Finally got around to watching. Great video. Clean HDMI on that camera is something we specifically looked into and works fine with auto focus off. Still using it. Mic is from Rode, not Behringer. The interface was a cheap one from Behringer and in the original footage I included a bit where I said I intended to swap it out. It was swapped out the following day. As for the audio quality of the GoXLR, I think the editor grabbed the wrong audio track, unfortunately. Looking at the clips, it sounds like it was actually pulled from the action cam I was holding :( Weird colour issues ended up being an issue with cam link 4k firmware. Updated it and the issue is gone. Just needed to use OBS de-interlacing.

It's good that much of the issues were fixed, they probably should have included that in the video. They could actually show the process of initial setup and then diagnosing why it wasn't as good as they thought it should be, and then showing the viewer the end results. I think what happened is that they needed to push a video out as quick as possible and didn't really care for the content as long as they can demonstrate that upgrading gear can make a difference.

You should make a series where you pick and choose streaming setups for certain budgets to help people choose the right stuff. I'm no streamer but I do use my webcam often and a really good mic is important for everyday calls and gaming. Hopefully, in the near future, I can upgrade from my Blue Yeti to an XLR mic but jumping into the XLR world is a bit confusing when making sure you have everything you need.

It's a good idea for a feature but further re-enforces the point Epox was making. You can have ALL the right gear and still have a poor outcome. A feature like this should not only cover the gear needed but advice on how to get the most out of it.

Thank you for squashing the BS about the GoXLR audio quality. I agree, the preamps in it are extremely nice. It definitely forced me to learn a bit more about EQ curves to dial in how I wanted my audio to sound, but that would be the same regardless of what equipment you choose. I've never bought any camera or mic and said, "wow, these stock settings look/sound great." Just like any computer component I've ever built with, they always require you to tweak the settings to get the optimal performance for your needs. When I don't get those tuning options from a product is when I get salty. Solid video overall!

Actually, I have a Canon EOS Rebel T7i that I wanted to use for streaming and after a lot of tinkering I gave up on the possibility of getting clean HDMI output... UNTIL it occurred to me to switch to Manual Focus on the actual physical lens and voila! No more focus overlays!! I'm guessing that is how Canon turns off the focus overlays on many of their camera models while people are fighting their way through menu settings... Unfortunately, very little can be found about this if you search online, except for people ranting about Canon's apparent disregard for such an 'essential feature'. Hope this helps, and thank you for your videos. I've learned a lot from them.

Excellent video, as always. And as some people said in the comments: you're absolutely right about adio gear! A good preamp is more important than a good mic: come 20-30$ are fine, but a 20-30$ interface most likely is garbage.

Audio nerd here: your input regarding the mic choice is spot on. I have a Rode Broadcaster, and it is far and away the best mic I've ever used. But if you want the *most* out of it, you have to eat it. Get RIGHT up, close and personal with it. Doing so will produce an epic thump in your voice. Lots and lots of body. It assumes you've gained and EQ'd it properly, of course. But the results are astounding. It is 100% the *wrong* mic to use if you DON'T want a "mic in your face" though. Its pickup drops off precipitously the further you move from it. By design. For Linus' use case: it's definitely the wrong mic to have chosen. Your suggestion for using a good shotgun is bang on. The question is: did he already have one "lying around"?

Just food for thought... If want to upgrade from like a c920 but don't have money to invest in an outrageously expensive camera, there is a "Camera for OBS" app on the App Store that allows you to use your iPhone as an OBS camera for like $20, and there is a free companion plugin required that works for OBS. I've found that the lighting fares way better than a traditional webcam, so If I want to chromakey, I can much easier. 1080p60 is supported, picture quality is vastly improved - though obviously not as much as forking over a boatlad of cash - and I've been pretty happy with the results.

Really good video. I want to point out if you do have a Canon camera they are excellent with Magic Lantern. With Magic Lantern, you can have a clean HDMI out for streaming and ignore recording limits of DSLRs. So all is not lost if you went with one, like me. Also, @eposvox have you checked out the MOTU M2 or M4 audio interface? I think you'd love it. IMO the best entry-level interface and I even went with it over a Scarlet 2i2. It is what I use for all my streaming and RU-vid vids. Unfortuntely I think this comment might get buried so I'll have to keep hounding you to check them out, haha.

