I love that this little mini release manages to have four incredibly diverse styles and still have SKZ's flavor. This might be the most "traditional" song I've ever heard from them (and I've literally heard them all), but it still sounds like SKZ. And if there's ever a time when a traditional sound works, it's for a Christmas song. We so rarely get to have such a pure focus on their vocals, and I hate that people outside Stay (and even within) don't know how _gorgeous_ the vocals are with every single one of them. I've said before that Changbin sounds like an angel when he wants to, and he just proved it with what I _think_ is the longest example of his angel vocals in their discography. Other than Felix's tiny high bit, he sang this in his lower range, but just like Bin, he has an angelic voice when he wants to, and that includes at the lower end. We rarely get such a sustained vocal part for Hyunjin's sweet voice, and I.N rarely gets a part that runs so long uninterrupted, and it was beautiful and a really good fit for him. Obviously Han and Lee Know and Chan and Seungmin came through, as always, with the different colors in the mid and high end. This isn't a groundbreaking song in terms of style. But that's the point: it's _meant_ to be comforting in its familiarity. For one moment of their entire history, they went with simple and traditional, and it works perfectly precisely because of what it is. It's like a warm blanket in front of a fire as you watch snow fall. I'll never be here for any manufactured "we need to make the fans feel like they're our girlfriends (and that kind of implied content is always _girl,_ because, y'know, normativity sucks), so let's romance them" stuff, and I'm sure some people are going to take this song that way. But for me, it's just...warmth and comfort and a family with whom I'm safe. And even if someone _does_ view it through the romance lens, SKZ had the backs of those of us who need it and once again kept things gender-unspecific, a consistent consideration for which I'll always appreciate them. This is simple and beautiful and warm, and I'm so happy I held out and didn't listen until the mv, because the family within the video makes this song a hundred times better than it already is on its own.
