This can lead to fights between dogs, especially if they are not taught to share or if resources are limited. Dogs may lash out aggressively towards other dogs if they feel scared or anxious in certain situations.
Fearful dogs may resort to aggression as a means of self-defence or to assert control over their environment. Dogs in pain or discomfort may become more irritable and prone to aggressive behaviour, including towards other dogs.
Illness, injury, or underlying medical conditions can contribute to heightened aggression in dogs. Dogs that have not been properly socialized with other dogs from a young age may struggle to interact appropriately with unfamiliar dogs.
This lack of socialization can lead to fear-based aggression or misunderstandings during dog-to-dog interactions. Sometimes, dogs may redirect their aggression towards another dog if they are unable to direct it towards the perceived source of their frustration or arousal, such as a person or animal they cannot reach. Female dogs may become aggressive towards other dogs if they are protecting their puppies, and similarly, dogs may become aggressive in defence of their pack members or companions.
