A pair of BAC Strikemasters displaying on the first day of the Duxford Summer Airshow 2022. These Strikemasters are owned and operated by North Wales Military Aviation Services (NWMAS) and are based at Hawarden Airfield.
The BAC 167 Strikemaster was a further development of the Hunting Jet Provost, designed and built in the 1950's by Hunting Percival in Luton. The Jet Provost was primarily a jet powered trainer for the RAF but it was also a successful light attack aircraft which saw success in the Middle-eastern export market.
The Jet Provost T5 production continued alongside the development of the BAC Strikemaster and the first prototype (G-27-8) flew from Warton on 26th October 1967.
The BAC Strikemaster was a weaponised version with an uprated Rolls-Royce Viper turbo-jet engine, a strengthened airframe and wing hard-points and fuel tanks together with a completely new communications and navigational system in the cockpit alongside dual ejector seats.
Initially marketed as a counter-insurgency aircraft, the BAC Strikemaster also maintained its advanced trainer profile although most Middle-eastern users opted for the militarised version. Its rough airfield capability and low-maintenance costs made it a favourite amongst many third world governments.
A total of 146 BAC Strikemaster aircraft were built at Warton between 1967 - 1984 with the 2 major production types and 12 variants seeing service in 10 different countries as late as 2009.
In the UK, the RAF opted to continue with its Jet Provosts until the early 80’s which it subsequently replaced with the British Aerospace Hawk.
Of the two Strikemasters here one, G-RSAF, served with the Royal Air Force of Oman and is one of 12 mark 82A's. It wears RAF Oman colours and serial 417, the other G-SOAF is one of 20 Mark 80A's built for the Royal Saudi Air Force, wears Royal Saudi Air Force colours and is coded 425. A total of 146 Strikemaster aircraft were built between 1967 and 1984.

I visited my dad on Masirah Island in the late 70’s. It had a training Sqn of Strikemaster. I was very lucky enough to fly in a few of the Sultan’s aircraft types. Fond memories of days before health and safety took hold.

I saw these 2 perform at the midland air festival this year and the brown and green one perform a solo at Southport. Great displays. After Shoreham, I like to think this group saved classic jet displays in this country. I hope to see them a lot more next year. Great video

Thank you and I'm glad that you enjoyed the film. I've never them called 'The Blunty' before - a good descriptive nickname. Here they were called 'The Strike', even though they never served with the RAF. It's nice to see them live on in private hands.👍😊

Looks a lot like the Cessna :Dragonfly' bomber from the Vietnam war. Tough & agile aircraft.

Yes, it does look quite similar. The Strikemaster was a development of the BAC Jet Provost which itself was developed in the early 1950's at a similar time to the Cessna T-37 from which the Dragonfly derived. There doesn't appear to have been any recorded liaison between the manufacturers or design teams. Maybe one of those instances where similar design and performance requirements inevitably led to a similar design solution?
