In this video you’ll learn about the various string techniques that are available on string instruments.
Join my FREE String Orchestration course: soundtrack.academy/string-orc...
You can play all of these string techniques on all four string section instruments, but they will have different tonal qualities to them, depending on which instrument is playing them.
Even if you deal exclusively with sample libraries, and have no intention of ever writing for real instruments, this section is still massively important.
It’s going to help you understand all of the various articulations that come with sample libraries. And the more you understand them, the better you’ll be able to write for them, and the more realistic you’ll be able to make your pieces sound.
It’s going to open up a whole new world of timbres and sounds for you to get your teeth stuck into.
All demonstrations performed by the amazing Xiana Harron: / xianaharronmusic

On a sidenote, as a guitarist I'll tell you we can do portamento: fret the note, pick / finger the string and then slide your frethand up or down. That's guitar portamento, it also has a typical sound and believe me: you've probably heard hundreds of examples of it just by listening to the radio. Especially in the 90s.

No problem! I don't tend to do many tech walkthroughs, as there are so many other channels doing that on RU-vid. I'll add it to my list of ideas though!

Great video! :) I would like you'll add in the future another articulation: spiccato, pizzicato, flautando, con sordino, col legno and tremolo ;) But - thanks anyway! :) EDIT: Yes! I found the movie about bowing :) You're great! :D

Glad you found them! They're also all grouped together on my website, in case that's easier: soundtrack.academy/string-instruments (Apologies for the slow reply)

I'm trying to identify the name of the technique used in the intro for Cold Shoulder by Adele. I believe a colleague told me you can slightly bounce the bow in the string but I'm not sure if that's how you do it.
@soundtrackacad
@soundtrackacad 4 года назад
Sounds like tremolo to me! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4E8rMLHIpag.html There are techniques where you can bounce the bow on the string too, but you usually get more detachment between the notes when you do that :)

Really nice video; it's missing a few big ones though: pizzicato, trills, tremolo, spiccato, ostinato, to name a few that you can find in most respectable string libraries. You hear a lot of those in today's music as well. Edit: never mind, I found this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U9MuTlwEF8U.html nice work!

Hi! I have a couple of other videos covering the vast majority of string techniques: 1. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U9MuTlwEF8U.html 2. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2mhm7yPvcSY.html And then pretty much all of the common techniques are collated and explained on my website: soundtrack.academy/string-instruments Hope that's helpful!
