Episode Notes:
1. Captured on the Mega SG.
2. 5 companies made Streets of Rage 2:
Sega CS
Ancient
H.I.C.
Shout! Designworks
MNM Software
3. Yuzo was certainly the lead, but a couple others contributed heavily to the sound.
Music Composition: Yuzo Koshiro, Motohiro Kawashima
Sound Effect: Yuzo Koshiro
Sound Driver: Takeshi Maruyama
4. The European version allows you to pick the same fighters in co-op using a code.
5. There are few differences between regions in this game. Some mild censorship is there for instance. Mr X smokes a cigar in the Japanese version, and you can see Blaze's underwear during her attacks.
6. There was a pack in of this game with the Sega Genesis called the "Fighting System" briefly. It's quite rare today to find it complete.
7. While Streets of Rage 3 was a solid game itself, I still consider part 2 the better game overall.
8. Streets of Rage 2 is available on multiple platforms and collections today, including the Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.

Another reason Yuzo Koshiro’s music was so epic in this series was because it borrowed heavily from electronic music that was so prevalent at the time. If you listen to groups such as Black Box, Inner City, and Technotronic you’d be hard pressed not to find similarities. All in all, my absolute favorite soundtracks of any game ever.

@Michael Bonavita Yeah don't forget Enigma MCMXCAD and Maxi Priest's ''Close To You'' which sounds alot like Streets Of Rage 1 & 2. Heck even the bonus Enigma MCMXCAD release back in 1991 had a special remix of ''Princibles Of Lust'' which had the Maxi Priest ''Close To You'' beat in it and Yuzo Koshiro borrowed heavy from that song especially when listening to SOR Level 4 music.

Lots of people still don't know (probably because they are different genre's) but Streets of Rage 2 was Sega's answer to the Super Nintendo having Street Fighter 2 exclusivity during the holiday 92' season. That's why they went all out and gave it a 16Mb rom size to compete. Yes they are different genre's beat em up vs a 1vs1 fighter but Streets of Rage 2 comes out on top vs vanilla Street Fighter 2 all day.

Nice timing, been playing this and 4 a lot recently. I think this is one of the best 16-bit games ever. I play it all the time and never get sick of it. It's just pure fun! Sexy graphics, deep gameplay for a beat em up, meaty sound effects, it's all there. But its crowning achievement is easily the music. This and Sonic 3 are the two games in my opinion that don't even sound like they come from the Genesis. Amazing understanding of the hardware and a crafty use of samples. One of the highest quality soundtracks of the era, and it comes from the plucky Genesis. Still impresses me to this day. I remember just assuming the 3rd one was the best when I was younger. I asked for it at a flea market stand and the guy said "all we have is the second one" and I thought eh what the hell. Later on I realized I really lucked out. Love this game

I was a Sega kid, but I'll be honest, I never liked SOR protagonists. It was a disappointing tendencies of the 90's in general, when you are playing beat'em-up controlling some "totally rad dude" or "strong-and-independent", looking at the enemies, thinking "THAT who I want to play!" A year or so ago, however, I played a rom, called "SoR2 Boss hack", where characters were replaced with 4... well... bosses. Played with Abadede for hours, for days! Beat it on the Hardest with no safe states. I wasn't a fan of SOR 2, but with a mod I could finally appreciate what was in that game, what hooked so many. So, I'd like to take a time to say sincere *Thank* *you* to a guy who made that roster change. I played some crappy hacks, that tried to do the same, so I can really appreciate the work you put in that, making it like if it was intended that way.

I think the 16-megabit cartridge size was also partially in response to Street Fighter II on SNES (which was hyped for being the first 16-megabit home game). The Genesis didn't get SF2 until 1993 so Streets of Rage 2 having a similar size game was something for Sega to market during the 1992 holiday shopping season.

I was literally playing this yesterday and I thought to myself “ It would be awesome if Sega Lord X did a review of this”. Awesome video like always. I don’t care what anybody says I love every entry in this franchise.

