratus was a club that catered heavily to the new romantic and goth crowds-these videos are all labeled “The Metro Beat and Club Sanctuary Nights” which was an 18-21 event and a regular rendezvous for the new wavers in the area. Jane’s Addiction actually played Stratus right during this period, in the spring of 1987.
The clips start us off with the Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary,” there’s a good deal of Divine (both “Shake It Up” and “Native Love (Step by Step)”) and Sexual Harassment (”I Need a Freak”) and Strawberry Switchblade’s version of “Jolene” and Trans-X (”Living on Video”) alongside more enduring faves.

Just amazing! My daughter was shocked to see pictures of me wearing black eyeliner, lipstick, paisley shirts, dark blazers, brooches, black pants, and pointy nana shoes. I was a club hound. Now, I wear suites and ties, and own an attorney service. I miss those days. The 80's were the best time to be young.

They were genuinely happier. People in the 80s actually lived and had a great fucking time. I wish I could have experienced these times. I hate how life is today. Too much technology and people can’t even live in the moment like these people did

As a 24 year old, it is. My dad is apart of y’all’s generation and growing up he exposed me to sooo many things of the 80s (thank god) so much that when I went to high school I had no problem dressing how I wanted and didn’t care what others thought about me 😂 yall were a great generation!!

You guys should do Nostalgia Night, it's a holliday in my country on the night before independence day (so you don't have to go to work the next day). All night clubs do a 70s, 80s, or 90s theme night and most don't let people under 40/50/60 in, so at least once a year peole can meet with their old school friends and go party like you're in their 20s again without feeling akward about running into people your kid's age. Even some people in their 80s who started the tradition in the late 70s keep going to 60s parties

Yep '83 grad as well. No way to convey how different it felt to be alive and young then. Best decade ever and just like that, in a blink of the eye, it was over and will never happen again. No way. Things weren't perfect but they were better.

Wonderful footage. What strikes me is that everyone is at their peak here. They would never lookor feel any better. My time was about a decade later and there's often a temptation to look back and cringe at how you looked back then. I don't think these people need worry about that. They look fabulous.

She was 25 and she had to babysit my azz lol. She dropped me off at the neighbors house instead and went to Stratus club. I wasn’t mad lol , cuz I had Zelda

For those that don’t know, Stratus was an under 21 club, along with Distillery they were some of our favorites. If you travelled south of the boarder, we went to Tequlia Sunrise on Wednesday nights. By 86-87 all of these kids would have been two to three years younger than our crowd. We had progressed to 21+ clubs, Emerald City, Manikin, Piranha Room. These peeps are my peeps though, we danced the night away every chance we got! Love the video!

We were. Not as much junk food, no internet (so we COULDN'T be occupied by that), walked and rode bikes wherever we wanted to go, cooked healthier foods, and we did alot more physical activities. Alot easier to be fit back then.

I was a Mobile D.J. during this same very era (not at the Stratus Club in San Diego however, but at venues in the Los Angeles areas) and young people out on the dance floors wanted to BE & LOOK their VERY BEST; that was so SUPER important to them. Indeed, perhaps a number of them took it to extremes, like in any society or in any era, but your observations are CORRECT; in the 1980s, particularly in the latter part of that decade, the guys were lean & slick and the gals were the prettiest ever; both in dress, hair & cosmetics. Call me A 62 YEAR OLD FART, but THAT'S the way it was back then during that unique time; I WAS there...I SAW it, and those 17/18 year olds in this here Stratus Dance Club video...which are about 54/55 today (here in 2024) I reckon would totally agree, without doubt...without reservation nor hesitation. This footage looks great and so clean for its age. I would’ve been 16/17 at this time, but wasn’t able to go to clubs yet. Got my dancing in at all the concerts I went to instead. But this is so fun to watch and remember how many different styles there were.

I was 17 years old then and it was brilliant times. I use to dress like boy George. I went out with no make on and put make on in a friends house. Parents would go mad if they saw me like that. After the night was over, take all the make off and go home. I had a boyfriend who wore eyeliner my dad banned him from the house 😅

I was born in 1967 and lived that era. I listened and danced to techno, house, goth, and industrial music, got asymmetrical haircuts with long bangs, pierced my ear, wore eyeliner to be edgy, and shopped at the mall in places like Chess King and The County Seat so I could look rad. Big shirts and bolo ties were a thing! Good times!

