Are you limited on space in your yard? Are you unable to build raised beds? Do you need a temporary garden space? Straw bales might be the answer to your gardening needs.
We used straw bales the first year we gardened here and they were great! Let me show you how to condition and then plant in your bales.
Items used to condition and plant...
Blood meal
Bone meal
Organic compost
Plants from a nursery near me
Let me know if you try this and how it works out! Or...if you have ever planted in straw bales yourself.
Blessings,
Penny

Two things I should’ve covered. 1…You definitely leave the bailing twine/wire on the bale. The wire will be on the side of your straw bale. 2… you probably don’t want to put any perennials, like herbs, in your straw bales because the bales will break down and you will have to rehome your perennials.

This is very inspiring to me. Fifty years ago I put eyed potato pieces under 'flakes' of straw about 6 inches deep. Then walked away. I inspected under the straw every time I watered the whole garden and picked out new potatoes for supper many times. After they finished growing, I took off the straw and gathered the potatoes and had a wonderful harvest. We also gained a lot of worms and enjoyed our experiment so much. That was back in the day when people at the feed store made fun of me for organically gardening and laughed at my methods. I only did it that one time but it was so successful, I saw your video title and immediately knew I was going to learn new things from you today. Now I'm excited to try it. I have only just begun clearing out the disaster that was my garden for about 5 years until last year when I deserted it. So while I'm digging out and planning new things, this will fit right into the plans and I'll go find some straw bales today. THANK YOU for this new garden plan to get excited about. So fun!

Hi Mary! I have grown potatoes like that as well. That is actually what I grew in our straw bales the second year. I just laid it all out and buried potatoes. It worked great! You might go on Facebook marketplace or somewhere and ask if anybody has any old straw bales that they want to get rid of. That way they would be already conditioned for you to use this year. Sometimes you can find those. Perhaps they got wet through the winter and people don’t want to hold onto them. I pray success your hard work and may you have a beautiful garden! Blessings friend ! 😁

That’s a great idea Holly! I actually have some wine cap mushroom mycelium buried in the edge of my woodchip pile. I should probably go check on those. 😁 Blessings to you as well! ❤️

Do you remove the baling wire/twine or leave it on for planting? I really wanted to do bales of straw this year, but didn't get to. I'd like to do it next year for sure.

That’s a great question Laurie. I should have covered that. You absolutely leave the wire/twine on to hold the bale together. It will go around the sides of the bale as the cut side is facing up. I hope this helps you be able to prepare for your straw bale garden next year. You could get some straw bales right now and leave them out and plant cold weather crops in them. They will probably hold up for more cold weather crops in the spring as you set up the rest of your garden. Just an idea! 😁
