The Hidden Dangers of Washington's Dispersed Camping

We find out the hard way about the hidden dangers of Washington's dispersed camping. Our first camp site was nice but we had several intruders over the course of the entire night. Pulling in and out of our camp, blaring music. It was like they wanted us to know we were not welcome. The second camp site we found was the opposite. It was walking distance to a hiking trail with a waterfall! Although it took us hours of driving through the national forest to find it. This is the only state we have ever felt uncomfortable dispersed camping in the national forest.

Listening to your gut is an extremely important safety precaution. I love the Olympic Peninsula. I traveled around it for almost a month and camped in some phenomenal spots. One really enjoyable activity I enjoyed was the ferry ride from Bremerton to Seattle.

Do yourself a favor and, if you can, visit the NorthWest when students are in school in California. The crowds will be about 1/4 what they are now. Visit after September 1 and crowds will be 1/16 what they are. But some of the campgrounds close for the winter. But not all - mostly the inland ones that are at higher altitude like around Bend.

What a beautiful forest this was in today’s video! Thank you for sharing, @Dome Life. I notice Kelly sticks a lighter deep inside to light the flame each time she uses the oven. I was doing the same thing, until someone showed me that the striker knob that lights the stove burners also lights the oven flame. But there’s a trick to it. You have to turn and hold the oven temp knob at the point a little dot or flame symbol is located. Then push the temp knob in and hold it. While holding and pushing the oven temp knob in, turn the striker knob until the oven flame lights. This takes practice, but it’s much safer than sticking your head down and arm into the oven to light the gas all the way at the back of the oven. I hope this helps.

try going up Hoko road to check out lake ozette it's way off the beaten path and has extra feature of having the chicken ranch which is suppose to be one of the most haunted places ever in the 70's I spent many a night there as I just lived right down the road it was just a good place to drink some beer that we looted from the old man's supply. I never seen anything but what do I know. It is featured in a whole bunch of books on that subject,

Remember, free camping on Forest service Road 1122 up Baker Lake Road off of Highway 20 in Skagit Valley Washington, just off I-5. There is really good sockeye fishing in this lake right now And if you go to the Kulshan Dam and go to the boat launch you will see the sockeye, salmon, jumping nearby, and you can’t miss it! Good luck on your journey, and I will Try to help you with free campsites when you get up to the north west part of the state around LaConner, Washington where I live. I am familiar with the most of the free camping in this area. All the places I list will be in this area and we have the most beautiful Pass in the Cascade’s! You will not regret coming here with our temperatures! And no smoke as of yet. 75 for a high every day and 52 every night and La Conner anyway and just about as goo up the Skagit River. If you want to head east, after that, stay on Highway 20 and go over the pass to Winthrop Washington absolutely beautiful right now and the nectarines and peaches are ripe! Also forgot to tell you there are lots of huckleberries near Baker lake and lobster mushrooms. Ha ha.

I’m starting a project this spring of opening my little acreage into a family-friendly educational walking trail here in the Ozarks of Missouri. The first phase is creating the campsite for volunteers to sleep/eat/reset before fulfilling their 5 hour workday and then heading off for some kayaking and exploration of the area. I am so excited and definitely will be watching again to learn what makes bad-good-excellent camping for folks. Be safe!!❤

@@CodyandKellie not surprising really ... a lot of the "wilderness" areas in the PNW are not far from cities really ... so there are a lot of "druggies" who don't mind driving a little to get what they consider "easy pickin's," hikers who left good stuff they can steal and sell in the cars at trail heads.

You guys were smart to leave the area upon coming across some questionable characters. Around the Washington National Forests, it can be hit and miss. Most of the time, you're fine, but sometimes you run into people with shotguns "defending" "their" site like I did once. Fortunately, these are isolated incidents, but when in doubt, it's best to move on. It will always be there another time.

US 101 north of Quilcene to close for 22 days July 24, 2023 We're in the midst of a culvert replacement project at Leland Creek and two of its tributaries. Starting next week, we'll have a section of US 101 closed while we replace two of the culverts with larger fish-passable structures. From July 31 to Aug. 21, US 101 will be closed between Lords Lake Loop Road and Leland Cut Off Road. The culverts will be replaced one at a time to allow access for local traffic. Non-commercial traffic will detour onto Center Road. Commercial traffic will use State Route 3 in Shelton and the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge.
