The Stretch 2 in K390 is the perfect beater EDC. Well, until Spyderco makes the Stretch 2 XL LW in K390, that is. 🙂

I’ve been using the Police 4 in K390 since it came out. It’s still my favorite pocket folder - partly because of the steel, which I love, and partly because you get so much of it. The FRN model is more comfortable in hand, IMO. The rounded edges feel better in hand, and I don’t mind the aggressive bi-directional pattern.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
You have the G10 version. That one is nice. Yes the FRN might be more comfortable for some people and easier to smoothen out the corners but the G10 version of the Police 4 is...pretty cool! Might be too big for most to carry. I have been looking at the LW versions...mad expensive...and while I do like the FRN handle scales...i do like some weight. This Is why I really like this version of the Stretch2. It has nested liners...like i said...i do like some weight

@@SpartanJohns I should have clarified, I have both the original K390 in g10, as well as the light weight version. The LW is better in hand. I also has some heft, due to the liners and sheer size and weight of the Police. It seeks large at first, but it kind shrinks on you. Cheers!

You should get some Camilla Oil or miniral oil. Both are edible and will protect your blade from corrosion. I use Camellia oil on my 1095 Damascus knife and its works great. I have an M390 edc knife now and I still rub oil on it after I sharpen ir strop it. I do like to use ceramic plates and the srop on my M390 one prettty often. Not to restore it but because it seems to get sharper and sharper the more I work on it.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 месяца назад
I do not have an issue with the patina on my k390. And have not noticed any rust. The only thing which ever caused a dull spot was contact with glass. I imagine ceramic does the same. Stropping more will give you a finer edge. But once in a while you need to do a complete sharpening(remove the apex and form a new one)

When I bought the Endela K390, the Stretch had not come out yet. One day after I cleaned gunk off it from out in the yard, I absentmindedly left it in the drain to dry. I never do that and most of my kitchen knives are carbon steel, but I forgot - too many meds at 76 I guess. Well it did etch into the steel and I have two reminders on the blade. I prefer the Endela to my PM2. It takes up less room in my pocket so that I can actually find something else in there. That is hard to do with the PM2. I also even like the back lock more. I picked up a Code 1 and am hoping their back lock isn't too stiff for me. We'll see when it gets here. And yes, nice video, we can look up the specs ourselves. Most out there are a waste of time.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 месяцев назад
Glad you liked the video. I have been looking at the Endela myself. I recently bought a Manbug K390 to play with the steel a bit more. I thinned it out and reduced the edge angle. Right now it is under 10 degrees per side and still has no issues. If all goes well and I can get to 6-7 dps and still not have it too "fragile" I might consider the Endela to modify. The Stretch 2 I just got to like too much at this point. Cold Steel's Tri-ad-lock is definitely worth it. SOme are stiffer(my American Lawman is very stiff) but i like the added "safety"(Even if, in all honesty, i don't need it...still nice to have)

Depends on how you carry it. I put deep carry clips on them and carry right side tip up. Both are very similar. I prefer the stretch because it feels a bit thinner maybe because it is less boxy. But not much difference. At least imo

With you 100% on the assymmetrical grind. I recently bought a Hogue Deka Magnacut and it's ridiculous how the grind gets thicker and thinner at points, and each side is very different from the other. It really takes away from the beautiful supersteel when it isn't an even grind.
@SpartanJohns

i have noticed this many times with many manufacturers. I always assumed it was a fully automated process so if one blade in a batch would be assymetrical all would be. so far that was the case for spyderco. but other manufacturers have even bigger differences. my cs uh is such one example. from a functinal pov the differences might not be that significant but, as you noted, it does take away from the beauty of the tool

