Here I was thinking this could be the best ajj album ever, to dethrone (my personal favorite) Can't Maintain from the absolute summit of Mt. Perfect. But now, I think this could be one of the best albums to come out in decades overall.

Once upon a time, there was a band called Andrew Jackson Jihad, which existed as a desperate refutation of an idea of personal worthlessness. Its means to an end was a naked, unflinching vulnerability, which it wielded like a claymore to produce a number of raw, visceral records - a not-untrodden path for a band of its ilk. A funny thing happens when you embrace that vulnerability, however; when you pit yourself against this idea that you're a piece of shit and you fight it with everything you've got. You get better. Thus, Andrew Jackson Jihad became AJJ, and what had been a therapeutic endeavor transitioned into something new: fuckin' *art*. The broadsword has become a scalpel, and raw chaos has become harmonious jubilation (even if tinged with horror and rage), and I've never seen a more satisfying progression for a band in my life than this. With each album, they realize more and more than there isn't really a wrong way to do art, and I am here for that shit. 10/Fuck Yeah.

Gonna see AJJ with one of my favorites, Open Mike Eagle, this weekend in Saint Louis. I also love Gillian Welch... any chance that these lyrics are a nod to her song off of "Time (The Revelator)"? "Everything Is Free" is a common phrase, but I think a lot of people have contemplated it (with regards to creative output) after Gil put her song into the world back then.
