Street Fighter Alpha 2 still stands as my favorite fighting game of all time. I'll never forget the Summer of '98 when I picked up the Street Fighter Collection at my local Wal-Mart. I remember thinking on the way there how badly I wanted that collection since it had Alpha 2 on it, but didn't think my Wal-Mart would have in a million years. Well, a million years came early that day. I felt like Ralphie finally getting his Red Ryder BB gun in A Christmas Story.

@@pauldesigncomics2625 - I prefer Ultra SF4, overall. The backgrounds & music in Alpha 3 were generally, generic & a step-down from Alpha 2's. There's no background in Alpha 3 that approaches Rolento's brilliant & technically impressive, Alpha 2 stage. Alpha 3's World Tour mode on consoles was really great, though.

@sloppynyuszi
@sloppynyuszi 4 года назад
Compared to other ports this isn’t anywhere near as watered down as it could have been. All the main characters are intact and gameplay methods. Graphics are a bit low res, that’s probably its worst crime. But compared to the GBA port of Street Fighter Alpha 3, this seems more impressive. Characters more detailed and all backgrounds seem intact. SFA 3 seems a lot more compromised compared to the original, and the GBA can accept higher capacity cartridges and has a more powerful processor than the SNES

lvl5Vaporeon or run on an SNES, but saying it runs is giving the port too much credit lol. Animation is EXTREMELY choppy and the characters are small, low resolution redraws that just ruined the pixel art, but it fits because of that, no animation and tiny characters. It’s a TERRIBLE looking and playing port tho, stick with Playstation or Saturn. Makes you wish it was ported to N64.

The SNES version came out at a time where people lost interest in the SNES so the game flopped on the SNES. The N64 came out around the same time and way more powerful then the SNES, so Capcom should have released it for the N64 instead.
@thatgirlinamask8699
@thatgirlinamask8699 3 года назад
I know this is an old comment but as far as I know the n64 had a difficult time running 2d games, not that it couldn’t, but the processor was optimized for 3D. Most 2d games that you see are actually flat textures placed on a 3D model using a fixed camera angle, not true 3D. Even the PlayStation did this with some street fighters, using polygons for the hurtboxes and hitboxes, but it required they almost rebuild the game from the ground up I think

Aside from the five second load times almost everywhere (and losing many of the hidden characters; ex.: Shin Akuma can be *fought* but _NOT_ played as), there's absolutely nothing weird about it. Chain combos, the anime visual style, and a multilevel super meter may have been new to Street Fighter in the first Street Fighter ZERO/Alpha, but those things were around in the original Vampire/Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors & Vampire Hunter/Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge. Ohhhh, it's not the only game with load times on the Super Nintendo. Megaman X2 & X3 both have the five second load times before boss battles (it occurs after the boss lifebar fills, before the battle actually starts). How about the Gameboy Advance port of Street Fighter ZERO3^/Alpha 3^ (Upper) next? Or maybe the rumored GBA port of Marvel vs. Capcom that was ultimately canceled?

The SNES port of the game was interesting, but damn was the music crap compared to the PSOne/Saturn arrangements. There were details in the backgrounds that were missing, a ton of slowdown and missing voice clips for Dan Hibiki. All things considered, the effort was solid though. I get it, the SNES was no powerhouse but the fact that it handled the game at all was cool.

13:06 "some stages including..." wrong with the plural. Correct me if i'm wrong. Waterfall stage is the only stage missing. Also snes is strong enough to run this game. All the lag caused because of decompression of decompressed and sound uploading to spc700. It sacrifies time to gain storage. If snes had the storage comfort, game would run better.
@ggn3
@ggn3 4 года назад
You're correct. All the normal character stages and the hidden Australia stage are in the game in spite of some background details either lacking animation or being removed. Just the waterfall stage is missing. Plus, the loading from the cartridge is just the compression chip in it unloading the data it needs for character sprites, stages, sound, and music. On top of this, SNES SFA2 does still include Chun-Li in her classic costume and Shin Akuma as a hidden boss. However, there's no playable version of Shin Akuma unless you resort to game cheat devices.
@gizaha
@gizaha 4 года назад
@@ggn3 SDD1 decompress just the sprites on the fly. Sound samples are not compressed (check with snessor95). Most of the lag caused because of the non efficient sound engine. I debug it and found that each time resets the spc700 and uploads from start sound code, music data and samples. For some reason is not efficient and takes huge time to do little work. I didn't take a deeper research, but one day i might edit the sound engine.