I feel like it was totally honest and non-biased. I would like for you to do a review on the Kershaw blur and magnacut Kershaw traditionally always runs their steel. A little soft just slightly. I have enjoyed this video a lot, I really appreciate you going into all the details. I have been on the fence with this particular version of the Stretch since it was released, because - as you know - I already had the k390 PM2 and these two knives could be indeed siblings. And I would not be that much bothered by the non symmetrical grind as I sharpen freehand, so my angles are neither perfect, nor symmetrical. You mentioned an important point with the slightly more negative angle of the blade (relative to the grip) - I absolutely agree on that. Indeed - when doing certain cuts with the PM2 I wish the blade was a little more tilted. I have the Schempp Bowie and I also just got the Ayoob with SE edge that both have this feature, but both of these have quite a special design and I would not consider neither of them optimal for a 'do it all' knife, rather then 'hell this is fun to use from time to time' knives. I will for now most likely stay on the fence with the stretch. Not because it is not 'good enough' for me, but I keep often realizing with the PM2, that I would prefer this kind of knife (blade shape, handle shape & size) to have no finger choil or ricasso - and there are very few knives from Spyderco that do have that. One is the Caribbean and then the newly released Leaf Jumper (though the blade is shorter and for now only in VG10). It is not a deal breaker for me, just something I would prefer more. Now Spyderco is coming out with the Stretch XL in Cru-Wear, but I expect the price to be close to 2x the k390 Stretch, so I will most likely pass. But for the long cuts (cardboard in my case) the longer blade with this shape would definitely be attractive. Thanks again for this great video and for adding that direct comparison to the PM2.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
I compared it to the Para 2 because of you! And I am glad you liked it and found it useful. I also like to sharpen freehand for working knives, but because I want to compare specific edge angles and finishes as in: compare the same thing over and over...I use the WS. The Stretch 2 will, most likely, receive a full height convexing...as you did for your PM2. This one, i feel, can take the thinness very well. I also like the tilt this blade has in regards to the handle. I find it very useful. The G10 handle scales would be a great benefit for the stretch2. there are moels with g10 handle scales but they are quite pricey. I think the Stretch is just a great work/test model. I heard that the K390 in the PM2 was a bit softer....this one...i would say is:on point! not sure how hard but I can't find a flaw with it...and what I would need it for. You mentioned the Caribbean....I am now uploading my "videos Series" about the Caribbean. It is If you have not bought one yet...you might find information which is useful there...but those videos will be, at first, only posted on my patreon. i'd love to send you the links in private! I did not know about the CRUWEAR Stretch XL....I recently got a PM2 in Cruwear. so far I like the steel. but I have not tested it too much I am glad you liked the video and comparison!
@matusknives
@matusknives Год назад
@@SpartanJohns The comparison to the PM2 is really helpful indeed - and I am pretty sure that many will agree. Indeed the k390 PM2 was a bit softer (mine is between 63.0 - 63.5). But I don't see any issues with insufficient edge stability. When I manage to give the edge some damage, it is more on the side of microchipping, so I don't have any complaints about it. One clear advantage of the Stretch to a PM2 is the thinner stock - the convexing will be a bit less work. Once convexed the Stretch will be a laser I would imagine. I actually did have the Caribbean PE - a very interesting knife, but I have not seen any signs that it should be introduced in other steel than LC200N which aims at different kind of use. I would actually be curios to see a FRN (lightweight) version with more rounded edges. I just joined your Patreon, so I will check out what you have to say about the Caribbean soon :) I have been lately a bit distracted as I got myself a little fixed blade - TRC Classic Freedom. It is a smaller and thinner brother of TRC This Is Freedom (yeah, a funny name indeed). The F&F is fantastic, the HT of the M390 looks excellent and the handle is very comfortable. I also got the K1-s from the TRC, but will probably let it go because the handle does not quite fit my hand even though I love every other aspect of it.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
@@matusknives I found your IG yesterday and sent you the links to the Caribbean vids there...Then I noticed you joined my Patreon! Thank you very much for that! I am usually also of the opinion that just because a steel run a bit harder or softer by some companies for different models, it does not lead to such problems like edge instability...there are cases where, if the difference in hardness is big...it might be less resistant or sharpen funny. I have noticed, with my Cruwear PM2, that for some models, in more exotic steels, they do put thinner grinds on it. My ZDP Endura was not such a case as it it an older models...but my PM2 Cruwear and the Stretch 2 K390 have similar thickness grinds.... I am thinking about that, convexing the K390 Stretch. But it's gonna have to wait. I am currently busy with doing as much as I can with the Bradley 2. The Caribbean is more comfortable than I initially thought it to be. I don't see other steels being used for it. It would be a strange choice to say the least. It is set up as a "water/salt" knife, the handle shape, texture, how it is build inside, the blade size, how it carries in the pocket...But I think that for a regular person, if they can pocket it...it would not be a bad choice for an edc. it won't rust easily...that's for sure. I never had/held and TRC's. I have heard that F&F is great and have seen videos where some people praise the geometry. I'd love to hear your opinions

