Beautiful composition! It's a dream to hear a string quartet with only slow movements. I'm looking forward to playing this song with someone. Thanks!!!
I appreciate it a lot! Thank you so much. The piece has already been performed, so I can add a few comments which might prove to be useful. Since this was my first real piece for strings there are some oversights on my part. Second Movement mm. 44: Have the Viola only play the top note of the octave, it could otherwise prove to be uncomfortable. Generally across the second movement you will notice the missing staccato mark on the 1 in the b section. For readability sake you can add a tenuto mark to those notes. Feel free to exaggerate the dynamics in the b section - the mezzo forte should be dramatic. Also beware the flats. F minor isn't the most forgiving key for strings.
@@schlu Wow yes thank you for replying ! We will most definitely take your comments to heart! If possible is there a story which goes along with this quartet? Again thank you!
Actually there kind of is a story being told in the piece itself: The first and second movements introduce distinct thematic and rhythmic motives, while also being in 3/4 and 2/4 respectively. The third movement is where those two movements clash with one another. A conflict begins - a bunch of ideas melt together. Both movements fighting for the foreground of the finale. Their rhythms and time signatures, melodies and themes come and go - often appearing at the same time. Notice for example mm. 17 ff. - the cello plays the main theme of the 1st mvt. while 2nd Violin and Viola acompany it with the march like rhythm of the 2nd mvt. The 1st Violin plays fragments of the 1st movement. Notice how the note values of the main theme of the 1st mvt. didn't adjust to the 4/4 time. This is intentional. The 1st mvt wants to stand for itself and not share the stage with the 2nd one so to speak. This kind of conflict continues for quite a while, slowly but surely they come to an agreement. At the climax of the piece (mm. 120) they have created something new and set their differences aside. Pretty much the entire 3rd movement is built out of the ideas of the first two. That is the story I wanted to tell through the music - a kind of consolation. The absence of conflict brings unity and the act of unity brings beauty. On a different note - if you ever feel the need to adjust something during rehearsal, feel free to do so. It's been almost two years since I wrote this piece with 16, while on island in the baltic sea with only my laptop and no piano. It's by no means a perfect piece by a long shot - but it was what made me aware of orchestra writing and has changed the way I look at music ever since. It will always have a special place in my heart - so thank you for bringing it out there ❤️
It's a very interesting and beautiful thing! I enjoyed. You used here a unusual composition - three slow parts. It remindes me the 15th Quartet of Shostackovich. However your music is absolutely different. Thank you!
Danke sehr!
It has a vibrant memoryof Brahms and Franck, both of melodic and harmonic intensity and tragedy. My only suggestion is to really expand the first movement just for a little bit. Sometimes he's slow introductions need as much time to blend and take time. Otherwise a very heartfelt piece. I can't wait for the second quartet.
I'm delighted to hear that :) Once I find a few minutes of my time, I'll prepare the sheet music to be available for free in the description. Since I had the Sheet prepared for a live performance already, that shouldn't be too difficult. Note that I have made a few changes to the bowing and overall readability, (as well as small note changes like removing the octave in the viola part of the second movement) so the sheet music I will provide you with will be better than the version shown in the video. If your players come across any problems in the bowing and the like, please feel free to play it how it feels most comfortable. Wish you and your Quartet the best!
The link is now in the description. There will probably be a few mistakes here and there, but I hope you can work with this. I'm currently in the midst of finishing school, so I couldn't provide you with the sheet music any faster. But thank you a bunch for considering playing this with your Quartet :) Send them my regards! Good Luck!
Thanks, I totally understand! I didn't know what I was doing at all when I wrote this piece :3 Maybe check out my Cycle of Seasons - it is still to this day the thing I am most proud of to have created.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I think I have actually improved a lot. This String Quartet is a rather old one of mine. Please take a listen of my second one :) the first Movement is already uploaded.