The Canon SL3 does offer a clean HDMI out w/ Auto focus on. I've been using this camera for my live stream now for about 6 months and it's a great cam for 1080p60 however, the 4K option will only do 30 fps. I mainly went with the Canon because during my research it had the best low light performance especially if you use a prime lens and its one of the fastest auto focus cameras.

When I built my streaming pc /setup I got a Ryzen 7 3700x, MSI x570 Mobo, RTX 2070 and 16GB ram. I got a cheap XLR Mic (Behringer XM8500) and a Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen... Which I never researched and just looked up Audio Interfaces on Amazon UK and bought the best one with the money I had at the time and I had and still having many issues with it. I did upgrade my mic to a Samson SAQ2U since I was using two Mics for streaming and gaming (snowball ice mic on ps4) now I'm able to use one mic to stream and chat to my viewers and chat to my squad mates when I am gaming on my PS4. But the Scarlett Solo is the problem, I have to have gain at max in order to have decent audio levels for the mic. Even with phantom power on and off makes no difference. When I initially got the Solo, there were times were I had the gain at 1 to 3 gain and even then it was spiking but sometimes I had to max it but at some point I just ended up maxing it all the time. Also I switched ports but nothing makes a difference and I did re install Windows... Eposvox can you help me please? 😂😓

@EposVox I use a Nikon D810 with a cam link and can bypass the 30 min limit by not actually recording. This might work with other Nikons that have a clean HDMI out. By setting the live view on-screen display to off & setting the Live view to infinite. This allows me to output up to 60fps 1080p. Caveats I've found: No way to remotely trigger the live preview over USB or any iso/aperture/exposure settings so its a bit awkward if its not easily accessible. Camera menu shows up over HDMI feed when open. Getting the camera to continuously autofocus was a bit janky sometimes requires half-press on the shutter to activate or re activate (its shit anyway with the mirror up so just use manual on a wide lens, so not too much of an issue). Settings can be found in: Custom settings > Timers/AE lock > Monitor off delay (c4)> Liveview > no limit. Setup menu > HDMI >Advanced> Live view on-screen display > off. Firmware version: C 1.14 L 2.005

Although I’m 100% in agreement that the go xlr is plenty for most users, I will say that as an audio engineer, Midas pre amps are nothing special They’re clean, loud and have a low THD, but they’re pretty cheap and honestly considered low-mid tier pre amps in the audio world That’s why a lot of behringer products market their stuff with “Midas preamps” On another note, the more important thing in the audio world is the digital to analog and analog to digital converters… You can have the best pre and if it’s going through a garbage converter it’s still gonna sound bad Overall though I don’t get the claims that the go xlr is bad; it has plenty of power for notoriously hard to drive mics like the sm7 and has a lot of effects controls built in; I have a 25,000 home studio setup in signal flow alone and I still use a go xlr for my pc/gaming rig

I think my biggest take away from this is budgeting and time it takes to setup. As someone who is building a setup I can say for sure that it takes way more time and effort than what you think it does. From lighting, audio, camera angle, visuals, acoustics, socail media, and even space management. My desk is kind of small, so it limits what I'm able to put on it or around it, so I have to be very creative. Its taken way more time and energy and in some aspects money, than I thought it would, but I'm definitely happy with the end product I'm working toward and can't wait to get my streams up and running

@@EposVox also something that I personally realized is budget, but not just now, but for the long term. Like yes you can save money now, but if later down the line you're going to have to upgrade anyways, why not spend extra money now, so you don't have to spend even more money down the road. So finding that balance between saving money over the long run and staying within your current budget can be tricky. Im new to the channel, so i don't know if you've done a video on this kind of thing, but if you haven't I think it'll be a really informative topic for the people who are newer to streaming, video production, audio production and etc. And even a good video for people who are currently in it because it also brings up the topic of diminishing ROI.

