In the first installment of our 14-week Striper Migration Report videos, Assistant Editor, Matt Haeffner, is joined by guests from the Chesapeake Bay and Southern New Jersey to discuss the early stages of the spring migration.
Matt talks with OTW Columnist and weekly fishing report contributor, Alex Perez, of Anglers Sport Center in Annapolis, MD, and Captain Brett Taylor, OTW Contributing Writer and owner of Reel Reaction Sportfishing out of Waretown, NJ.
Perez and Taylor cover pre- and post-spawn striper patterns in the Chesapeake, the importance of bunker during the spring run, and techniques used to target those first migratory fish of the year. Watch the full video above!

Great report. Ive always considered these reports as a flashback from the previous week so Itd be wise to plan your fishing on where theyll move going into the new week.

Caught a 38" and 42" in the Elizabeth River Norfolk Va. I know not the typical spot for folks, but was cool to catch them while fishing for trout and Reds.

I do like to catch and release fish. As well as eat one too. But I totally agree that we shouldn’t be fishing for them when spawning. I think is totally wrong and should not be taken lightly. To me it like dear season. Waiting till the cold hits in the fall for the rut to start and then shoot the bucks in mating season. That to me lessens the number to be born. That doesn’t make sense to me. Should wait till the tutor is over and then hunt the bucks when the testosterone level goes back down and they don’t stink. Went fish for trout in the fall for the same reason kinda. Let them spawn in the fall. We fish them in the springtime because they spawn in the fall.

So much bunker stacking up in our bays in NY. They just started running up the hudson. Hopefully the whales stay away.

Only a matter of time (less than 10 years) before we have a Snook and Redfish fishery all the way up through Montauk. No such thing as climate change? Ask a fisherman... Ask an honest fisherman .

You must be from the northeast.. yes, the climate HAS ALWAYS changed..

@@asphaltcowboy7567 Yes, but when I talk to the old timers who have been fishing the terrible, woke, overeducated Northeast for 50 years (and these are not registered Democrats I assure you) they have only been catching species of fish (Reds, Cobia, resurgent Sheepshead and Weakfish/Specks) that have no business being north of Virginia Beach for the past five years or so. A lot of my co-workers who plow snow in the winter and have taken a big pay cut for the past 3 almost snowless years are also becoming believers in science.

Didn't the earth have an ice age? What happened to all the ice? It melted long before there was a car, plane, boat or the amount of people. The earth naturally has and will continue to heat up..very slowly but over time thats what happens to all planets. I'm sure we contribute but the ice has been melting for centuries before us and will continue no matter what we do. Its truely simple science but we have bull like 22 politicians flying 20 personnel jets the their annual meeting in Switzerland. The science has to be used all the time not just when it suits their agenda which is what our government does. Covid and the vaccines are a perfect example.

@@andynonymous2164suddenly the weathermen/women have forgotten about the two different types of weather patterns..Remember El Nino and La Nina we heard about growing up..the one that changes temperatures and amounts of snow we get.. Well that what it does up in the northeast.. Cowboy its only 50% of us New Englanders that have fallen for this bologna they're feeding the citizens of the U.S.A. I won't even get into why I'm refusing to say people of America, or how they've programmed the people not to refer to us as the U.S.A...now we're America.. before anyone says it..I know we live in North America, so does everyone in the Mexico & Canada..If you don't understand its already way ova your head
@johnsimeone6209

@@asphaltcowboy7567exactly!! Why doesn't anyone else see this.. or as we're told...follow the science! Well what happened to the Ice Age? The ice slowly melted, why? Because the earth has been heating for centuries. Our leaders only use the science when it suits their agendas. If anything or anyone is to blame its our government, they've been messing around with the weather since before & during the Vietnam War.

@@rmf9567 What’s nonsense, that stripers are in danger? You just categorically say it’s nonsense, based on what? All the signs are there. The main one being young of the year surveys. If they don’t breed they disappear. That’s not so hard to understand. Everybody has their own agenda and siloed set of beliefs, but the numbers are simple, and unless you can identify some other source for their future population, the most logical prediction is that numbers will crash soon. Do you know of another source of population input for stripers to replace the Chesapeake nursery? Even Hudson plummeted last year. We’ll see how it does this year. Maybe cold wet spring will help but remains to be seen. Why on earth would someone just pontificate that something is nonsense when there’s much evidence to the contrary. If you want to take as evidence of the health of the fishery all the great fall fishing in Jersey, or spring in Raritan, that’s LARGE fish. They will disappear and NOT be replaced. Got any other data?
