This is the most controversial song from SKZ last 2019. People hated this song, calling it noise. Listen carefully to the beat drop (chorus part) once again. The lyrics that's not clear because of the beats are: "Common side effects may include nervousness, insomnia, nausea, agitation, anxiety, sweating, vision problems, psychosis, numbness, dizziness, headaches, weight loss." That statement clearly speaks about what the song is conveying. Side effects of a medicine (example, anti-depressant pills, etcetera) that's usually prescribed to people with mental illness like depression, anxiety, and such. You can also see it in their choreography, which is really chaotic and has a lot of hand movements that symbolizes what's going on in one's head whenever anxiety or other mental illness attacks him/her. The back-up dancers represents each member's shadows. (Credits to other stays' theories that I included here) This is why Side Effects is a piece of art, not just an ordinary EDM. Stray kids are using everything you said there to say that you make your own path in life and sometimes (most the time) it will be harder than you thought and everything you do has side effects. Using the drug analogy as a metaphor only. It’s about being lost on an untrod path,( being different from the norm) walking the road not taken ...which is the poem this song is based on by Robert Frost. This song is really different to me. After i learned all lyrics, I've started to listen that song with different feelings. Beside song is amazing, the lyrics.. The meaning of the song is about drugs that's why it's called side effects and why they're screaming. U can also understand if u see the lyrics that I.N is saying at 5:50.
The genre is called the Psychedelic Trance, its one of the most rare kind of trance to be use in pop music. I would say 3Racha are bold and talented enough to convey a message through Psytrance. As PsyTrance only gives you an unknown kind of vibe, where the music only matters. Its like the blackhole of genre, where you cant understand whats going on, but you can only feel it to understand it.
for me, this song is the most beautiful instrument so far they sing "my head hurts" but when i listen it, i feel more calm and relax sometimes i listen to side effects before sleep, its really calming, the instruments is damn, i love it

actually side effects was before double knot stray kids have a storyline started from their debut song district 9 where they were brainwashed and they put them on a system in district 9 stary kids scaped from the system but because they were brain washed they didn't know who's their true selfes which is what their first trilogy the I AM series it basically talked about finding their true self the "bsides for these albums are really beautiful their lyrics are so relatable" after that they released their clé series which is miroh side effects and levanter "double knot is a bside in clé levanter album" that talked about finding their own path in the live if you noticed miroh lyrics were saying in the rough jungle it was me who ran into it I'm okay and side effects lyrics were saying maybe because I throw myself with trust that's why am I hurts its basically talking about the adulthood side effects it's from second album in the clé series clé yellow wood it was inspired by the poem road not taken they have a song with the same name and then levanter was talking about be yourself and take you own path... and that's very long comment but I hope I explained a little bit love your reactions btw if you want to learn more about skz storyline they have a prequel video you can watch
OMG, I WAS WAITING FOR THIS Yes, the song is about a journey, their entire discography is.. actually, there is an order to watch the mvs. Stray Kids makes music about the decisions and struggles we go through from adolescence to adulthood. Side effects is about pain (emotionally speaking.. that's why they r yelling LOL), mental health and how others can influence how u look at yourself. Many disliked it at first, 'cause of the psychedelic melody and the way the transitions are not that smooth, but each detail tells us a story.. the choreography, the scenes, even the colors. i’m pretty sure the song is about mental health issues. in the chorus you can hear it be like: a couple side effects include.... some stuff. Okay so I know I’m extremely late but I had a school project where I was talking about what the meaning behind some of stray kiss’s songs and I wrote a lot about this song (like a lot) and I wanted to share it even if you won’t see this comment lmao This is skz’s darkest, “weirdest” track to this day. The whole song is kind of disoriented and it doesn't follow any kind of familiar structure if you look at their previous songs. There's no real melody either. But it does take the more experimental elements of "Miroh" and amplify them: growls, chants and screams. In many ways "Side Effects" is less of a song and more of an audible experience and experiment. And the visual is equally disorienting. The whole song is a big confusion and shows all their pain, insecurities and anxiety. The best way to explain the song is with what they repeat throughout the song multiple times: my head hurts. The boastful adolescent confidence of Miroh is nowhere to be found in the song "Side Effects," The song is about self-doubt. Its the side effects of growing up - pain, anger, confusion, and anxiety, to name a few Its about the side effects of choosing a path to go (going the wrong way? Should