A note on Canon DSLRs--It really depends on the model. I've got an EOS M50 Mark II that has clean HDMI out if you're using the Video mode. It's generally a $700/$800 camera. Right out of the box it had excellent compatibility with my capture card. If people are using the Elgato Camlink or any capture card, highly recommended you check the compatibility specifications on their website to see if your camera will work without anything more than a D/C Power Adapter and an HDMI cable. Also recommend that, if you're in the market for one, check if the camera has a flip-out/flip-up screen that you can see yourself on. Trust me, it helps.

I'm a fan of LTT and I think Linus himself is a top dude, but this is the first video of theirs that I thouht was proper shonky. As I was watching I was drawing comparisons to the Verge's PC build (sorry, but I was) It was a lot of little things which culminated to made it lack the normal LTT polished and well researched content. the end results were, as you saw, bad framing/crop of the webcam in the end with Linus' eyes center in the frame instead of in the top 1/3 and loads of dead space either side of him. In such a white(ish) room he could reverse the elgato light(s) into a corner or to the wall to create a fantastic big soft light on his face with good fall-off. And then add a LUT to compensate for color cast from the wall. There's never a Brandon about when you need one.

If there's one video I would love to see from you, it would be about audio post-processing for streaming. There are so many videos out there made by people that make it obvious within the first 5 minutes of their videos that they don't really know what they're talking about. How do you go about doing an EQ for your personal voice? How do you properly set up compression? I've been so puzzled by it but all I can find is "yoooo what is up, this is how I have it set up, I don't know why, but this is what sounds good for me, just copy my numbers" all over the web.

If you are shooting 60fps as long as you are not slowing the footage down you can still have the shutter speed at 1/60. 1/120 is taking a lot of light and throwing it away. Now if you going to do a replay with a camera at 50% speed do 1/120.

While I often watch a lot of your videos and enjoy a lot of what you have to say - your talk about the Midas preamps and 'bang for the buck' of the GoXLR was a bit off, in my opinion. There are better audio interfaces, for a lot less money. I personally prefer the Scarlett (or Clarett) preamps - and all of that can be had for much, much less than the cost of a GoXLR. For example, you can get 8-12 inputs with the same (or better) quality preamps for half the price without even having to look too hard. You can get the MIDAS preamps in a device with 8-12 inputs for even less than half the cost of the GoXLR. The GoXLR has some post processing stuff built in - that's nice. But the rest of that device is a gimmick - and the device is terribly overpriced. The other devices I mentioned with 8-12 inputs of equal quality, can output the audio to monitors and other devices and be routed a wild variety of ways - far more extensive than the GoXLR - and again, for half the price. Ultimately, I think the GoXLR is a good piece of hardware for people who want their post processing goodies bundled with their 1-mic Audio Interface, but it is grossly, grossly overpriced. There is absolutely no bang-for-the-buck with that device at all. It has neat LED's auto-sliding sliders and a wealth of other things that bring no real value and are pure gimmicks. That said, I also wanted to point out that while post processing audio is great and all - if you NEED that to make your mic sound good? Something is probably off with your setup, or something in your setup isn't as good as you thought it was. A mic setup with a nice preamp should sound good without much needed post processing - making that 'kind of' a moot point with the GoXLR as well... it's nice to have in the device, sure. But I'd rather have another 16+ XLR inputs ... you know, like what you get with other gear that costs less.

“Behringer Broadcast mic” ... not sure that RODE would be happy with that! And as good and neat as the GoXLR is, the mic pre is certainly not from the top end of what Midas has to offer, it’s there because Music Tribe owns TC and Midas, and it’s great for marketing ... like the Behringer X32 has Midas pre’s ... How do I know about this, I used to own a Behringer XR16 with Midas pre’s ... the upgrade to the Midas MR12 was noticeable, and the only physical difference is the pre’s (although yes, less number of them) ... and then you move up to “real Midas” pre’s in something like the DL153 that sound so much better again, that I use for band work.