Can't recall how many hours my mom and I played this game in the Past. Our record was setting it on the "maniac" difficulty using a special code and starting with only 3 lives. We did beat the game, but still couldn't beat it staying alive together, she kept on dying fighting Mister X. I played as Max and she took Skate. Maaaaan, those were awesome times...

The graphics and game play blew my mind when I first played Streets of Rage 2 in the early Nineties. It still holds up just fine today.

I was a big gamer when I was a kid and sor2 was the game I played the most. I still remember how it plays perfectly. And once in awhile I go on RU-vid and listen to the whole soundtrack with a little smile on my face while I remember all the memories. To me it is the game with the best soundtracks, it was ahead of its time and I liked all the tracks, it was constant.

One thing I think many developers don't get is that one of the most important aspects of any beat em up is making it so that every single hit feels like it has impact. That means having the player be able to really feel each punch or kick land, and to do this you need the proper punch/kick sound effect. The sound effects when landing shots is one of the most important aspects of any game for that matter. It's one thing that makes games like Castlevania stand out, as there's a really nice feeling that comes with every single connection you make with the whip in that game. Each hit is accompanied by a satisfying thud sound effect and it's very satisfying. This game has the exact same thing, along with a split second freeze of the game action each time a hit lands. It's one thing this game did perfectly and is something many developers don't think about.

Streets of Rage 2 on the Game Gear was my introduction to the series and will always hold a special place in my heart. This series is dope and I'm super excited we finally got a new entry after so long.

I basically ended up with SOR2 by chance. What a lucky day it was, taking a gamble on a game because the box art looked cool and it sounded like "Street Fighter"!

Sega and Steam did something interesting with this game. They gave it and Revenge of Shinobi, the games just showed up in library one day. Games that were so good they motivated me to buy the Genesis collection.

That gave me chills. I can't recall many games in the 90s which were more antecipated that SoR2. The first images on magazines while in production still showed some different special moves - like Axel doing a Tiger Uppercut-like which ended up becoming his flaming uppercut. Even though this is the only installment in the series with no alternate endings, it is the most balanced yet and the soundtrack is unbelievable. I hope you give a take about SoR3 in the future as well. Great video!

Fun fact: Yuzo Koshiro also wrote the original tracks for Ys I and Ys II. He also has credits for Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Shenmue. It's amazing how much prolific work this made is responsible for. Also pretty neat that his sister is the lead game designer too! Small caveat, Streets of Rage 2 had another composer, Motohiro Kawashima, who worked on a few tracks entirely himself. It's worth noting too that Koshiro developed an MS-DOS program to make full use of the Yamaha FM synth chip. Incredible work that largely goes unrecognized.

The ONE nitpick I have with streets of rage 2 is the omission of the team attacks that were in part 1 and brought back in 3...now one could argue that barely anyone used them but having the option is always a plus but once again great video Sega lord please do more reviews

Streets of Rage was my favorite Sega Genesis game until Street of Rage 2 came along. The greatest beat em up, also with the greatest soundtrack ever on this system. Suddenly twenty five years later Streets of Rage 4 comes as my new favorite beat em up ever! What an amazing, fun and musical franchise! Thanks for your great video and those awesome memories of my childhood.

The music, especially the Never Return Alive boss track, is still straight 🔥 to this day. I remember the boss fight against Shiva being fun and challenging as he was a match for the heroes with his own super moves, and fighting style being very similar to Axel & Blaze. SOR2 is so good that I know of some friends streaming this on their gaming channels, showing how 🔥 it is even today!

The fact fans had to wait over 20 years for a proper sequel to Streets of Rage is criminal. One of the many great series Sega has almost neglected next to the many great series they have neglected. Keep showing them you and your subscribers love their games. Maybe they’ll finally have that proverbial light bulb go off one day making them realize. Wow these guys really want to play these old titles again 😂 🎮.

Loved the fact that you included "Slow Moon" in the music section. So good! But the whole soundtrack is flawless anyway :) One thing that I'd add is how satisfy using a pipe is in this game. The physics, the sound... This game is just awesome.