@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
it is hard to give you any suggestions because I do not know how exactly you sharpen it. here's the first thing which pops into mind: if you get a good burr with the coarsest stone and then the knife does not cut as well after you put the final edge on it..in case you are using water/oil stones...the finer ones might have high/low spots on it and you might think you are sharpening in the same angle as with the coarse stones but due to the stones not being flat the final edge angle might be a different one than you mihgt think. that is just a guess. if you are using water/oil stones and hand sharpen. If not...it might not apply. but if you tell me how you sharpen, what you use...step by step...i might be able to help. Another common mistake which some people make is starting the sharpening process with a 'semi-sharp' blade. Always start with a dull blade. Dull it yourself. Flatten the apex. That way you will be able to tell when you created a new apex. I have a few videos explaining this on my channel(and on my patreon-most of them free). Have a look!

Hello, thanks for the feedback, it's very interesting especially the fact that you tried several edge angles. Could I ask which micron size is your stropping compound ? I am looking into getting my first "tool steel" knife, K390 seems very interesting, I wonder if the increased toughness compared to say, 15V is what makes it so good ? Just a note, from what I've read it seems like the Seki-City factory still uses dry belt sanding, while the Golden one uses water cooled systems.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
First times I sharpened it I used BRKT's stropping compound. When I started liking the steel more I started using diamond and CBN stropping compounds. Since I like to test I went from 6M to 3M to 1M (DMT) to 0.25 (CBN) stropping pasts. It all works depending on what kind of edge you want. What I did with this one was to try to keep it at a working sharpness with the BRKT compound and it worked(the white one....over 10 years old. not sure what they put out now) As compared to 15V...at 15 dps....now of them took damage. However I just, a few weeks ago, dropped the edge angle to 15 dps on my 15V. This K390 is somewhere at 12-13 dps...and still no chips/bends with hard wooden knots(talking about regular work not trying to chip/bend the apex) Whether Japan uses cooled systems or not....this K390 blade behaved superb after the first sharpening. So far....my opinion would be that 15V is a different beast. I stropped it for a few weeks(keeping a high front end sharpness) and it kept a good bite. Normally, a steel after being stropped for 7-10 days, on a daily basis would get a much finer edge,that is: be sharp but lose its aggression. 15 V did well in that regard. As a working knife....the Stretch 2 K390 is a good choice especially if you know how a "non stainless" steel behaves. Yes there will be a patina, yes it will rust if you don't take care of it. But taking care of it implies you just wipe it off on a dry rag(i use my sleeves or pants that is why i have so many holes in them) before putting it in your pocket.

I tried both methods. Many times! I can honestly say that for everyday tasks it matters very little. In tests you might see a difference. But, imo and experience so far, that is mainly determined by other factors, not whether you sharpen into or away from the edge. I would say it mainly depends on how fatigued your edge is. This can come from use but also from "oversharpening/overstropping". I talked a lot about this subject, in many videos, on my Patreon. I think that edge fatigue does play a very important role with many steels. So far I could not notice it in 2 months of use with k390.

