A new law has been passed which aims to curb the impact strikes can have, allowing ministers to impose minimum levels of service.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
It coincides with hospital consultants in England walking out for the first time in ten years.
Their two-day strike has reduced services to Christmas Day levels, and comes hot on the heels of a five-day walkout by junior doctors.

Difficult to sympathise with folks on £100k a year asking for folks on far, far less to stump up cash to fund it! I'm a pensioner (£11k a year before tax) and I too was better off in 2008 - but what has that got to do with it? Hard to disguise that this is a threat: 'give us more money, or your health will suffer', nice attitude (understandable if this was the Mafia, but consultants???) ...

Lets be honest for decades doctors get paid 2-3 times more than average salary be it in Asia, US or Europe. Its been like this for generations. Likely because becoming and staying in practice as a doctor is no joke, a lot of brains and hardwork goes into it. I don't blame them if they want a bit extra. £128k is like £6k net p.m. A lot of doctors make this salary in Asia like dubai, bahrain, Qatar, singapore, even India let alone US ($300-$600k😮). So a highly experienced cardiologist earns much more in poor Asia, which has low cost of living. We can only compare with US because of similar cost of living. Even western europe has lower cost of living than UK. So as a cardiologist with £128k earning I save £1k in UK £4k in India £5k in Dubai (because accomodation, school, medical is generally covered in gulf) In US the earnings will be $20k net p.m Even if I spend $10k I still save $10k this includes medical insurance. So UK is offering very low income. With those savings you can't even change your entrance door. Let alone costly refurbishments.

Go to Germany Sweden Holland etc. and Cuba and you will see a universal health service that treats all people citizens or not ! That is something to be proud of for the people of those countries. The NHS is first aid supported by red and blue Tories and praised to the skies by deluded people like yourself.

they proclaim to be so concerned about the patients and waiting lists - so they just decided to go on a strike. What a logic!

Right, so after 5-6 years in medical school, at least 8-10 of post graduate training, exams and assessments (which Drs pay for), unbelievable responsibility, continuous pay cuts since the tories have been in power, a loss of earnings of at least one third, concerns for patient safety, ongoing funding of the NHS, calling the tories on their lies, deception and misinformation you think the consultants shouldn’t go on strike for better pay and safer working conditions? Right ……

Consultants are humans too - and are just as entitled to strike against their own pay erosion. How can waiting lists be solved if doctors keep leaving the NHS because of the working conditions and pay erosion? Consultants are vital for the NHS workforce, we should be doing everything to keep their knowledge and expertise to keep the NHS running rather than running them down to the ground so they leave.

It's mainly the elderly. So, your idea is to continue to drive a car with the entire dashboard alight instead of taking it to the garage? The car is the NHS, I feel the need to point that out to you.

You're not entitled to other people's labour at a price they're not willing to sell it at. You sound like a spoiled child.

They have to work their arses off to be the best in school, get through a long tough, degree, over a decade of post graduate training with rigorous exams. Why shouldn't we pay them the market rate? Is the privilege of living in the UK worth the £150,000 opportunity cost of not moving abroad where they're fairly renumerated? How much faster do you think the waiting lists will grow when our doctors have moved elsewhere in the anglosphere?
