In the framework of the largest string theory conference in the world, Strings 2019, Science and Cocktails organized a special event at Flagey in Brussels. We were sipping cocktails in the art-deco building with string theorist and science superstar Robbert Dijkgraaf as he told us all about the fundamental laws of Nature. Afterwards, cellist and composer Benjamin Glorieux performed a musical piece together with invited guests especially commissioned for the occasion, while live-video artist Klaas Verpoest accompanied them with his visual magic.
What is string theory? What happens to stuff that falls inside a black hole? What are the fundamental building blocks of space and time? Did Nature have any choice in picking the fundamental laws of physics? What is the role of mathematics in physics?
This talk by professor Robbert Dijkgraaf was recorded on 13 July 2019 at Flagey in Brussels. For more science lectures with dry ice cocktails and live music, visit:

Just when I was thinking I have seen too many of these videos that explain the history of cosmology, this one puts its all together in an absolutely ingenious and comprehensible way. I found myself screenshotting his gorgeous graphics that put so many of the concepts into immediately graspable form. But then I see he's an artist as well as a scientist, and understands the basics of music as well. I think that's really what it takes to be able to put this stuff together. Fabulous presentations, Dr Dijkgraaf!

@@amadalomusasia6317 It is not just eloquence. They need a new kind of religion, where less they understand more they praise it. I call it 'parrot syndrome'. I remember well the very same dynamics of praising talking the unintelligible talk dressed as deep philosophy. On those listed by you I would say few people are able to understand it - that it was good news for me when I read that more than 85 % (?) of physicists didn't care much about speculative physics. Spacetime - I watched the video till he presented the two balls dynamics under spacetime optics. My question is : what we do gain by seeing it through spacetime lens? We always have to revert to single 'photograms' when we are studying the dynamics of the phenomena. So, what would be the gain? To give credits to an abstruse concept / model? Is it more simple to see it through the lens of spacetime (respect to space & time)? If it is not it means all this is against Occam's razor logic (that also implies choosing least complicated model). To me it seems analogous to going back from heliocentric to geocentric model.

Junior, perhaps you can help answer some questions... This "Red Shift is a bit confusing, as we are measuring the past yes? And the degree of past is, of course, variable to the distance, so we are measuring where things WERE thousands, millions, and billions of years ago. So how do we know we are not measuring how fast space WAS expanding, thousands, millions, and billions of years ago? Is it possible that space (whatever that is, and I will try to understand "virtual" particles") WAS expanding ever faster, the further back in time we perceive? If this is true, then possibly the further away one looked, the greater the red shift would be, for THAT light which left that star however long ago. ( It possibly WAS red shifted via more rapid expansion THEN, and has encountered ever slower expansion over an ever longer journey) The correlation between time and distance could create a FALSE idea that expansion is currently accelerating, when in fact it may be slowing down or staying the same now. A steady slowing of the expansion rate over time, may create a steady appearance of accelerating expansion over distance, and do we assume steady expansion over all space, and all time. (Why would "space" expand the same everywhere all the time.) After all, if the impossible happened, and a galaxy 10 billion light years away instantly reversed its motion towards us, it appears we would not know that happened for about 10 billion years. In the Doppler effect, a race car moving away transmits a deeper sound. If the race car is 3 seconds away, and instantly reversed towards us ( ignore the the physics of that instant reversal) we would not hear the higher sound until AFTER the Doppler affected lower sound passed our ears, three seconds later. For three seconds we would think the car was still moving away. I am uncertain why light is said not to have a Doppler affect. Also what is the error margin of this measurement? For Instance, what space gases between our perception exist over millions to billions of light years, and how does this phase shift light perception? I understand the JWST telescope is finding immense gas fields we were previously not as aware of. I understand we do not see the expected blurring, yet those gases do exist? And when we map these vast thousands, millions and billions of light years distant galaxies, in order to know where they are NOW we would also need to know what there motion was over the past thousands, millions and billions of years, as well as know how said space was expanding during that variable time, and this would completely change the map. A current map appears most challenging. In ten billion years a galaxy, a galaxy cluster and a super cluster, and variable space expansion, can move stuff a long way. Can we even map the current physical location of our own galaxy, and does gravity propagate at light speed?

This was a great lecture! With a tribute to Hawking. I am not a a scientist but I do recognize some of the theory's mentioned here. As a child of 10, I was walking on the pavement of a street, to school. I did wonder then, if I cross the street now, and go walk on the other side of the street, will it have concequences later in my life? So, imagination is really a part of science. Without it, we go nowhere.

The essential of this presentation is in the first and last minute where he talks about string theory, as the title pointed out! At least I now "understand" what Hawkins radiation is! This is a concise presentation of the birth and end of the universes. A lot of questions I had are now enlightened. But it is a bit overexcited to call it the best presentation ever. My best presentation was the one where the Maxwell theory and Einsteins formulas were put together to show what the speed of light is! That was MY best presentation, I could follow it from beginning to end, but a lot of techniques during that explanation were completely unknown to my only plausible. It remembered me to the times I was at college in math classes where I tried to learn tricks to solve formulas.

This hypothesis is WRONG! 🔷 The Conglomerate of Universes - Universe Creation Theory 🔷 combining GOD/Nature, ancient religions, astronomy, cosmology, fined-tuned laws of physics/general relativity/quantum mechanics, chaos theory/fractals, laws of biology & chemistry, linguistics/code-breaking, programming the Universe/GOD=7_4 or FOD=6_4 theory, intelligent design, mysticism, and philosophy/anthropic principle "Energy can’t be created or destroyed, only transformed/transferred in an isolated system." This duality combines general relativity’s singularities of infinite density breaking through spacetime in ‘Cosmic Egg hatchings’ of all created universes within ‘The Conglomerate’: multiverse with no random quantum fluctuation bubble universes, no parallel worlds, and all universes have similar physical laws. Our Universe is 1-in-2 trillion ‘self-similar offspring’ each with alike inherited traits/‘DNA’. “In the beginning”, the Planck density of the core of a SBH is a birth canal. ‘Quantum bounce SBH-SWH seed transitions’ are ‘quantum tunneling umbilical wormholes’ with energy-matter and data transformed/transferred, albeit scrambled and encoded. But by speaking about Planck Scale where you started believing that it were the stages where the contents for the BigBang was getting cooked to give birth to this Universe is flatly wrong Sir. To determine the age of Universe, BigBang is not the answer(1). On the other side, theory of Expanding Universe is also a mere idea(2) as if, you compare this idea with what I am encountered with. Deeper you go to find Planck Scale will never be fruitful until you start travelling opposite side of the aisle. Take your all knowledge and experience in this "opposite side" to find the answer. I will hint toward what Sri Aurobindo said and one particular work on its extension to get published soon. I personally have a very strong riposte to the theories on Universe which insanely putting mankind to swim in bowl of water which is floating in ocean to sink anytime.