Loved the 80's while I was in it and missed it terribly when it turned to the 90's, but as time has passed, the memories are more bitter than sweet. I have found this feeling to be strange and surprising. I am quite accepting of it though and feel relief.♥

I'm a guy from a slightly younger generation. You saw what happened when the girls weren't being harassed - everyone was having a blast! The girls were enjoying themselves, boys were having a good time, and the whole club was buzzing with fun. It was a pretty typical scene whenever we went out. It really helped us grow as a generation. But the key thing was, going out was all about letting loose. BTW did you notice how many people were glued to their phones? Dancing helped us find ourselves.

Graduated in 87, it was the best decade of my life! I don't recall the hate we see today, cancel culture, wokeism, pronouns, political hate and division amongst teens, school shootings, etc. All we cared about was finding the next house party and we had fun!

Freedom of expression was a big thing back then, it seems that people prefer to look the same and not stand out from the bland crowd for fear of being ridiculed. Video phones and social media has made people wary of epressing themselves like this.

This place was only a few miles from where I lived, but yet we still preferred to head down to Tijuana to the Clubs down there. I am Class of '86 and currently 53 years of age.

@@justthatgirl-ct4jo Yes & yes... at 16 year old you can work, pay full taxes, buy/rent a house, get married, have children... But you cannot vote or drink alcohol until you are 18.

Absolutely spectacular not too many film cameras in clubs no mobiles. Everyone had a unique style. Girls and Boys were free to express individual style. O.k it was tough economically in the early to mid eighties but clubs where the release. I dates the most way out girls at the time.

80s were great in my life too! I missed out on the disco 70's, was too young, but that sure looked like fun in it's own way. I can only imagine what the 1960's were like. Everyone I met from them, whether they were a true Hippie or not, seems to have mostly rich, positive memories, unless stuck in Vietnam. 1990's were actually pretty positive to me, economy seemed to be good for almost everyone. Things have slowly turned to shit since the early 2000s, if you ask me. In almost every way. Even the "big economic growth, jobs" of 2022 seems only slightly better than recent years, and nowhere near the good feelings of years gone by.

I remember meeting the guy who started that place when we were at the Carl's Jr, I think, and he was trying to encourage us to go there. He said it was a dance club for teens (18+) and that we were just the right age and we would have a good time even though there was no alcohol there. He must have been about 40 years old, and I thought it was kinda odd of him to go scouting for patrons for his new place like that. It was an odd vibe I got for sure, and never went there, but some of my friends did. Now I kinda wish I had gone.

I just realized something major about dancing back then, people did it for themselves, for the pure enjoyment of it all, with the camera present they all seem shy and hesitant.

This was the best time ever to live young! I exploited every second of it. Lol lol! Kids today have no idea. I remember one hot night in the college town of Bowling Green Ohio. It was alternative night at a club called uptown. Because the bar was upstairs. It was a small dance floor and the heat that the evening was oppressive. They used to sell dollar pictures of beer. And those of us who were hard-core didn’t bother with a cup. Lol! By accident, one punk ran into another new waiver and a picture of beer hit the floor. And then randomly someone slipped in it. And then someone saw an opportunity.the next thing you knew, everyone was pouring their pictures of beer on the dance floor and created a giant dancing/slip and slide skating rink. To the soundtrack of the 80s! Such a awesome time!

SoCal in 80s! The music, fashion and style, clubs, cars (yes, we actually preferred cars to Tech except for the stereo and speakers) and the concerts. Even then I knew how good we had it. Now, I'm even more convinced. I thought when I'd reach my current age, I would be longing to be young again. But actually, I long to be young back in the 80s again. I would hate to be a young person nowadays....

I just turned 60 and the 80s were the best time of my life. Grauduated, served in the Navy, became a Deputy Sheriff, and brought my first house at 24. However most of all I married my beautiful wife and we're going on 36 years of marriage. Along the way we also raised 5 kids. I partied at the clubs, but worked my @$$ off. Our generation had style and class, and weren't overweight pierced tattooed snow flakes, living at home until their late 30s. We were aware what was going on around the world but didn't worry about COVID and wearing a mask, watching what you said or being cancelled, we spoke our minds. We took risks and looking back we had a sence of accomplishments and pride. Most of all we knew what a man and a women was.

Blimey, there's 10+ years of style, fashion & trends all in one place. What a fantastic place that was, where people could be who they wanted to be. The 80s was a great decade. Not a tattoo in sight, no fake lips, b.oobs or @rse. Everybody looking natural, despite all the different make-up and hair trends. I remember those times very well. I had a jolly good time back in the 80s! Wish I could go back. Fascinating.

Clubbing in the 80's, I remember a sense of freedom where everyone basically did their own thing & no pretensions. Good times ! ( except maybe going home early morning and clothes and hair reeking of cigarette smoke !)