An app called SparkoCam allows you to get clean video from many Canon DSLRs, even old ones like the Txi series. I use that software with my T2i and am able to get some pretty nice results. To remove the SparkoCam watermark from your video, you do have to purchase the software. Not ideal, but worth it for me since I had a Canon and several lenses sitting around already. For me it was worth it to spend a bit to get a working, fairly high quality camera for streaming purposes. SparkoCam captures the video from my Canon via USB, so no need for a capture device. Surprisingly, it even works at full 1080p through a USB 2.0 port, much less 3.0. FYI, SparkoCam creates a virtual capture device which can then be added as a source in OBS. Look at the SparkoCam website to make sure a particular model of camera is supported before purchasing the software. They also support many Nikon cameras.

See, I have an old Nikon D90 which honestly, doesn't look too shabby in video mode I was gonna use it for streaming myself with sparkocam until I remembered that I have a 50mm prime lens and nothing else. So, that plan went out the window, but on the flip side old school prime lenses are cheap, cheaper than a Brio and well, I might just save up for a 28mm lens or something similar because it's actually a really great picture quality and is night and day compared to my c920 which has served me well over the years. The D90 may very well be old as all hell but it can look stunning next to a webcam. As for audio, my setup is unnecessarily complex thanks to me opting for a FireWire based interface, don't get me wrong I love my Saffire Pro 24 DSP and it's great for what I do most of the time, but if I use it for streaming I run a 50% chance that it doesn't want to play nice with OBS, in simpler terms it only plays well with DAWs. I would say more about mics but honestly that's almost entirely subjective, short of your environment, which will decide condenser or dynamic, otherwise as I said, subjective to what sounds good to your ears.

what you said about canon is not correct at all. I run a canon T6i and a canon eos rebel SL2 for streaming, running both through Elgato cam link 4k and do not have any overlay issues, clean hdmi out, no power issues at all. The jutter he was experiencing is a stupid simple fix in obs. just turn off scale filtering and jutter is gone. as far as focus, if you are streaming, find where you plan to be sitting and focus it in to that spot. From there you have the option to adjust your focus if needed.

Would you say that the Canon issues are fixed now over USB with their webcam utility software? I have no issue with my 5DmarkIV as a webcam, though I understand this is high end. (Just note if you have an AMD processor there is issues with canon drivers supporting that sometime, and only way I got it to work was plugging it into the usb passthrough of an old gaming keyboard... and not the passthrough of any other device I tried).

When I upgraded my streaming setup, I used the exact same Behringer audio interface with an Amazon Basics dynamic mic and the audio quality is really good. To the point where that combo is my goto not for audio for all my content now. However, you're absolutely correct that in order to get great audio out of the mic, I have to crank the Behringer to max gain. I'm pretty sure a better audio interface can yield even better results from the same cheap dynamic mic.

At least the little Behringer UM2 interface - as opposed to their little mixers like the 302, 502 - actually can power any microphone, because it has true 48V phantom. So at least a little bit of a bullet dodged there. Then the Rode Broadcaster microphone used actually has plenty hot output by itself, and it's a large membrane condenser, that the preamp quality and shitty ADC isn't really of major concern. The BM700/BM800 cheap microphones don't warrant an expensive interface because "make the microphone sound good" part does not occur at all. The self-noise of the microphone due to very unfortunate engineering is too high for the interface to matter, and the internal gain is actually already pretty high so you don't end up running the interface preamp too hard. The engineering is not a mistake, it's a deliberate compromise to make the microphone run on 5V bias from sound cards somewhat rather than not at all. I have found one of those for nearly free, and i reengineered the electronics a bit similarly to ffcossag's suggestion, with slight differences. I disagree with Linus's assessment that the ModMic2 sounds "not too bad" in comparison. Naturally it is quite usable but at least the way he had it, it had absolutely no top end. It sounded horrible. I'm not sure whether it's its inherent sound or what's up with that. It's actually super easy to construct a well sounding headset boom mic, but it would have an omni characteristic - if you try to beam shape, you get sonic compromises. I think you should get the UM2 yourself for the sake of your audience and check out its limitations. I'm sure you will run into them, but i mean, you keep recommending the Samson Q2U, and you know the builtin interface in that is audibly kinda bad too? So that's a comparison that you need to make. I am certain that you will find a Superlux or store-brand dynamic microphone that will be a 1:1 acoustic match to the Samson for a fraction of the price, but without the builtin mediocre interface.

