Streets of Rage's Groundbreaking Music

The history of video game music and electronic dance music share many parallels. 30 years ago, Yuzo Koshiro brought VGM and EDM together in Streets of Rage, and transcended what was possible for the medium.
In 1991, Streets of Rage introduced authentic cutting-edge House music to video games. It was only possible thanks to a small piece of technology shared by the Sega Genesis and the famous synthesisers of the 80's.
A version of this video was originally uploaded on April 29, 2021. That version mistakenly said that the SNES soundchip uses subtractive synthesis. I decided to take it down as I wasn't comfortable with such a large mistake and how that point informed the direction of the video's narrative. This is a re-upload with that section fixed, as well as the removal of another line that many people were uncomfortable with.

Game Score Fanfare is a show that celebrates music in video games, an aspect so overlooked as that's often the point: to work without you even realising it's there. I look at games through the lens of its score, discovering the unique perspective and roles that music can bring.

It's a shame you wanted to be inclusive but the moment cis people cry about it, you side with them :/
@GameScoreFanfare
@GameScoreFanfare 3 года назад
@@YukiDelValle that's not what happened. It was the latino community who were upset with the usage. It can be seen as dismissive to their language and culture. It's seen as a word that English-speaking people are pushing onto them. Believe me, if it was just cis people who were mad that I was trying to be inclusive, I would have left it in just to piss them off.

@@GameScoreFanfare You think we, latine non binary people, don't exist? It was cis latin people, they were trying to tell me masculine is neutral lol That's a shame anyway
@GameScoreFanfare
@GameScoreFanfare 3 года назад
@@YukiDelValle I'm really sorry. It's a delicate topic, especially as somebody not from that culture. It's also harder on the internet, as you don't know who are the people behind the avatars and comments. I don't really know how to best approach it. I just know I had people yelling at me for being insensitive from all angles, when the intention was to be more inclusive. I only ever included the line to highlight the role that minorities had in bringing the sound to the world. All I am trying to say is that you are valid, and I don't know the best way to say it.

@Laika4895
@Laika4895 3 года назад
@@ThinkBeyondOrdinary i know im late and you probably already figures this out, but guessing from the interactions in the pinned comment, i think it was the possible use of the word "latinx?" Many latino and hispanic people don't like the word (rightfully so) and already use "latino" as a gender neutral term (like padres meaning parents and such, despite padre meaning dad). I wasn't here for the original video, but im going out on a limb and saying that latimo and hispanic people got upset at the use of "latinx" and it was removed. I do apologize if this is incorrect however. P.S: the reason that latino and hispanic people don't like the term "latinx" is because (and this is from me being hispanic and the latino friends whom i asked about this) its a made up term that was forced to onto latinos when the term latino already existed. It was also made without input from the latino and hispanic community and it kinda feels white savior-ish, given it never originated in latino america. That's just my reasoning for it, and i do apologize if its incorrect

Some addendums: Red Book Audio did exist before 5th-gen consoles. The PC-Engine CD add-on made it somewhat mainstream in Japan, but elsewhere the only other console with Red Book quality was the Mega CD/Sega CD. This was not Koshiro's first foray into bringing house music to the Mega Drive. Previously he worked on Sega's Super Shinobi/Revenge of the Shinobi. The music in that game was such a delight he was brought back for Streets of Rage. I highly recommend checking out that games OST. The song China Town is among Koshiro's best work.

You're exactly right. Each video is a passion project. Unfortunately, the passion just isn't there for it at the moment. Life got real busy. I've been trying to focus less on a single project, and more on wherever my heart is leading me. At the moment I am working for a couple different RU-vidrs as an editor and trying to make content a full-time gig. If/when that happens, maybe the passion will return. As someone who _did_ grow up playing this game I always think of it as that 2 player game where you both fight over who gets to wield the pipe. 'Player two has picked up the pipe, drop kick him and steal it for yourself.' Ha, my friend and I spent most of the game fighting each other rather than the enemies, fun times. Probably the first game I played where I spent more time doing my own thing instead of what the game was designed for, up until GTA made it normal. Of course it was great in single player too but when you're there and the other guy picks up a nice weapon his back starts to look reeaal tempting...

In Mexico, Sega was always small. Between 1992 and 1995, all my friends were given a SNES by their parents, except my friend Franciso, he was given a Sega master System (in January '92; I remember because I immediately asked my mom to buy me a game console, and she gave me a SNES for Christmas). It was the SNES what made me fall in love with games and specially their music. Music I would like to be mentioned sometime: Super Turrican 2, Contra 3, Super Metroid, Stardew Valley, Divinity Original Sin 2, Silent Hill 1, Mortal Shell (both its dark ambient soundtrack and its black metal soundtrack).

Sure, and let's ignore PC Engine CD/TurboGrafx CD music which not only had high quality CD music, but also it sounds unique from any other videogame music. Like Pirate Island from Legend of Heroes ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cq49gSnUG4o.html Or Palace from Ys Book 1 and 2 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZSJeWCz2cXo.html And of course gorgeous Stage 1 music from Valis ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fKxRxmJnBgk.html Today videogame music has better technology, yet... there's no music that sounds like that. Even PS1 era music doesn't sound like that. PC Engine CD music is an example of how 80's and early 90's Videogame music would've sound like if CD technology would be mainstream. Japanese music artists of that era are epic.
