First aired on 15th February 1988, this Horizon documentary looks at the growth of the UK's Air Traffic Control network, and the problems that this created in terms of airspace congestion and the increased likelihood of air-misses. The program discusses the limited aerial capacity of UK airspace, the limits of the technology of the time (the ageing IBM 9020) and the introduction of new technologies such as Flow Control and Conflict Alert - systems that are still in use today. The program also looks at some of the safety related problems faced shortly after the opening of London City Airport.
The video and audio have both been re-mastered, and I hope that you enjoy watching this re-uploaded documentary. This recording was originally uploaded by Sean Johnston, and I have edited it to make it easier to watch.
