#strawbalehouse #sustainable Straw Bale House Build: Day 20 Clerestory
In order to create the pitch for our single slope, shed style trusses, we need to build a clerestory. We use 2X6s and cap it off with a 4X6 beam running the full length of clerestory. This will give our roof a 1:12 pitch which is not quite a flat roof.
With this pitch, we have the option of using a metal roof or an EPDM membrane, which is very common in the Southeastern US and is typically used for Mission and Adobe style homes also found in places like Santa Fe, NM.
Our next video will show getting the trusses up on the box beams, and we enlist the help of an All Star RU-vid Crew! You won't want to miss it!
As always, we thank you all for watching, liking our videos and subscribing to our channel. If you know anyone who might be interested in what we are doing, please let them know about our channel. Thanks!

Wow! You are really moving now. You're videoing on a phone? Fooled me. Very well done videos. I think I've seen them all, but don't remember you ever mentioning where you got all of your skills. I don't believe you made your living as a carpenter if I remember correctly. Still love to here more about your backgrounds and hoping for that video on how you chose tools before and during construction. Everything is quality craftsmanship. Also, looks like you took some time selecting lumber too. Just an amazing job from the start.

Thanks so much for watching. I spent many years working as a commercial photographer but strangely enough, never was really interested in video. I was a "print" guy. And yes, I do all of the filming using my phone, an LG G8 and edit on that same phone too. Yvonne and I have worked on several homes over the 26 years we've been together. So as you can imagine, we've collected tools over the years and have picked up project specific tools for our current homesteading adventure. The 12 inch sliding miter saw was purchased with larger beams and posts in mind like in this video, cutting 4x6 beams. One day we'll have to do a "LIVE" to answer just such questions......one day.

@theupsideofdownsizing
@theupsideofdownsizing 3 года назад
We ended up using 105 bales for the walls. We still have some stuffing to do and the areas above the windows need to be filled, but we have about 12 contractor bags filled with loose straw. We have about 20 bales left over, but between Yvonne's garden and some ideas I have for benches and other design elements, we'll probably have to get more.

It's really starting to take shape now. The ends of those beams are a nice detail. I'm curious about the compressive strength of the straw bales. Will they settle or compress more at the corners than in the middle. Because of the window and door buck outs in the middle there is less straw bale to compress than at the corners. Is this an issue in straw bale construction?
@theupsideofdownsizing
@theupsideofdownsizing 3 года назад
There is definitely compression to consider. The density of your bales play a huge role in this too. We will wait until the roof is done before being to plaster just to give the bales a chance to settle. The amount of overall compression, using our bales, has been between 1 and 1-1/2 inches. Never noticed a difference in compression at the corners over the middle of the walls. Interesting thought though. Thanks for watching!

How did you decide on the 112 pitch? Great videos. I am really enjoying them.
@theupsideofdownsizing
@theupsideofdownsizing 2 года назад
The pitch was actually decided by the height of our clerestory windows. The 4 perimeter walls all have 4 courses of bales plus the box beam for a total of 8'6". The 24 inch high clerestory framing created the 1:12 pitch. Because we have no issues with snow loads, a flatter roof is not an problem. And for me, a flatter roof was more comfortable to work on with my fear of heights.

@@theupsideofdownsizing Ok, great! I asked because I was wondering if you are in a hot climate over there (I'm Dutch so I'm not). But if you were to glass up the windows on the non-sunny side of the house, in that upper part you put up in this vid, you still will have natural light but the not the green house effect you would get when the sun hits windows on the sun side of the house. I hope this makes any sense at all haha

Officially its "clairstree" although my English teacher preferred "clairestoree" Me - I just avoid using it since its an uncommon term in my world. It will be a combination of fixed double paned windows and bottle bricks. In the winter, they will actually add to the passive solar efficiency of the house. And in the summer, they will be shaded by the 3 foot overhang preventing unwanted solar gain.

We've found Shou sugi ban to be an interesting and sort of fun treatment, but we've also found its effectiveness to be limited. Our fence posts needed to be re treated with linseed oil about a year later, whereas the oil based semi transparent stain we've used on exterior beams (on other projects) to look as good today as they did two years ago when originally treated.