have done something different?) It’s not about the choices in themselves, but the anxiety and doubt that comes with them as a consequence One example is in the mv represented by Hyunjin: While Hyunjin continues to follow his members, he is clearly hesitant towards the new choices. Due to his hesitance and constant worry, he becomes easily anxious and agitated, and this leads to him acting irrationally and later on acting out. One example would be when Hyunjin sees Seungmin taking a picture of him, instead of asking him to put his camera away, Hyunjin throws Seungmin’s camera onto the ground. This results in a physical fight between the two, which not only symbolises inner sabotage, but also disunity within a community. Another symbol is the bus that is shown several times in music video. This bus symbolises the easier choice. On the outside of it there is a symbol of a lion that is also seen in “MIROH”, and the message that they are showing with this is that the bus is the easier and more conventional choice that is often taken by the masses. The members purposely chose not to take the bus and instead walk, even though it means that the road to their destination wouldn’t be easy. However, when the car they used as a means of transport breaks down, the bus passes them again. This time, it also shows an alternate reality where the members are sleeping soundly on the bus, which showing a “what could’ve been” for the members. At the very end of the mv there is a scene that briefly explains the ending message of the song. It shows all nine members walking forward together as one. Amongst all the members, Hyunjin is the only who does not look happy, and yet he continues to walk, indicating that while there is no way to completely quell such doubts, the best course of action is to stick with one’s choice and believe in it. In their point of view the song is about this: Throughout their comebacks Stray Kids has been very consistent in promoting the idea of self-identity and the main message has always been to stay true to oneself. Yet, like every other decision we make in life, their choice to stay true to themselves and forging their own path has its own consequences. In “side effects” song Stray Kids express their regret and doubt, questioning whether their decision to stay away from the masses was the right thing to do or not. The lyrics question whether they will be successful in forging their own path. They’re scared that they made the wrong decision by doing it in their own way. The song indicates fear of failure which would ultimately prove that the system, which they have been rebelling against, was right all this time. And a few lyrics that I really loved and that really stuck out to me throughout the song is: «I threw myself with trust in me. But why am I just being hurt» «My head hurts» «Get out of the way you all (actually I am) I’m right (scared) You all wait and see (can I do it?) » “I’m scared I might not keep these words.” And also this song is a continuation of some of their songs like hellevator, miroh, mirror, question, insomnia, my pace, district 9, voices and more. TLDR: i think your opinion on this song is super different to what i had and its honestly fascinating, and i thought this song was about this generation (gen z ) struggling to grow up in such a sick and dying world. To be honest? I found both your takes on this song to be very interesting. If i remember correctly side effects was before double knot and miroh, i always assumed it was a stand alone song about facing the side effects of being a growing youth in todays modern society. You know, maybe i also thought that this song was about how in todays age, us youth is suffering so much just to grow up, we experience side effects for the goals we reach. Sure you'd probably say this is just apart of growing up but i feel this song fits more to new adults, you're suddenly an adult, everyone suddenly expects you to know what to do with your future. You are filled with so much passion for your dreams and rage and sorrow for what your future appears to be (ie=.e. climate change being a big one, how our future is being ripped away from us at the hands of our older generations). However you'd like to prove yourself against societies views and what you're supposed to do. Everything is black and white except you are the splash of color in this world. To me it feels like stray kids is reaching out to our new youth, our heads hurt, we have insomnia, we feel sick and irritated that we were dealt such a bad hand. Perhaps im looking wayyyyy to deeply into this song but this is what i always thought when i heard it. sorry for leaving an essay in your comments section (also my english is like 50/50 so i hope you can understand :P) also you should react to HALA HALA by Ateez they will have you mesmerized

Omg yesss i wanted to see ur opinion on this song too! It's a very deep song and from all the comments I'm sure u know what it's about now. At first it wasn't my favorite and it took me a bit to actually appreciate. But once I saw and heard every single detail, it immediately became one if my favorites! This song is actually very unique and different in terms of Kpop. No other artist has done a genre like this in Kpop as far as I know until Skz and it just shows their uniqueness. They are pretty experimental with a lot of their music. U should definitely check out Tortoise and the Hare by them, it's so.. I don't even know but I love it 😂😂 I hear people call it the Bohemian Rhapsody of Kpop XD