FirstI have to admit I love knives, but I am really bad at sharpening, except for my scandi grinds. So I caved and bought a ken onion worksharp grinder. How do you think this knife would do on a ken onion? I know it will convex it, but that’s not bad?? Second, I have several spydercos, and really like them all, but I always feel a bit worried about the tip. How is the tip strenght on this? I don’t do anything crazy with my folders. Hi! Thank you! I am glad you found the video useful! I gave a Stretch2 to a friend who also has the Ken Onion Worksharp grinder. I will ask him and if he has used it on his Stretch2 K390 I will get back to you on that. Now...about THIS Stretch 2 K390. I reduced the edge angle. Down to about 13 DPS. Which is pretty low. I have not had any issues with the tip. Not on this one or on my Para 2 CRUWEAR where I also went down to about 12-13 dps. I did not pry with the tip! But for regular work...and here I am talking cutting thru thick cardboard, thick plastic, and knotty wood, I have nevee had a tip break on me. IF you drop it on a hard surface....yes...it might snap. Especially these because htey are ground pretty thin. This is what makes them such great slicers. For the past 2 days I gave my Para 2 15V a break and have actually been carrying the Stretch 2 K390 again. And I love it! I Think this knife has the best(thinnest) factory grind, I have, from Spyderco. Coming back to convexing the edge. I can say this because I have tested it for years: A convex edge will be more resistant and, at the same edge angle, it will feel like it goes thru material much easier(or maybe it was just my way of sharpening). But what I am trying to say: convex is not bad! And with K390...if you go to a 15-17 degrees per side edge angle...I don't think that, with regular or even "hard core" edc tasks, you will encounter any serious damage. I'd love to hear back from you after you sharpened and used it a bit! Greetings from Romania! Denis

Hi again, thank you very much for your reply. I have the knife on order from Lamnia, so I guess it should be here in a fem days. It would be great to hear if your friend has tried it on the ken onion. I usually find it easier to maintain my knives with a strop or my cc4, than actually having to sharpen them. If the Edge retention on the k390 is as good as it seems, I probably won’t have to sharpen it too aften with my use. So 13 dps, that’s pretty low, you’re a braver man than me :) like you said, 15~17 dps with a slight convex should be great for my use. I actually found an old knife wich I used as a child at my parents house. It was totally destroyed, chipped and rolled with a lot of rust. I managed to remove most of the rust, and used no more than 10 min on the ken onion. The edge turned out fantastic, so the ken onion can be a great tool. That was a really cool project. So will keep you updated when I get the knife, hopefully the fit and finish will be a little better than the one you got! Stay safe and thank you again. Ron

@@midnightson7253 Hey Ron. I sharpened 3 Stretch 2 in K390. They all had the same grind: A bit steeper on one side than the other. I assume the entire series is like that. Since the 3 knives I sharpened were purchased from different vendors and at different times. 12-13 dps is nothing special. I have an old Buck Vantage which I reprofiled a lot of years ago. About one or 2 months i decided to see how the steel would handle a lower edge angle...like 12 dps...and when I actually looked...it was at 12 dps. I used it as an edc knife, took it outdoors, camping at the seaside...As long as you try to keep your cuts (in hard materials) straight and don't overdo it when twisting in the cut i think you should e ok. Over the past few months I also played with S100V(which many people call "chippy") and no serious damage occurred that I could not trace back to me doing something "questionable" with it. I kept the K390 blade sharp for one entire month while cutting wood (at least 10-15 min/day) every day simply by stropping it. Lower edge angles help when you want to do that. I have many videos where I show and talk about this. Some are free on my patreon page. If they are not free...tell me and I will send you a link.

