Strengthening The 1933 Ford 3 Window With Custom Rocker Panels

Now that the floor has been fabricated and is spot welded to the subframe, Matt can work on building rocker panels to help tie the A and B pillars to the floor, and give lots of strength to the body. The panels are constructed for 14 gauge steel just like the front section of the floor. After lots of tig welding, Matt has two rockers panels fitted which dramatically improved the strength of the 3 window body, Next we can focus on building a hoop that wraps around the back of the body to hold the b pillars in place and will hold the deck lid hinges in position.

Great build! Wish we had those tools/equipment "back in the day". But allow me to pass on some "paternal" advise from an "ole" tin knocker with years of flat head experience. Started in a body shop in 1957. Use the lift if possible to preclude a case of "bodymans knee" in your later life. Spending time on your knees vs. standing up while fabricating and welding will save years of pain/discomfort later on in life. Ask your dad. Good luck.

I agree Using knee pads or kneeling pads would help too. I’m 50 and my knees are trash

Good advice, I spent my entire working life as a tin basher in the U.K.. Seventy years old and my knees are “fubar”. I remember my doctor telling me to use my feet as they were for standing on, not my knees. Ain’t hindsight a wonderful thing !!

Used to not be interested in chopped and channeled until I started watching you and your approach; keeping as much of the originality of the cars look by being methodical in the approach. For me, the multitude of projects is daunting, but with a planned attack and friends to join in the "fun"; you've got me looking forward to seeing what you're doing now. So far, the 39 is my dream to watch you work on. Thanks Matt for letting us along for the ride.

Coming along nicely . It will look very nice when painted . Hopefully the doors line up as well as you wanted , with any tweaking & the rockers put on . I love the look of this car . The body sets right , looks low slung , forward pitched , ready to rumble ! A dream machine , if there ever was one ! Excellent work , Matt !

Looks like you are doing something that ford didn't do until the early 60's . With the body , floor and frame all welded as one I'd call it a unibody structure ... If i remember from previous videos you welded the floor to the frame I think . Not questioning your work . You agree ...
@IronTrapGarage

The frame isn’t welded to the body.

A few episodes back, Matt built a subframe out of rectangular tubing that is being welded to the body and floor. This subframe is then bolted to the frame, holding everything rigidly in place. It is a fantastic answer to the flex problem common in channeled hot rods....
@MrAmartin8
@MrAmartin8 2 года назад
Oh ok . I saw the vid about the sub frame thinking it was going to be welded to the frame . Then i saw the bolts and understood what you all are doing . Got it ... Nice work ...

I watched this because I want to channel my 3 window body over the new frame I am building. The sills I have are just around the door and nothing in the back for a floor. The front floor has holes and it has a 4 inch chop that I plan on fixing. Question # 1 from me is what gauge is the floor? Question # 2 How much channel does the car have now? Question #3 Are you planning on chopping the roof? Thanks!
@IronTrapGarage
@IronTrapGarage 2 года назад
14 gauge and 12 gauge for the floor. Not sure how much channel never measured. Just set the body to what looks right but it has a wedge channel where the rear is channeled less than the front. The roof is chopped already.

I have watched the videos concerning this car and was not sure if the body is directly welded to the frame or are there rubber supports to the frame. I have a similar situation that I might attempt with my 55 3100 since the floor and rockers are gone
