On 22nd March 2017 a team from Haigh Rail came to stress the first 1.000 metres on the GWSR's extension to Broadway. Two anchor points of 5 fully cliped up panels are located at 500m each side of a central pulling point. The gap to be closed in the middle is calculated according to a number of variables, including the length and size of rail, and the temperature of the rail.
The rail is put on small rollers every 8 sleepers, and pulled together with hydraulic rams. It is then welded together, and the whole length fully clipped up.
This short film shows the stressing process, during which the two rails are pulled together for a distance of approximately 10 inches.
A description of the day's work can be foud on the extension blog of the GWSR:

It was always a welcome sight, seeing the welders dropping the weld, when you have been up all night on a stressing job, meaning the job is almost done and it is almost home time.

It certainly will be tonight!

This is very helpful to me as I witness my first rail stressing. please upload more video

Thank you for filming little known process to laying continuous welded track! Next process thermite welding I presume?Keep up the good work to reconnect Broadway. Oh, how far to Honeybourne Junction??

Broadway is now connected by rail, and we plan to start services to the public on March 30th 2018. Honeybourne is a further 4.5 miles away, but we do not own the trackbed.

When the width of the gap to be pulled together is calculated, is the true straightness, or lack of it, of the length of track being pulled included in that calculation? It would seem that if a length of track wasn't dead-straight, a certain amount of the length of the pull would just be straightening those curves, rather than stressing the actual rail material.

No, for the curves we use side rollers on each sleeper, which allow the rail to be pulled round curves, rather than across them.

Side rollers are indeed used but must be positioned correctly on the web of the rail. Also best practice would be to restress both rails at the same time using two sets of pullers,

The interval between side rollers on a curve is determined by the radius of the curve. During stressing, the tendency of the rail to move laterally (sideways) decreases as curve radius increases and vice versa. So, the distance between side rollers decreases as the radius of the curve decreases to prevent this lateral movement. For example, on a curve with a radius between 600 to 800 m, side rollers are placed every 6 sleepers whereas side rollers are placed every 10 sleepers on a curve with a radius of between 1200 - 2000 m. The radius of the curve also determines the length of rail you can stress through a curve. The length you csn stress decreases as curve radius decreases.

Why are you stretching the track? Do you then seal the joint with thermite?

Pre stresses itml. So when it gets hot it doesn't buckle

@Blakfoote
@Blakfoote 3 года назад
@@beringstraitrailway it will yes but to a point where it should not snap and make a train derail. The point of stressing is to ensure is does not buckle in high temperature or snap pull apart in low temperatures, I have yet to do the destress course to get familiar with the formulas however hands on I been doing it for the past year.

No soltaron lo suficientemente las fijaciones costo mucho para cerrar el cerrador de juntura y también faltó el termómetro del riel es decir la temperatura

How much gap is kept in between these two rails?
@PoxyMoxon97
@PoxyMoxon97 3 года назад
It depends on the welder, usually around 25mm

Not a lot different really, except that the rollers are different shape to give more support to the sides of the rail.

in north America we use rail heater machine with a bunch of propane burners on a lorry that heat up the rail on a long span ( 500 feet/152 meters or so ) the thermal expansion of the steel make the rail longer and removes the stress ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kl59uP4ej7c.html

MOW worker here, thats way to much to pull. but you should also show the entire process of knocking anchors or taking off clips, not just pulling with a rail expander. the amount of broken rails from this is was probably quite a bit. im sure youll come back with no none at all and i call bs if you do. im a class 5 foreman and destressed 2 locations today alone for an undercutter coming monday.
