I hope you enjoyed the video! I'm planning on making a full series of videos if these videos are helpful for people!
I mistakenly labeled diethyl sulfide as propanethiol.

I read organic chemistry because I find it soothing. Humans can let you down, but you know where you are with a ketone.

Ah! yes, the ketones! For me, hormones still do the trick; they too, occasionally come sweetly scented, and, if you are lucky, apply sound laboratory techniques, hear one.

(TL;DR: Thank you.) I graduated with my B.S. in Electrical Engineering a bit over a year ago. I've since started my career in Embedded FW and Telecoms (think satellite-enabled remote sensors). However, it took me a long time to get the degree - I spent 7 years getting it. I was a horrible student for the first 5 ...unfortunately that is when I took our required Chemistry course. The only thing I remember is electronegativity... I just want to let you know how important your teaching is: I've recently watched some of your non-lecture videos like the acid tier list - totally lost but filled me with wonder and curiosity. Now, I intend to watch all of your lecture videos in order while following a textbook. Now that I have time to study on my own, I really want a solid Org. Chem. understanding. (I've picked up a good amount from learning about pharmacology for my whole life. In a different world, I'd have studied psychopharmacology). I hope to pivot to engineering medical devices later on. Thank you so much for making these videos.

Awesome content, this helped answer a few questions i had regarding chemistry, yes, so thank you! years ago curiousity led me to spend a whole ten cents at a thrift store which i bought a organic chemistry textbook from 1953!it was simple enough to aid in understanding organic chemistry, then i bought a textbook that was published recently, and jesus! what a difference-the confusion was justified with how much more information was included. (both introductory first year books).so far i am into it some 4.10$.and so it goes.

I got REALLY excited about chemistry late last fall when I hear Explosions&Fire on Hamilton Morris’ podcast. I looked around for some thoroughly educational content online but couldn’t find any. As soon as RU-vid recommended me your video on forbidden smells, and it sounded like it was part of a whole fucking series about organic chemistry I subscribed immediately. I’m so excited to work these videos into my daily routine and start learning about organic chemistry because the little bit I know absolutely fascinates me. THANK YOU! ❤️

Yeah, for some reason at college we were only taught about alkanes, haloalkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, esters, amines, amides, phenyl compounds, diazo compounds, organic nitrates, and diazonium chloride compounds. We never learned about alkynes, ethers, cycloalkenes, heterocycles aliphatic or aromatic, thiols, thioesters, dithioesters, imines, imides, oximes, nitriles, isonitriles, cyanates, isocyanates, azides, diazides, nitrosomines, organic peroxides, organic nitrites, organic nitrosyls, organic phosphorous, boron, selenium or arsenic compounds or whatever C-N=O is, or C-N=N-C, C-N=N-O-C, C-N=N-OH, C=N-N=C, C-NH-N=C, C-NH-NH-C, C-NC-NC2 or C-NC-NH-C is... But if it's C-O-SO2-OH instead of C-SO2-OH, that's an organic sulphate instead of a sulphonic acid, so H3C-SO2-OH would be methyl sulphonic acid, but H3C-O-SO2-OH would be methyl sulphate, and H3C-O-SO2-O-CH3 would be dimethyl sulphate. And C-O-SO-OH would be organic sulphite, right? Like, H3C-SO-OH would be methyl sulphinic acid, but H3C-O-SO-OH would be methyl sulphite, and H3C-O-SO-O-CH3 would be dimethyl sulphite, right? Also, 3HC-SO2-O-CH3 would be methyl methylsulphonate and 3HC-SO-O-CH3 would be methyl methylsulphinate.

dude.. this was absolutely terrific ^__^ I've been wondering how to best understand the structures or geometrical makeup in chemistry (visually and also, adjusting the prefixes/suffixes for the compounds at hand)..the course I picked up [for fun-siezC:] was..well, let me not attribute the following to the course itself.. my learning was significantly disjointed due to my starting the semester a wk /two wks late..&basically, I found that in order for me to truly comprehend whatever concept we had for the week, I had to actually zero-in and focus [sHoCkEr, I know :p]. not to mention that so much of introductory chem concepts/objectives tend to lend way to one another [prob a constant throughout chem, but I wouldn't know yet :p]. I'd skip around the chapters in an effort to make it in time for the upcoming quiz/exam but that didn't quite work out for me the way I had hoped, haha. >__< I'd drop the little bit of progress I'd made in order to cram the current ish the class was on, and at the end of it all, I'd be left with two incomplete concepts just kinda chillin in my brain. :/ Fortunately, I've saved most of the material and I have my txtbook..the plan is to make my way thru the material as was intended and take the course again just to test my own merit.. -but it's been a semester! &I'd just like a 'change of scenery', more or less.. then enters your vid! This has already done so much for me, like, in seeing how things actually apply or look like.. I've found that instead of broad concepts, I need an actual valid profile to get traits n shit to stick. Your tier-list vids are perfect examples of such! *"Which Solvent is the Best?"* is paaacked with such great information! (I think that may have been my introduction to you?) Anyway, I'm super stoked to make my way through the playlist ^__^ &sorry for such an extended comment. I just felt that perhaps adding some context regarding the up's n' down's of this recent semester might help to convey the ~ extent ~ of my gratitude and relief for finding such a well put-together source of material. If there's one thing I've definitely become more aware of, it's just how much of a skill teaching really is. ^__^ also {last bit!}, not sure where you currently stand on the twitch thing , but would totally be up for catching you on stream ^__^ I think there's definitely some potential there even if only a few ppl come around. For now, I'll peep discord tho. :) Thanks again for your contribution! I sincerely do appreciate it. Your effort's don't go unnoticed. :)) -EC

In tetraerthylamonium, why is it positively charged? The carbon attaches to the lone pair somehow, but when does the nitrogen lose an electron.
@That_Chemist
@That_Chemist 2 года назад
Since the nitrogen had two electrons in the lone pair, and it used those to form a new bond, it only gets one of the electrons from the bond, so that gives it a net positive charge

At some point when you are teaching basics, please talk about the confusing concept of "electro-negativity". As used by chemists, an "electro-negative" group is one that attracts electrons. Why would a negative group attract a negative particle? And they say "electronegative groups have a large electron affinity". Again implying that negatives attract each other.
@That_Chemist

chemistry is a war fought over electrons
@amedeeabreo7334

@@goos6005 Exactly. So as you say, " lack of electrons"...or in other words "Positive charge"!! I think if one reads the history of chemistry and you go back to early 1800s you can trace the origins of this lingo. Yet it remains today as a confusing impediment to chemistry students.
@amedeeabreo7334
