I love how for a second, you almost think she's going to get totally overwhelmed by Vega. And then she throws a fucking *_couch_* at him, and you're like "Oh right, she's _Chun-Fucking-Li._ She's got this."
This animation was truly ahead of it’s time still timeless and love this fight wasn’t one sided this was an all out war and Vega was ruthless and vicious
I know it’s sacrilege to say it, but this was much better than the original Japanese soundtrack. The tempo and style of that track sucked all the life out of this scene. It was like watching an MMA fight with smooth jazz playing in the background.
It wasn't casually, it was pure adrenaline. She got mad, realized she was on something that could throw and threw it. Like normally, couch throwing isn't a thing lol, this was pure fight or flight survival adrenaline, especially with the wall smash she used adrenaline to power her moves so she could crash him through that wall.
@@Pheylan I mean, this is a series where a guy can punch you 20 ft in the air and throw magic blue fireballs. I’m sure couch throwing is well within their normal capabilities.
I really like how in this movie they display their special moves as street fighters without it being cheesy or awkwardly thrown in there. Very well done!
This scene gets me on my feet with fists clenched every time! Chun Li is almost passing out from blood loss, we've seen what a vicious sadist and narcissist Vega is, we want desperately to see her give the dirty bastard his just desserts. It's so bloody well done and especially with the pumping KMFDM soundtrack, this fight scene never fails to thrill, and is definitely my favourite fight in the movie.
One of the most amazing fights animated. Chun-Li utterly powers through this through sheer force of will, thinking and skill to fight someone prepared to kill her, armed and stronger than her. If she passed out from blood loss you can be sure that Guile would torn Vega apart, but as fun as that would have been to see I'm glad that she got the win on her own.
The atmosphere, the soundtrack, the fantastic fighting and moves....simply the best moment of the movie, epic and amazing, even after all these years!!
Omg, I just said to my boyfriend I never rated Chun Li but this it literally the best fight I've seen in anime, and the best street fighter movie 🤟🤣 absolutely loved it
it's very strange, this anime is not very good but just this scène is very épic and incrédible. And the rest of this anime is prédicible. (sorry for my bad english)
While I loved the heel stomp on his face, I think it should have broke his nose instead of giving him a black eye. Still one of my all time favorite fight scenes thought
As a kid, I never realized Guile said, "shit", and Vega said, "bitch". I also never noticed the fanservice in this fight. I was just satisfied to see Vega getting kicked through the wall.
The original version we got when this was released had it censored down to PG-13. I don't remember what Guile said instead of "shit" but Vega's line was changed to "witch". They also censored out the claws dripping with blood and Vega licking the blood off of them. We didn't get an uncensored version until some years later.
I like how Chun Li doesn't need Guile's help to win the fight, but he still saves her life by getting her to the hospital afterwards. Good showing by both of them.
@@moy6569 on paper, Guile is no match for Vega on a good day. Chun Li is a good match because of her agility/elusiveness. Guile is much heavier and wouldn't be able to absorb too many of those claw strikes.
My favorite part of this is right before the finish, as her body almost gives out from exhaustion and blood loss, but she see's an opening, and knows if she doesn't take it right then and there, she's done for, and then shakes it off, and taps into her rage to power her through, and just annihilates him. Such an incredible fight.
That was the ultimate survival instinct moment I loved! She was completely exhausted and bleeding yet she dug deep to use every last bit of energy to finish him off when she saw that opening! She knew it was her only chance.
Bruh people have to understand is this animation was BEYOND it's time and still ages well to this day. Not saying 1994 didn't have others beyond their time but this is definitely in the top 5.
@@Vectorman2X yes totally agrees we have had a lot of action bangers Ghost In The Shell 1995, Gundam 8 ms team, Escaflowne, Evangelion and the list goes on
Nah, it wasn't this super rare thing that was introduced in 1994. I mean good animation is always rare, but movies+OVAs often contract top animators. Hell for example just recently I saw the movie OP for Dirty Pair: Project Eden (1986). That cool opening is from the mid 80s
I love how it takes a second for her to realize who she is even fighting. How adrenaline and reflexes really work. She looked right at him when she dodged the first attack, but took a second look to be like "oh crap it's Vega"
I think if he had kept the mask on, and not stopped to taunt her, he probably would have won. The intimidation factor the facelessness his mask brings to a fight definitely works in his favor.
I really love reaction too. The genuine fear. When soemone like CHUN LI is legitimately afraid of soemone? You know they’re a real nightmare I like how she’s never really confident throughout the entire fight. She never takes if for granted that she will win. I like Vega, who keeps being sure of his cities and paying for it. It really does both of their characters justice, while showing why Chun Li is a hero.
