The Complete Guide To Strawberry Runners! Every year we see these vigorous offshoots coming off our main Strawberry plants. Its great to see and it means the plants are growing and are healthy. But the runners can't stay, they need to be removed fairly quickly.
And today, we'll discuss why. Why is it so important to remove the runners from the mother plant and why do they adversely affect our berry harvests.
But as gardeners, nothing goes to waste. The runners are the single easiest way to expand our Strawberry operation and they are abundant and completely free! There's 3 ways to get them started and I'll show you all of it, every step of the way! Welcome, to Strawberry Utopia!

What if my strawberry plants (potted) are sending out huge amounts of runners (3-7 per WEEK) and the berries are small if they grow at all? Could it be due to over watering? My plants get 7-8hrs sunlight per day. I'm just trying to grow some berries, but the plants seem like they are on a mission to take over the world.

@@Okunniger_Volker I've seen fertilizing with too much nitrogen cause excessive runner production. Also makes the berries small...

We have about 100' of strawberry beds, we expand the runners, weed diligently, and mulch every spring. But as soon as they have begun to ripen and I see the jam that is to come, the squirrels come from miles around to raid. We've tried netting of various kinds, completely enclosed them, but the squirrels just laugh and laugh as they get through it all and feast in broad daylight. Next year we're going to invest in diy hardware cloth boxes with wooden frames. We are serious this time. I wouldn't go to this much trouble for any other plant, but I want my strawberry utopia and I'm going to have it.

I collected around 400 runners 2 years ago. 300 went in at my farm. The whitetail took them all. The rest basically went in a garden i did for a friend. A few were handed out to a couple of other friends. I struggled to come close to that last season. But i saved all but 5. Starting fresh with the additional white Pineberry. They are growing great. My reds are struggling.

I love strawberry runners. I had three pots on a deck at one point, strawberries in one and some annual flowers in the other two. When those two died back at the end of the season, the strawberry put out runners, but only in the direction of those two pots. Like somehow it knew where the soil was. The runners however have been abundant so in July I made the decision as a first time gardener to let them grow and expand my patch. Looking forward to seeing how many new plants we get. Thank you Jeff for the encouraging videos it really makes all the difference especially to a new gardener ☺️. Really appreciate the advice in this video. I overhauled a horribly overgrown and under-producing strawberry bed last fall and replanted 44 healthy parent plants back in the space, giving each plant at least 6" of room all around. The transplants took well before cold weather set in(zone 6). I was thinking I would remove all runners(stolons) from the plants as soon as I see them growing this year so all energy would go into producing blossoms and berries. Your advice reinforces my plan of action. :)
