They were told to read books because, there was a competition on that episode and so, the whole family had to read to win. However, Lola didn't, so in order to that they lost. But, if they were strict, they would've shouted at Lola. But since they're not strict, they understood that Lola couldn't read.

My mom wouldn't let me eat before bed. It's a perfectly normal rule. Kitchen was always closed at 8 to 9, because that was usually bed time and I even used to do my own Lemonade stands to make money for something I wanted.