Well if you were in her shoes and realized that this dude is a freakin psycho, then yeah you would go full savage as well Even when she’s about to pass out from blood loss, she still charges head on and knocks him out and is like “GET THE HELL OUT OF MY APARTMENT AND TELL YOUR BOSS WE’RE COMING FOR HIM NEXT!!”
I like that not all of Chunli’s screams were battle cries. Some of them sounded terrifying, like she was more of a victim than an opponent. It really sold this as a street fight to the death rather than a typical super hero fight.
@@SoranPryde honestly it's exactly how Vega should be portrayed given his back story. and if there is ever another life action movie, make the actor watch this scene multiple times.
Such a visceral fight, the KMFDM track really drives the desperation and fighting for survival Chun Li is facing. Even now I will still watch this fight every so often for the masterclass in animated fight scenes and the much better western dub that eclipses the original
Very true. If you watch this scene with the Japanese music score, it is nowhere near as good as this. This scene with this music is an unadulterated masterpiece.
I think this version is trash, I watched this first and the music sounded totally off for me. Then I see your coment about the original having a different track, I searched the original japanese, and boom... Much better! I don't understand why americans have to always change the material (the same I have seen in DBZ), where's the respect for the director's original vision?
Have you ever heard the term "One perfect scene"? This scene is a great example of that. I like this movie but this scene in particular was just perfect.
I have never seen the movie. I remenber this scene from time to time. It was recommended by a friend as an example of an animated fight being done right.
I always found the english dub is to be effective due to the change in ambience and the KMFDLM song Ultra. This is one of my favourite anime movie fights second to the climax in Sword of the Stranger
I love the guitar solo when Chun-Li heel-spin/chinese burns his face - him freaking out whilst she just death stares him in a kung-fu pose with that guitar riff going on is just epic!!
I like the moment near the end of the fight where you see how both utterly spent they are; Chun-Li has to to fight not to pass out from blood loss while Vega is struggling to stay on his feet. And I *really* like how they translated the Spinning Bird Kick into that series of handstands. This is just a really super fight scene.
I love 80's/90's anime but not every 80's and 90's anime had strong animation like this...and modern anime has plenty of greatly animated animes (One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun/Index, Jujutsu Kaisen, The Tales of Zestiria anime, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Mob Psycho, etc..) Just to name a few.
I remember seeing this when I was like 5 and running to play street fight on snes. This scene is iconic the only one 20yrs later that still gets major searches. Chum-Li is a Kicking Goddess ✊🏽
This scene works better than some modern fight scenes involving women because it's somewhat believable. Chun-Li isn't some overwhelming power house,. She's a capable fighter and has power behind her attacks; however she's mortal, there's definitely a difference in strength between her and Vega. For a moment you're convinced there's a chance she will die, for he initially has the upper hand and does a number on her. You can feel the tension especially where she almost fades from blood loss. It starts off as she's just trying to fend off a home invader, then it hits her that this guy is out for blood. She's not all "come get your ass kicked" to Vega, she's thinking "oh crap he's actually trying to kill me!" With some quick thinking she turns the tables and doesn't waste a moment to finish the fight.
@@thestrongestlivingcreature That people keep saying how awesome and realistic the fight is. Criticizing how people like that Chun Li's life was in mortal danger instead of her just curb stomping him from the get-go
I think it goes beyond that, and does that thing that is sometimes absent like in an John Wick, where the hero takes a beating and has hesitations, but in the perfect moment is rock sturdy in resolve and laser calculated, to clutch a win. I guess when done too much is cliche, but when not done enough is just missing the emotion or expectation. Vega can only be seen as a competent threat, if he were a threat enough to almost score the kill, and that Chun shook at moments but still pushed hard to win made it that much more meaningful. If it were easy, it wouldn't be memorable.
Among the best animated fight scenes in any feature film. Love how she's not afraid of the claws and quite visibly kicks the crap out of him by the end. Strongest woman in the world, indeed!
hells ya!! this fight was one of the many epic fights in this awesome anime of street fighter. it was impressive she was fighting that hard even with the blood loss from vegas claw... true testament to her strongest women in the world qoute. and chun is definitely worthy to fight vega though. her kung fu is formidable and she was also taught by gen for awhile. ya the dude who fought akuma and wanted a death match with him. which just makes it even more legit and badass. then in game in sf2 she was the only other one with that wall jump too. kinda perfect match up. but i was hoping guile would fight vega back in the day... wondered how he would done to this day. and oh and the usa dub ost makes this fight way more hype and entertaining. :D
She definitely went into fight or flight mode and she instantly chose fight, but you can tell at first that she is scared and defensively fighting. But then he mocks her and she goes on the offense to f him up. That’s what I love about the scene. She knew that she most likely wasn’t going to come out of it alive but she also wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of walking away from it. So she made the decision to take him out while knowing she could/would die. Such a great scene
As a kid this scene had me at the edge of my seat. I knew Chun Li was going to win but each time she got slashed, the fight got more and more intense. In the end she triumph despite the amounts of blood loss and the disadvantage she had against Vega. That kick through the wall was deserved and satisfying at the same time.
