If you know me at all, you know I love vocal straw exercises inside and out (of water, that is). 😜
In this 5-minute video, I'll share with you a really simple and effective "Straw in Water" vocal exercise I learned several years ago from an SLP (Speech and Language Pathologist) at Cedar Sinai here in Los Angeles. I still use it for myself and my students today.
All you need is a small glass of water, a regular drinking straw, and your beautiful self.

loved it thank you! I have a left Paralyzed vocal cord from thyroid cancer surgery. The straw exercises help my paralyzed cord meet up with the functioning vocal cord to help maintain a voice that sounds like me. ;)

Is it normal that I still have air to exhale after I physically can't do bubbles anymore? It feels like I'm holding my breath when I do bubbles, and the first thing I do when it becomes unbearable is exhale, but it looks like you're inhaling directly after. Thanks for the video! 🌟🌟
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice 2 года назад
Hi Maria. You should be exhaling all of your air as you do the exercise, so you wouldn't have any air left to exhale afterward. Make sure you are keeping your chest lifted and open while you do the exercise, all while gently pulling your navel into your spine. You can even imagine your ribcage is expanding while you bring the belly in. That should help you exhale all of your air. Let me know if you're still having trouble after trying that. Good luck!

Is it normal to find that the bubbles get bigger/stronger when you descend into your lower range? Or is that because my breath control is a bit off?
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice 2 месяца назад
I would try to keep the bubbles as even as possible even as you descend. It may take a little more breath control to do that. It’s common to want to land a little harder into the bottom. Focus on keeping everything even- volume, intensity, vowel, and the bubbles and see how that goes. Let me know!

hii should my straw be shallow or deep for range extension?
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice Год назад
As you go higher in your range, you may want to reduce the depth of the straw so that you have a little more airflow and less resistance. You'll have to experiment a bit and find the sweet spot where you still feel the back pressure from the straw/water, but it's not so much that those high notes are more difficult to sing. Using a long scale like an octave and a half is good for working on range. You can find a recording of that on my website under Blogs > Scale Patterns. Let me know how it goes!

Is it normal if I'm really really really out of breath after the first exercise and feel like im suffocating while doing it ? I can only last 20 seconds...
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice 2 года назад
Hi! You will build up more stamina over time. Here are a few things to check in on though. 1. Make sure you are keeping your chest open and lifted. Don't let your ribcage collapse as you exhale. And, don't exhale so far that it feels uncomfortable. 2. Make sure you have the right amount of resistance. In other words, make sure the straw is the right depth into the water. You want it to be a little bit of effort to get the air/sound out. It shouldn't be so easy to get it out that you are actually releasing too much air as you go. Also, I like to use just a normal size straw to do straw in water. Not the tiny ones or the smoothie/bobo size ones. See if these tips help, and let me know how it goes!

@@theunlimitedvoice thank you so much ! By the way, my straw is a SOVT straw, it's made for straw phonation and I use it with the "least resistance setting". Thank you again for your advices, and that awesome video :) your exercises are really great ❤️
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice 2 года назад
@@Kimnamjoon2.0 That's awesome! Is your straw meant for both SOVT in and out of water, or just out of water? What kind is it? You may need to use more resistance if you're running out of air! Thanks so much for writing in, glad you are finding these helpful! :) x

@@theunlimitedvoice it's a straw for both in and out of water. It has different configurations to get different amounts of pressure. I think you could find it on google with all the informations, it's pretty sophisticated 😅

Does this work as well as simply breathing through a straw?
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice 2 года назад
Just breathing through the straw won't help phonation. If you want to improve your voice, you'd need to make sound through the straw. What are you trying to achieve with it?
@vt67i
@vt67i 3 года назад
In the first example are you breathing through your nose while breathing out?
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice 3 года назад
Hi! Thanks for asking! You can breathe IN through your nose, but when you are on the exhale (whether it's just air or making sound) it should all be coming out of the straw. No air should be escaping through the nose on the exhale. Let me know if that answers your question!

What if I don't feel buzzing sensation in lips?
@theunlimitedvoice
@theunlimitedvoice Год назад
I had a hard time feeling a buzzing sensation in my lips as well when I first learned this. I think it's very subtle, and I feel it more when I'm in my lower notes. Do you feel like you are doing it correctly other than not feeling the buzzing in the lips? You might be doing just fine. Have you tried any straw exercises without using the water yet?