Funny as it may sound this is the only version of SFA2 I ever played and I loved it to pieces. It definitely was my favorite fighting game at that time that set bars for me in plenty of ways.

Always had a blast with this game for the Saturn...easily my favorite of the franchise. If you haven't checked out Last Bronx for the Saturn/PC, that's a nice weapons-based polygonal fighter. I originally played the American version but bought the Japanese version a few years back. Still very fun.

As someone who played SFAII on the SNES, I enjoyed years of fun with it but also regret some of the limitations the game had in regards to some of the characters move set.

When I realized this version of the game existed, I thought it was some kind of cheap hack or something, until I played it. Just incredible.

Mickey Mania on the SNES has load times. No idea why. Genesis/MD version runs just fine without loading.
@rodrigomolinsky

The CPU is the reason, along with more data (more colors, even with less resolution) to be loaded into the RAM. The Genesis has a direct memory access unit with faster transfer speeds than the SNES. Although the SNES can display more sprites, it can only reach its display limit with small ones. Also, compression was something more common in the SNES games (i.e., Capcom was too lazy to compress data for Super Street Fighter 2 for Genesis, making it with 40 Megabits). If you watch closely, there are a lot of SNES games with loading, but just a few (like Mickey Mania and Batman Forever) disclosure that. A lot of games have just a blank screen for about 2 or 3 seconds. Just pick Vectorman for Genesis, than play a Donkey Kong Country game. You'll notice it.

Captain America and The Avengers had like a full minute of loading on SNES.

M Scott Johnson SNES CPU is too weak to do decompression on the fly, that’s why Mickey Mania has slowdown, game uses a special compression technique. Same with Alpha 2. This is what I’ve heard, there’s a youtube channel for the guy who made them called Game Hut.

Syndicate and Civilization featured loading times as well. Still I loved both of them as well as Street Fighter Alpha 2. Mickey Mania, not so much.

I'm a fan of this series. I'm sure you've reviewed literally every gaming console and handheld under the sun by now and shifted to various Retro Games and I'm enjoying it so far. This game in particular I used to own the port of this game. This was the only free access to SFA2 I had at home until I got the PSX on my birthday the year afterwards. It was 1996 and I was only 10 at the time so it ain't like I would've been able to get that console on my own free will! 😂 Anyway, not the best of ports but still enjoyed it nonetheless, it was decently playable. A few years ago I bought the game again just for nostalgic purposes.

Brotha Top Hat I would love to see the ultimate Street Fighter clone reviewed sometime “Fighters History” a.k.a. Karnov’s Revenge.” It truly made an attempt to compete with Street Fighter however really did its best to mimic Street Fighter the most of any fighting game I’ve seen from that era.

Keep in mind gamers in Europe like Mr Top Hat Gaming Man didn't even have Nintendo 64 yet until March 1997, so late Super Nintendo releases were a heaven send if you hadn't upgraded to a PlayStation or Saturn.

many years later - the satakore version is the final version of sfa2 for the saturn, i have that but i dont have the budget release for the psone yet :( the loading time at the beginning of levels is due to a bug, there's a fix for it which is odd

While the load times could’ve been shortened a little more with a larger cart, understandably Capcom did this more for the fans as a send-off, and the effort the devs put in just really shines so much. Was really cool that they hid the SNES/SFC soundtrack in the PS2 Alpha Anthology, as a bonus! It all makes me wonder if the SNES could’ve ran Alpha 1, maybe more like the CPS I port?