The problem is that most recommended things are just either incompatible with each other or otherwise overrated. Or overly complicated one way or another. Blue Yeti, I had nothing but horrible experience. Focusrite both me and my friend had plenty of issues with it, non of which are mentioned online unless you specifically search for them. In the end I got a reliable combo for my needs after doing deep research and It was still a struggle even when I know my audio. Rode NT1 with the AI-1 YAY!

Great work again, but if you are prepared to load custom firmware to almost all low-end consumer Nikons, then you can have totally clean HDMI out and NO LiveView recording time restrictions. I have an old nikon d5100 which gives perfect results. I suggest maybe you can schedule a video on "How to Stream with Low-End Nikon DSLR's" and compare the Nikon footage quality to the Canon / Sony etc.. The Firmware url is here: simeonpilgrim.com/nikon-patch/nikon-patch.html (Everyone must read the instructions, and agree, about updating their cameras on that site), but the custom Firmware even gives higher frame-rate 1080p than the stock nikon FW.

Perhaps I'm being overly picky, but when you started talking about the GoXLR and the Midas preamp, you said "preamps," as in plural. As someone that does not stream other than an in occasional remote meeting and had no interest in a streamer-focused piece of equipment, you got me really excited that there might be an audio interface with motorized faders using Midas preampS at a "low" price. Rode broadcaster is condenser mic, it's strong output doesn't really need more than 45Db gain. So there is no reason to use really strong, 60Db+, preamps for Linus's mic. Also TC Helicon is behringer, and same midas preamps can be found in umc202hd, which is more affordable.

The exact reason I now need a GoXLR are all the reasons you stated. See in my normal edited videos, using a Scarlet, Cloudlifter, and SM7B I can add in post on Vegas, EQ, Compression, Noise gate etc, but on my podcast live, I cannot do that. In comes the GoXLR to save the day. Pretty weird misconception. If anything, I think a misconception is the rodecaster can do what the GoXLR can do. Because while it has settings like this, you cannot dial them in for your specific needs, at least, not without some jailbreaking firmware I assume. Good luck waiting for an update or years for a cfw.

EposVox I just meant that either an update or custom firmware for the rodecaster could take a long time if ever to be able to customize their settings. It is my understanding that you only have on/off switches for noise gate, eq, compressor, deesser etc. You apparently (at the time of comment) cannot dial in anything on the rodecaster. I almost got one instead of the GoXLR, but your videos along with your discord community helped me to understand the GoXLR is just what I’m looking for. Jump in the settings and you can get clean hdmi (I belive it's called clean overlays). One other benefit of CFW/ML, I can get RAW pictures and Video from the camera even though its not officially supported - but thats a different topic for a different video :) Do I recommend a Canon dslr for streaming - no, but if you have one already and want to mess around with CFW (with the caution you might brick it), give it a shot imo.

Saying the GoXLR has better audio just because of the Midas Preamps isn't the whole accurate picture either. It's been proven time and time again that you can get clean, great sound out of something like a Shure SM7B out of something far cheaper like a Scarlett for example. What I'm getting at is its not just the preamps, it's more a result of the sum of its parts. Nothing against Midas' stuff at all, but they're not the end-all, be-all.
@EposVox
@EposVox 4 года назад
A cheap Scarlett cannot provide clean signal from a sm7b tho. Nor a RE20 which needs less clean gain. You 100% need a cloudlifter with that and the pre-amps aren't good enough. The entire point of his original video was his home setup not matching the production quality and standards of their videos at the office and addressing that, making many mistakes. Poor audio quality will quickly turn around any good "content" to having no viewers. Content is king, presentation is queen. It's not a circle jerk, it's perfecting your craft. Linus has 10 million yt subs and doesn't need to tweak much, the people watching this video do not, and have to work harder for viewership. "Content is king" is the most unproductive and trite statement people make about online creation. It offers no unique value and suggests people should remain stagnant because if they were going to succeed they would have already. Big nope.
