the mask thing in partially true. masks were pretty common in asia even before corona just for preventing the flu and common cold, etc. i've heard that it became more of a thing after the SARS outbreak in the early 2000s but i'm not sure how true that is. idols also use them when they're not wearing makeup or haven't shaved or just want more privacy, kind of like how american celebs might wear sunglasses and hats. masks also became a fashion accessory to a certain extent over time, probably because idols were wearing them a lot.