I really like how they included moves from the game. For example in addition to the Spinning Bird Kick, Chun Li also has the rapid kicks that come out when you mash a kick button, and Vega has his crouching heavy kick.
It's the Lighting Kick. Also when she stomped on his face it was the Heel Stomp; a simple, but effective jumping move that when executed right could dizzy any opponent in game. Loved playing as Chun-Li back then.
Oh shit, and in a double whammy, USFIV came after this but Vega's ultra2 is splendid claw and is almost certainly reverse inspired by the scene Vega tries to set Chun Li to fall into choppychop.
The whole fight really shows how terrifying Vega is as an opponent. Chun Li managed to beat him only by smashing up his face and pissing him off enough in the process for him to make mistakes that she exploited
Chun Li I like you a lot, I fell in love with Chun-Li from Street Fighters 2 Movie because she is sexy, beautiful with an attractive face and her anime eyes that made my heart fall in love, this Chun-Li is an anime girl like Tomoyo Sakagami. Sweetie, I'm not left alone, I would like to give you some roses, Chun Li I love you very much💕💕💕💕😍😍😍😍💕💕💞💞💞💞💞💞💘💘✨✨🌌.
Fun fact. Chun Li was specificity created to counter Vega because statisticly none of the other characters in game could defeat him. When you look at the game mechanics they're the only two who could bounce off the walls and no one else is as fast. Gamers proved that he could be defeated by any other character though
I love the fact that Chun Li used her agility more than strength. It was obvious that Vega could overpower her, but she used the place to her advantage combined with her agility to take him by surprise and overpower him instead.
There are moments in this fight where you see Chun Li slowly realizing what this suddenly broken-out fight means. First she realizes she is being bled by his attacks, then a little after she focuses her sight on his weapon and later feels her consciousness slipping away. At that moment, when she focus her attention on Vega's claws, I was like "Why the focus? Does she plans do disarm him or something?". But no, I think the point of the animator in showing this focus what because she realized that this guy was not there to beat her as to show superiority, incapacitate her, make a point, coerce her or capture her. He means to kill her right there and, as soon this finally sinks in to her, she clings to consciousness and manages to defeat one of Shadaloo's best fighter with all she got. This is a little piece of storytelling through a FIGHT SCENE that had no dialogue exchange. And it hits the target, kudos to who wrote this scene and the animators.
I know he got his ass whooped in the end but Vega was a fucking beast. That lean back dodge and then rising back up to be face-to-mask with that psycho glare in his eyes was badass.
Watched this soooo many times, every time the lamp shade shudders I get chills ! Amazing voice work and editing and combining the music with the combat, first class 👍🏼
Sad but true. They all have that plastic-y polish from animation software that takes away from the raw detail & grit the pre-2004 animations were known for.
Never give up hope We now have The Super Mario Bros movie and that is still doing gangbusters! Plus, the animation was so well done and felt like you were playing the various games again And because of that, we all know Legend of Zelda is next up and I get the feeling another studio will be in charge of the animation for that(possibly Studio Ghibli; probably not but a girl can dream) We are now in the age of some kickass video game series and movies now!
This film is the perfect demonstration of both how much the right soundtrack can enhance a scene, and how impactful animation can feel if you get the physics right. You really feel that those hits would hurt. Excellent
This movie proves how important music and sound is to a film. The Japanese dub version is like a completely different movie of lesser impact. The U.S. dub is astronomically better, its almost scary how much better it made this movie.
Greatest fight scene in a movie ever. The pacing, music and back and forth is incredible. Nowadays the woman would just mercilessly bet the guy. Instead she just wins and that makes it intense.
Sad that to this day that this movie is peak story telling for the entire Street Fighter series. Wish the games would adopt this tone for the story mode.
I remember buying Hyper SF II because it advertised this movie as bonus content. Never saw a single clip or screenshot of the movie before that, but I was not disappointed. Extra content in games was something else in the past. I miss you dearly, PS2 era.
I remember seeing this for the first time. Got such a thrill that left a great impression on me. Yet when I tried to watch the Japanese sub... ... sometimes the English just know how to make something great.
This is a pretty good representation of Vega’s boss battle in SF2 as well as a great fight scene in its own- he has the advantage at first with the claw, but once you start hitting him more and he drops both it and his mask, his advantage and defense kinda goes out the window
