There are more than 5,000 bird strikes worldwide every year. In most cases, it does without significant problems. But sometimes there are serious incidents with a risk to the lives of passengers and crew members. The financial losses of commercial aviation from bird strikes amount to 1 billion 200 million dollars a year.
More than 45% of bird-aircraft collisions are in the engine, the most vulnerable and critical to flight safety.
Small individuals do not pose a danger to modern aircraft engines. But if the mass of the bird is 5-6 kilograms at a speed of 300 km / h. this can easily damage the engine. The kinetic energy of impact is several tons. The main difficulty in protecting the engine is that the protective device should not interfere with the free flow of air, and at the same time become a significant obstacle to birds entering the engine.
As a breathable barrier, strong thin strings made of modern carbon-based materials with a breaking strength of 500 kg / mm2 and more would be suitable. In this case, they will not show noticeable aerodynamic resistance. At the same time, the supporting frame for strings should not cross the air flow entering the engine, and the situation in which any parts of the supporting frame could get into the engine must be completely excluded.
All these requirements are met by the proposed device. It consists of two annular string frame pieces built into the intake housing just ahead of the engine's front turbine blades. To bring into the active state, the movable part of the frame pulls the protective strings from the containers located at intervals along the perimeter of the fixed part of the annular frame with a rotary movement. The stretched strings intersecting with each other form a protective grid. The device is a cross between a tennis racket, a photo-diaphragm and an egg cutter.
In the case of the occurrence of kinetic energy in birds on the grid, the impact will be spent on the destruction of biological tissues and the absorption of frame particles. Some of the fragments remained stuck on the strings, some are found in the engine in a dissolved and slowed down form. This is acceptable and safe. In such cases, the situation of detection of the outer blade of the turbine and surge inside the engine will be excluded.
The device is activated only during the risk of a collision with birds - during takeoff and landing, up to 1500 m. In cruise mode, the protective strings are folded. The air channel of the engine is absolutely free.
The device has small dimensions and weight. It can be entangled in both new and already used models of aircraft engines.
Unfortunately, it cannot be called super economical, due to the use of expensive materials for the manufacture of strong strings. But the cost of the aircraft is much greater, and the lives of passengers and crew are priceless.
