This Smith manure spreader has function, but it does it with Fashion too! Bold black and yellow stripes helps this manure spreader stand out from the crowd. Although it seems unnecessary, this is pretty original to these spreaders, so that's what I'll put back on it. Thanks for coming along.
Spring for mugs, tee-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.

Dave I am 73 years old and have only a few heroes and you are one of them. Not for any single thing you do, but ALL of the things you do. Like that LONG horse ride you took, and the way you study the Bible, your character and demeanor. You are just a wonderful man that quietly represents his Creator. God bless you David Engels you are a true inspiration to all of us. Art, Melissa & Joshua from Ohio

Well Dave not only are you a master wheelwright and wagon maker but an artist as well. Amazing, love these videos! I met the guy who airbrushed/painted all of Karl Malone’s tractor trailer rigs when he was dabbling in trucking for a while. The artistry is inspiring. I never had the ‘art’ gene!

Dave, your breadth and depth of skills are always fascinating to watch. What struck me the most in this video is that they would put this level of decoration on something as mundane as a manure spreader. I have found a similar theme in many of the older woodwrking tools I've collected and use. The past generations thought a lot about the things in their lives and the tools they used to make them. We live in a sadly different world today.

Never thought I'd see the day but here it is. There's the farmer looking at his manure spreader while scratching his head in wonder. His wife asks him what's the matter and he says, " Honey I don't believe it. They've gone & pimped my ride!" Sorry, couldn't resist. That is an incredibly job from start to finish. Thank-you for bringing us along.

A couple of years ago I sold our old JD spreader. Ya know you get in a clean up things mode and it always comes back to haunt you. Would be a good project now. As long as you had a manure spreader around you had a place to get rid of your used motor oil. Wasn’t very “green” but it would keep the floor from rotten out. (and nothing growing under it) Love the restoration.

I really miss the days where I used to hand letter signs with a good ole striping brush and some One Shot. Nowadays, people want their signs yesterday and it's just not cost effective anymore. Don't get me wrong, I do really love vinyl it's alot of fun and I still love to make signs after 35+ years. But I miss the old days when I could sit down and just paint for hours and get in a zone just really enjoying myself. Beautiful job Dave

I forget sometimes that Mr. Engels is a really good sign painter. Natural talent most don't have. Holding that clean line is not as easy as he makes it look! Need good eyes (or glasses) and most important, a steady hand. This job came out lovely. Really makes the wagon pop. That little attention to details adds a lot. On a long day of manuer slinging, nice to know my rig looks totally awesome. Kinda surprised they painted them such bright colors, considering the job they're made for. haha!

I have certainly enjoyed watching your videos. You are a terrific craftsman with multiple skills. I am a retired sign man and have done a lot of pinstriping in the last 50 years and you impressed me. I hope there is someone who will be willing to learn the skills you have. There are so many of the "old skills" that will be lost forever unless some young guy makes the effort to learn them. I appreciate and admire all your many skills. Bless you!

Hi Roger, It's not just the signwriting is it ? It's all the other things that he can do as well. Then, when you take into account all the time that it has taken to get that Manure Spreader to this stage, it must be costing someone an awful lot of money. You need them too.

Calling you a craftsman doesn't do you justice my friend, you are a master of your work that's for sure. I think this work is an incredible restoration and most beautiful completely worthy of praise, And extraordinary. By that I mean I find it historically extraordinary that a manure spreader would have had this kind of detail for what it actually does (and generally gets covered with). Farmers had pride back then as well. Most amazing after growing up on a dairy farm in the 1950's.

Looks great, Dave. That is one of the things I love about blue collar vehicles: they are a great vehicle for the builder's creativity, unlike so many of the formal pieces that had to be black, dark blue, dark green, or lake. I know I mentioned Harry Dehart's wagon a few weeks ago. I wish I knew what happened to that. I'd love to lay eyes on it again. Not only did it have the most clever cut under I'd ever seen, but the painting and striping on it was absolutely beautiful. With a working vehicle, you wanted it to stand out in the crowd and be eye catching. It was your best advertising: a mobile billboard.

This is such a work of art. The old one we used on the ranch didn't have a lick of paint and was weathered gray. We only ever used it to spread horse manure from the barns and paddocks. The cow barn was huge and open so their manure we moved out with a D-9 CAT. You would have laughed to see my skinny 14 year old sister running that CAT. She was really good at it too.