What stropping compound do you use? I have started using a 50% concentration 2 to 4 micron diamond paste as I carry a Para3 in S45VN, a PM2 in CTS-XHP, and a Delica in K390. Is the diamond based compound a good idea for what are considered a bit harder (even if not hardest) steels?
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
Up until recently I mainly used the BRKT Stropping compound...mainly the White one. I tried the others but found them to cut less "to my liking" than the white one. Recently I started using diamond stropping compounds. Unfortunately, were I like, they can be more difficult to get so I didn't really get to pick exactly what I wanted. So far I have tried DMT's 6 Micron diamond paste and 2 other CBN stropping compounds, 1 micron and .25 micron I use them on leather and balsa....some are better on leather some on balsa. I do think that for some steels diamonds do a better job. but, imo, it has less to do with hardness and more to do with the main elements which form the carbides.. To explain this better maybe...i managed to get the same "hair whittling" edge, on ZDP-189 with both types of stropping compounds. Now... There are steels where using diamond stones and stropping compounds(paste spray) will give you much better results. Much faster also which can leave you with a better/"healthier" edge. I wish I could answer your question better. But my experience with "high end" sharpening materials is limited compared to what I have seen. I have not yet tested S4VN but I can tell you that for CTS-XHP and K390 you can get superb results with the BRKT stropping compounds. I have been sharpening M4 and Cruwear lately and used the diamond/cbn compound and they work really well.. a bit better than the White BRKT. but then again they are finer... I know the "theory" which a lot of people cling to....but from what i have tested i can say: yes diamonds cut faster, but if you don't want to go under 1 micron...the 'classic' stropping coumpound will get you similar results if your technique is good and you don't overdo it.

@@SpartanJohns Try out venev diamond compound. It should be available in Europe. They have a sample pack that is cheap that you can try out to see if it fits your needs. There's like 8 different grits to sample. Also stroppy stuff from UK. I am in the USA and I'm spoiled. I recommend Gunny juice if you can source it. Cuts very fast. Spray wait 5 minutes and go. Lasts forever.

@@BenoJ3000 I have been looking around for Gunny Juice but with no luck. Same with Venev. I recently bought 2 venev stones but I could not find a reliable source for diamond compound. If you have recommendations of online stores which are trustworthy I'd sure appreciate it.

@@SpartanJohns lol, I'm not getting younger myself. Every time I watch one of your videos I wonder what you do to get your arms so pumped, but still remain lean. For me it is a trade off. Every time I get below 10% bfp I loose size. Struggling to get best of both worlds.

I am very far from being lean. About 25 pounds away. I work out every day. Depending on how I feel/how much time I have, anywhere between 30 to 90 minutes. But my goals have changed thru the years. I am just trying to keep some strength, avoid injuries and stay under 200 pounds. That's all. How much you eat it more important than anything else...

@@beertravel HAHA! Friends are important. S45VN is a nice steel too. I have not extensively used it but I did get to sharpen it for friends. If you ever feel like the Para3 does not fit you exactly....look into the "skinny mod". I got an extra pair of g10 scales and modified them with a metal file. So much better in hand than the regular Para3.

@@SpartanJohns I have the cruwear version. I like it a lot. But I'm not sure it's worth the money. Or at least the value for money. Construction is good but there is an issue with the blade hitting the lanyard hole. I have to send it back. Others have the same issue and I don't know what they can do because of the design. It was nearly perfect but if not that issue it would be in my top 5.

I have k390 and cruwear K390 takes a patina much quicker than cruwear. I have yet to see a patina on my cruwear pm2. I have worked with and pushed the limits(in my use) of K390. i think, if you don't mind a carbon steel, that k390 is really nice. Sharpens up nice and ...everything I said in my videos. Wat is so special about cruwear? Well...I have been playing with it for about 4 months now i think... What I like about it most, to put it shortly: after regular edc cutting tasks...i strop it and it comes back to about 99% of its initial sharpness. Very easy!
